Red Hat :: Yum Update On CentOS 5.3 Upgraded My System To CentOS 5.4

Oct 29, 2009

I just ran a "yum update" on my CentOS 5.3 system. After a reboot, I noticed /etc/redhat-release show CentOS 5.4.

I thought yum upgrade was supposed to do that?

I wanted to simply patch my CentOS 5.3 system without turning it into CentOS 5.4 ... YET.

CentOS 5 :: CentOS Auto Update Kernel And Reboot System?

Mar 17, 2010

I am an old days RH release user(from 6.x) and just switching back from Debian/Ubuntu to CentOS on some servers, but I can not understand the kernel update strategy currently enabled in CentOS.There are two boxes, with almost identical installation, but recently there was an auto update of kernel on one box. This auto update also seems to issue an auto reboot on the machine, which is unacceptable on server machines.

CentOS 5 :: 5.3>5.4 Update Gave New CentOS-Base.repo.rpmnew?

Oct 22, 2009

Just checking to be sure. 5.3>5.4 update went without a hitch:) But a message ran about (/etc/yum.repo.d) CentOS-Base.repo.rpmnew. Comparing CentOS-Base.repo with the new one show the 1st has the correct priorities and .rpmnew does not have the correct priorities. Should I remove the *.rpmnew repo after making sure it otherwise is the same as the original CentOS-Base.repo?

CentOS 5 :: Kudos To The CentOS Team On 5.4 Update Ease?

Oct 24, 2009

After some testing for a couple of days, I decided to take the plunge and update all my 5.3 machines. Using the recipe from the release notes:

yum clean all
yum update glibc*
yum update yum* rpm* python*
yum clean all
yum update
shutdown -r now

I updated some guinea pigs that I had physical access to and didn't have any issues. So I remotely updated a small farm of LAMP machines that handle a couple of million page views per day. It took each machine approximately 5-6 minutes to download/install/reboot.

After i have upgraded to windows 7, the dualboot is apparently gone, I am no longer able to boot in linux.

My question is now, how can i fix this, or create a new dual boot?

Im currently left with two partitions, one with Windows 7 installed, and one with CentOs 5.6 installed, but as said, I am unable to acces my linux.

CentOS 5 :: Single Disk Kickstart: How To Use Upgraded Kernel

Aug 19, 2010

For portability reasons; I am building a standalone kickstart ISO; based of Cent5.2. I am to the point where I can load my ks file (linux ks=cdrom:/ks.cfg), it reads it fine; and performs the install as I want.

Where I am having a problem; is a good way to have the install use upgraded RPM's, not the base; specifically a kernel with a few needed tweaks in it; which is packaged in an rpm.

I attempted to place my kernel rpm's into the CentOS directory and rerun creatrepo; but I simply managed to corrupt the base repo on the install media.

CentOS 5 :: Running A CentOS 5.5 System Which Does NOT Support VT Technology

Jun 3, 2010

I am running a CentOS 5.5 system which does NOT support VT Technology, so I am unable to use Xen HV. I am very happy with OpenVZ other than the fact that it doesn't support Windows, only Linux.I'd like to have VMWare Server 2.x installed, but it appears that OpenVZ changes the Kernel to, in my case, 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.028stab069.6. The default kernel on my system is 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.i386.If I change grub to load 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.i386, VMWare will work but OpenVZ will not. If I change grub to load 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.028stab069.6, OpenVZ will work, but VMWare will not.If I try to run /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl while in the 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.028stab069.6 kernel, I get an error of:

None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)?Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?[/usr/ src/ linux/ include]I'm so lost as what to do now..is there anyway I can compile both of the kernels together somehow?

Ubuntu :: Update System With "apt-get" Afterwards "0 To Install 0 To Update 3 Not Upgraded"

Mar 17, 2010

i don't know where to start exactly First i am kinda newbie in Ubuntu. I am working 7 months with Ubuntu and still i have many difficulties. I went through many problems and still i succeed to fix them all What have i done ? Well simply i have tried to update my system with "apt-get". Afterwards i saw a message "0 to install 0 to update 3 not upgraded". These 3 were linux-generic linux-headers-generic and one more. I have done this ... and suddenly i have chanched my kernel to the last version. After rebooting my machine the worst happened - i had no GUI, no graphics at all.

What the real problem is ? The problem is that i am student in IT engineering, where we work only and with Windows OS and ( isn't that funny?) and Windows Servers. However i preffered to use Linux because of the growing popularity of open source OS, because with linux i have more opportunities to learn new stuff and of course because i hate Windows the most . My problem is that i have 4 Virtual Machines in VirtualBox inside my computer.I still can see the files and i still can operate to some level. I have minimal graphicl interface in "xterm" mode. Yes but i can't operate with them in "xterm" mode and that is so crucial for me. I have projects to make and i am depending of my virtualization. I don't want neither to change my beloved Ubuntu (if is still Ubuntu) and i can't risk to lose any data inside my computer. I will describe the steps i took in the next chapter of the thread
