Applications :: Good App To Either Convert The File Easily Into Something Readable

Jan 13, 2010

I have been scouring the internet looking for a good solution to reading .pdb eBooks on Linux. It seems that there isn't one.Could you perhaps recommend a good app to either convert the file easily into something readable or (more preferably) an app that can read them?

Ubuntu Security :: KeePassX Files Easily Readable With Text Editor

May 19, 2011

I have noticed and this now worries me, if I export a KeePassX xml file then open it with a text editor I can see all my private details.Just tested it on my old desktop with Slitaz and open the exported file with leafpad text editor and I can see my details just the same.Previously I used RoboForm and when viewing an exported file in the same way you could not make out any of my details. Is KeePassX designed this way or have I not used KeePassX correctly.I have posted this on KeePassX forum and emailed them direct with no response so far.Ubuntu 11.04.

Ubuntu Networking :: File Share In 10.04 Easily And Using GUI's Only?

Jun 5, 2010

How to File Share in Ubuntu 10.04 Easily and using GUI's only.Disclaimer: Sharing files in this way is not secure; so please make sure you only do this on a private network that has been properly secured. Otherwise any user on the network can access and modify your shared files; you have been warned!

1. "Applications" menu ->"Ubuntu Software Center" -> in the search box type "Samba" then install "Samba".Because even though you enabled file share and tried to share the files 10.04 seems to not actually install "Samba". Plus this installs the "Samba" GUI.)2. This step was removed to prevent confusion.3."System" menu -> "Administration" -> "Samba". Enter your password. In the GUI that opens up choose "Preferences" menu -> "Server Settings" then the "Security" tab change the authentication mode to share and the guest account to your user name account. This prevents permission problems later on.4. Choose the "Add a Samba Share"; the green plus icon; browse to the directory you wish to share. Place a check mark in "Writable" and "Visible". Then on the "Access" tab choose "Allow access to everyone".

5. Press OK; now your should be able to see the share from the other computers just choose "Places" menu -> "Network" then either the computer name if it shows up or select "Windows Network" -> "WORKGROUP" ->omputer Name then the Shared folder.Quote:2. Share the selected folder via natuilus, right-click on the folder and choose "Sharing Options" or "Properties" -> "Sharing" Tab. This may be an unnecessary step but at least we know Nautilus has applied the proper permissions for us; on the pop-up choose "Automatically Update Permissions".I hope that this helps as many of you as possible. If anyone has any updates please let me know. I am glad to see that this can finally be done all using GUI's now but it still should be as simple as sharing the folder with the "Sharing Options" selection in Nautilus. There is still work to be done on this in Ubuntu.

I am going to jump on Launch Pad and look for all of the bugs that I can find related to these issues and see if I can contribute what I have learned and maybe I can try to organize some of the bugs to get a collective fix in the works. I will post back any updates. Please If you used my method please note this is not the way it is supposed to be done in 10.04 so you are affected by the bug. Please go to this bug and be counted.

Ubuntu :: Creating Readable File From Multiple Html Files

Oct 2, 2010

Here is the deal: my school purchased a test prep which they distributed to us, the only problem is that it is for windows. When I try to run the exe in wine the program windows pops up but the screen is blank (i can see the menu bar and and the title bar). It appears that most of the information is located in a folder as html files (separated into chapters for each section) with links to all the figures/tables/questions
(also html files). This morning I have been trying to find a way to compile the html files into a format that I can read without having to hunt for each individual html file. I tried navigating with firefox but had to change each individual link before I could do that (very time consuming), I tried using doxygen (the GUI front end) to convert it to Latex/rtf/html/xml (all the formats) but did not have any success (It could be that I am using the app wrong). I tried opening some java applications found within the application data folder in hopes that it would bring up the navigator without success. And even tried installing java in wine (unsuccessfully) to see if that was the missing key to run the program in wine.

My question is, do I just have to fork out the $500+ that it would cost me to purchase the books instead of using the school provided program (free to us)? or is there a relatively simple way to compile these files into a format that could be readable.

tl;dr - have multiple html files for a windows native program that won't run on wine that I would like to convert to a more easily readable format (i.e. chm, pdf, etc), is it possible?the program was legally acquired through my school, I did not download or pirate it. I am not looking to distribute it, just looking to use it for my own studying purposes without spending $500+ or buying a windows license/computer.

General :: Pcfg_openfile - Unable To Check Htaccess File - Ensure It Is Readable

Jul 8, 2010

After moving a website folder on my local development machine to another drive, then moving it back, I got a 403 error. Most of this problem had probably to do with rights that got messed up. After deleting the code and restoring it from SVN, the rights seemed allright. The error stayed however.

The setup is a bit complex, as follows:

I have Ubuntu 10.4 as development machine, trying to mimic the server as much as possible We use Eclipse + SVN and I create all projects in a local folder under my user account In /var/www-vhosts I create folders for each vhost, like this one: test.localhost test.local/index.php: includes the index file of the project
test.local/.htaccess is a dynamic link to the htaccess file in a project subfolder

I get the following error in the apache error log:

The problem seems to be the .htaccess file, or the link to it. When I empty the htaccess, nothing changes When I remove the link, the index-include produces some output (in the apache error log) When I remove the link and replace it with the actual file, I get another error:

Software :: Finding A Tool That Can Directly Convert Mp3 File To A Swf File?

Jan 26, 2009

I'm looking for a tool that can directly convert mp3 file to a swf file. Tried ffmprg - 'ffmpeg -i master.mp3 -ar 22050 -ab 32 -f swf -y -vn new.swf', output is as follows:

Output #0, swf, to 'new.swf':
Stream #0.0: Audio: 0x0000, 22050 Hz, stereo, 0 kb/s
Stream mapping:
Stream #0.0 -> #0.0
Unsupported codec for output stream #0.0

I found a way to perform this task using ffmpeg to convert the mp3 file to a wav file, and converting the wav into a swf file using swftools (wav2swf), although this is not a good option because the output swf file size is very big - for a 12mb input 320kbps stereo mp3 file, the swf file is 25mb. Also downloaded a free direct mp3 to swf conversion software, which had an output swf file - with the same 12mb mp3 file - of ~400kb.

The requirements I have from the tool are:

1. Can be ran from the shell.

2. Direct conversion, or an indirect one that will produce a small output swf file.

3. Suport for multiple file conversion is a plus.

Programming :: Convert An Arbitrary Binary File Into A Executable File?

Feb 18, 2010

In a project I'm working on with a few other people, I got the task of writing an assembler. The last thing I do is convert the commands into a binary representation, and jam it into a file. Now one of my teammates said he'd like to be able to "reference" the code within another program. He said he'd be able to do this if the file I output is a Linux object file. I'm thinking it'd also work as an executable. Anyway, he said he'd like to be able to grab the file and reference the binary by address. I'm still fuzzy on this, and if you're confused with what I said here, please tell me so I can ask him for better details.Anyway, I'm aware that gcc can compile files to ".o", but that's only for C/C++, and my file is just binary. I'm also aware of "ld", but I haven't seen any use of it to help me. I'm happy to hear suggestions as to what I can do. If anything, I think I'll implement a few functions to grab the bits and hand them to him in an array or something.
