Applications :: Finding A Good Instant Messaging Client
Aug 24, 2009
I'm a Linux newbie and for my new job I have to do a lot of instant messaging to clients. They are on a variety of services, aim, icq, msn, myspace, facebook, yahoo, Google Talk, jabber, and .mac/ichat
Is there a good instant messaging client that covers most of these on one application? I am using Mandriva with KDE 4.2.
Is there a program already set up to do this? Probably similar to WASTE (URL...), though waste's client is currently unsupported on the newest version of ubuntu (make error having to do with char* or something). Preferably windows and linux supported. Another thing that could be of use would be a local ssh chat. For example someone connects to my box either as me or as another user and runs 'hiben' and a window (or i ran a command or something and have a window open for it) pops up that we can chat in. Something other than single line messages.
I have been assigned a task to implement a free open source content filter having feature of web, email, instant messaging etc. If any one has the information or worked on this type of product please share it.
I booted up my laptop as usual and found that when I opened Empathy IM Client it would not allow me to login when I changed the status to Online (or equivalent). Normally as soon as I open the client the Messaging Status can be changed in the top right next to the clock so I tried to remove it but unfortunately it took the shut down panel with it.
To try and bring them back I used the restore panel commands in terminal:
how you install Oracle Instant Client on Kubuntu.I have Oracle XE and Lazarus installed on a KB machine, but Lazarus can't connect because it's missing the file "libociei.so".I found that file in the Oracle Instant Client which I downloaded and unzipped from Oracle.com. However, I have no idea how to install it. Normally you issue a "sudo" command of some sort. I can't just copy the files because I don't have privileges to copy to the system folders, and don't know where to copy them to anyway. The only online help I've found is for installing PHP with it, which I'm not interested in.
I have my laptop that is a full time Linux box. (My desktop system which is for gaming is still a windows box). I have been using Ubuntu for about a year now, and while it is a wonderful system, I am getting restless to try something new. The one thing I dislike about Ubuntu is that I really don't like Gnome (personal preference, I can see why some like it). So I was wondering what would be a good Distribution(s) that I can download and play with so see what KDE has done in the last year and perhaps play with Xfce. I have run SUSE and Ubuntu in the past.
i am in the videos business and have been for a while[url] and i need a good screen recorder for the task. fraps worked fine in windows, now i need something similar. i should also mention that i have tried using recordmyscreen and it just fails to render, sticking at 0%.
Anyone know a good screen recorder than can record OpenGL games with little or no lag? All the ones I've come across are old and won't compile on newer versions of Ubuntu.
Need a good robust configurable DC++ client., because I am getting slow connections with the latest stable and PPA version of Linuxdc++. Yes it may be a unknown config problem, but even with UFW disabled and using "passive" mode, DL's are consistently falling to 500 B/s. Source report that there is no problem at that end.
I have been scouring the internet looking for a good solution to reading .pdb eBooks on Linux. It seems that there isn't one.Could you perhaps recommend a good app to either convert the file easily into something readable or (more preferably) an app that can read them?
I was wanting to know what's a good programming suite that is comparable to MS Visual C++. I'm also curious about the portability of something I make in Linux, can I make a program in Linux and import it over to Windows, and what would be involved in making it compatible?
I've got Fedora core 12 - I'm ex windows user.I have these 3 websites to maintain. These are in finnish language. So called pikalaina sites: Now I would like to add some database driven functionality to these sites.I don't wanna use command line - too dangerous for type errors.MySQL own programs is not very good.In windows I used to use MysqlYog, it was nice.Is there a good graphical MySQL client available for Fedora core 12 ?
I have been using u torrent in windows and I am not able to find a similar torrent client in ubuntu 10.10, I was using transmission bittorrent client, but it is not able to look for peers and seeds as utorrent does and even the download speed is very slow when compared to utorrent. Which is the best torrent client as powerful as utorrent?
I am looking for a good alternative to Skype. I would like to have video and voice calls with a family member who uses MS XP but would like to avoid Skype if possible. Does anyone know of a good client with good video and voice quality that will work on both platforms. I'd like it to use open standards so at least we can use different OS specific clients if one is not available for both platforms. Googling hasn't yielded much and some of the results refer to really old (~2006) articles or apps. I hope I'm not doomed to using Skype. I've resisted so long with using SIP clients for voice but am stumped now that I want to include video.
I am looking for an easy to use svn client for linux.I have been suggested to use kdesvn. The problem with that client is that there are a few things that I do not understand.
In kdesvn there is the Subversion->Ceneral->check out repository and there is also the File->open,
1) what is the difference between these two?
2) Also is there a way every time I launch kdesvn to have the same repository loaded in the same working directory?
3) When I change something into a file should I do file or whole folder commit? I am not sure what will be the best based on that I only write one comment which in the first case associates with the file only and in the latter associates with the whole folder.
I'm wondering if you can share some tips in regards to finding .conf files in programs when installing using package managers. I'm scratching my head on the fact that when you install a program through yum/apt-get, I don't know what and where the software is being installed at. In Windows, I know that when it installs an application, it goes into the Program Files directory, it's that simple.I know Linux has predefined directories for applications but sometimes it installs configuration files in /etc or some other locations in /usr which I have a tough time sifting through.
Is there a way to trace what .conf or any files for that matter which relates to what software that needs it? It's just hard for me to understand what file relates to what application at the moment. As much as I would like to learn more about Linux, this process for me takes up alot of time. I hope you can help me out on this one.
If I were to lease a linux server on from a hosting company could someone among you give me a list of possible current uses/applications that would earn money these days?
I have a new system I built this week. I have the nvidia drivers installed, but desktop effects, googleearth and Quake4 all try to load the /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 from mesa-libGL and fail to start.I have two other machines, both with nvidia video, and don't have the problem with them. I've looked for differences on the systems, but haven't located anything so far.
I am looking for a free software that performs image comparison. I would prefer a non-GUI application as I need this to be automated. I am using Redhat Enterprise 3 and 4
What I want to do is force my DVD burner to use full writing power on the entire surface of a DVD. This should be able to invisibly damage the contained data, and should work on CDs, DVDs and BRDs too (in theory). I don't want to write data over it, so it's not a matter of having a RW disc or a R one. The result I want to obtain is simply an unreadable disc that does not look damaged. Do you know if there's a program able to ignore a disc being already full and perform this task?
I switched to Ubuntu a couple weeks ago, and I like it very much. The only problem I've got is I can't subscribe to podcasts as I used to with iTunes. Is there a podcast client like iTunes for Windows?
I'm currently working on a project to help visually impaired people. We're planning to use Orca screen reader for gnome. Everything is doing great but there is a problem with email web clients the most popular ones(gmail, yahoo, hotmail) are not optimized for screen readers. Is there some kind of simple email client optimized for this? Need to be very simple and straight foward and support multiple users too.40
