View 4 Replies View RelatedIt's a newbie question that has probably already been answered hundreds of times, but Google didn't help me.
How can I install an application I've downloaded from the internet?I know I can easily install software with the terminal (apt-get, yum etc.) and that there is also a package manager. But still I'd like to know how to install an application I've downloaded with the browser. I've downloaded Thunderbird from this link URL...and after unpacking, I have a folder called 'thunderbird'. Now, what do I have to do to install the application?
I'm not actually concerned with installing Thunderbird anymore because when I typed 'thunderbird' in the terminal, it told me that it isn't installed and if it should be installed. I replied 'y' and some minutes later (slow internet connection...) it was installed and ready to use..
i am running a red hat server and was wondering which service i have to have running in order to open downloaded applications?
View 1 Replies View RelatedAs a long time Windows user, I am stuck on the basics of installing and running downloaded Linux applications. I've tried to read a few tutorials but am still baffled. I am using a Puppy based boot CD and, of course, the applications that come with the Puppy all work fine. It is when I try to add something new that I become lost. Example: I just downloaded a Linux version of the Firefox browser.
I click on the downloaded file in the Download Manager and kinda expect the thing to give me a executable set-up file, but just get a whole bunch of files. One available option is to "extract" them. I create a folder to extract them to and "extract". With Firefox I see nothing in that folder. With a few other applications, I see an extracted list of files but and try to find one file that will magically start and install or boot an application, but nothing ever happens. So, how does one download , extract, install, and then run a basic application? The references I have found on the Internet tend to be rather old or more complex that my brain can handle.
I have just installed fedora 15, I haven't seen fedora since version 7 back in 2007, and I must say, it's very impressive.I can't however figure out how to add a downloaded application, like Intellij-Idea to the activities menu. With the old gnome, you could just create a task bar short cut to any .sh and give it a png icon, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to do the same for activities. Searching online doesn't help, since all I seem to find is how to add or remove packages, with the UI, which I would never do to begin with, as I am a command line person. But for some reason, I am quite impressed with this activities menu thing, and I want to use it on the laptop
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm wondering if you can share some tips in regards to finding .conf files in programs when installing using package managers. I'm scratching my head on the fact that when you install a program through yum/apt-get, I don't know what and where the software is being installed at. In Windows, I know that when it installs an application, it goes into the Program Files directory, it's that simple.I know Linux has predefined directories for applications but sometimes it installs configuration files in /etc or some other locations in /usr which I have a tough time sifting through.
Is there a way to trace what .conf or any files for that matter which relates to what software that needs it? It's just hard for me to understand what file relates to what application at the moment. As much as I would like to learn more about Linux, this process for me takes up alot of time. I hope you can help me out on this one.
If I were to lease a linux server on from a hosting company could someone among you give me a list of possible current uses/applications that would earn money these days?

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhat I want to do is force my DVD burner to use full writing power on the entire surface of a DVD. This should be able to invisibly damage the contained data, and should work on CDs, DVDs and BRDs too (in theory). I don't want to write data over it, so it's not a matter of having a RW disc or a R one. The result I want to obtain is simply an unreadable disc that does not look damaged. Do you know if there's a program able to ignore a disc being already full and perform this task?

1. all the packages downloaded are gone?, can I restart the installation using all those packages downloaded?
2. where I can find the error or problem that cause that the installation was freezed?
3. in the case that installation needs to start from the beginning, can I use the package downloaded?
I haven't used Ubuntu for a while, and just reinstalled it. I have one major dislike about the new version, There are several applications I click on and it takes me to the installer. How do I remove those types of applications or just install them all?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI feel shy asking this question but, 90% of the applications I install in Ubuntu (last release), do not show up later on in the applications menu, so I cant run them. View 1 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if there was any way to remove icons from the installed applications menu?I recently attempted to install GOG.com's Zork Anthology using Wine and when I de-installed, the icons for those files were still listed in installed applications. Is there anyway to delete them manually?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm setting up a large number of virtual machines, each with a basic set of about 30 applications. Obviously, I don't want to do everything manually so I'm looking for ways to automate this process. Multiple distributions (Ubuntu, Red Hat Ent., FreeBSD, CentOS, etc.) will be used, meaning I will have a few Ubuntu installs with the basic set of 30 applications, and multiple Red Hat installs with the same set, etc. So, I'm looking for advice on automating as much of this as I can, even if it means a new form of automation for each distro.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIs there a programmatic way to get the list of all installed applications on Linux.
Also, how can we get the application activities in Linux OS like running applications name, time of day when they started, duration till the applications were running on system, application version etc.
