Software :: Messenger Client With Webcam Support

Aug 4, 2010

I want to enable webcam support so I'll be able to talk to people via webcam using linux (using Ubuntu 10.04). I've looked at some guides such as using Emesene messenger to no avail. Also I've tried to use Wine and install Msn Messenger 7.5, however I'm unable to type in my email address and password to login to the messenger client. I searched and read about installing some packages or whatever for wine to allow me to enter in text but to no avail. I've used the stable release of wine as well as the beta release for wine (by adding the deb url inside the software source list). I'm using empathy and there's a webcam icon next to my name under my gmail account, when I click that I can see myself just fine, but nobody can see that I have webcam support. =/ Any tips, hints, guides, direction..? I have an Asus Ul80vt and the webcam is a chicony something if that helps at all.

Debian :: Install The Empathy Instant Messenger That's In Lenny-backports?

Apr 10, 2010

I'm new to Debian, but have used Ubuntu so I'm relatively familiar with APT. Ubuntu doesn't have backports, though, and I can't figure this out. I've checked the documentation for the answer, and I'm hoping that I'm just overlooking something simple.

I'm running lenny, and I want to install the Empathy instant messenger that's in lenny-backports (v. 2.26.2-1). I already have the stable package installed, and here's what happens when I try to upgrade:

michael@archimedes:~$ sudo apt-get -t lenny-backports install empathy
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
empathy is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 118 not upgraded.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing Oracle Instant Client On Kubuntu?

Apr 3, 2011

how you install Oracle Instant Client on Kubuntu.I have Oracle XE and Lazarus installed on a KB machine, but Lazarus can't connect because it's missing the file "libociei.so".I found that file in the Oracle Instant Client which I downloaded and unzipped from Oracle.com. However, I have no idea how to install it. Normally you issue a "sudo" command of some sort. I can't just copy the files because I don't have privileges to copy to the system folders, and don't know where to copy them to anyway. The only online help I've found is for installing PHP with it, which I'm not interested in.

Debian Multimedia :: Any Way Get A VoIP-client With ZRTP-support For SIP

Jan 4, 2016

Is there any way get a VoIP-client with ZRTP-support for SIP, without having to add extra third party repos, ect.? Is there anything in the the Debian repo's that actually support this protocol at all?

None of the two clients I've tried so far (Linphone and SFLphone) work out of the box on Debian. Linphone doesn't work with ZRTP on Debian (bug #743474), it work an all other systems, but not for Debian. SFLphone is no longer supported, as it has gone to the project Ring, which cannot be installed without adding additional repos.

Ubuntu Installation :: Instant Power Off Before Booting

Jun 27, 2010

I have just installed Ubuntu in a Windows Vista system. The installation seemingly went fine. After installation, system restarted to boot menu (grub?) where I selected Vista. Vista started fine. I restarted the pc from the Vista login screen. Now the problems started. At grub, I chose Ubuntu. It began to start up, made it through the Ubuntu logo with the dots, some splash screen or wallpaper came up and *bam* the computer powered off. Next I Wanted to boot Vista again. Grub came up for a half-second before power-off.

I tried to boot from the CD again to see about repairing grub or just reinstalling. The installer ran for a second before power-off. Next, tried BIOS boot manager to boot from the HDD again. Powered-off at the BIOS boot manager screen before I could choose where to boot from. Twice in a row. Tried to boot into BIOS to check settings for anything odd. Powered-off within 1 second after I got into the BIOS. Finally, I would hit the power button and it would turn on and then power-off instantly.

I unpulgged my Logitech VX Revolution mouse and the charger (it's fully charged and holding fine). I thought maybe the computer was hot (feels normal though), so I waited one minute. After that, I was able to boot from Grub to Windows fine. I restarted the pc from the windows login screen to try Ubuntu again. Got into grub and just repeated the same process from before with the same results. Nothing works. I waited one minute again, and I was able to boot into Vista fine. I am posting this from Vista with everything connected and working fine.

I downloaded the 32bit desktop version from the "enhanced download page." I burned the iso with the Toshiba DiscCreator software that came with the computer. I've used DiscCreator many times before with great success. Ubuntu was burned to a normal 80min/700mb Maxell CD-R. I'm afraid to reboot from Vista now and find that one of these times, I won't be able to get back in. I installed Ubuntu into an empty 9.77gb partition and formatted it as ext3. Used an empty 1.46gb partition as swap.

Here's my setup:
Code:
Satellite A215 Detailed Product Specification1
Model Name: A215-S5837
Part Number: PSAEGU-03801J
UPC: 883974072095 .....

Ubuntu Security :: Secure P2p Instant Messaging

Is there a program already set up to do this? Probably similar to WASTE (URL...), though waste's client is currently unsupported on the newest version of ubuntu (make error having to do with char* or something). Preferably windows and linux supported. Another thing that could be of use would be a local ssh chat. For example someone connects to my box either as me or as another user and runs 'hiben' and a window (or i ran a command or something and have a window open for it) pops up that we can chat in. Something other than single line messages.

Hardware :: USB Port Results In Instant Death

Simple but puzzling problem. When I plug my USB mouse into one particular port, the mouse does not activate. Unplugging it kills the laptop. My laptop will not turn on unless the battery is removed and reinserted. I think this may be a power supply issue, but I'm not sure. I just recently purchased a new A/C power cable because my old one was toast, but this problem has been happening since before then. I'm getting a little irritated and was wondering if there is a diagnosis and solution to this problem.

Ubuntu :: Firefox Takes 30 Second To Start , Used To Be Instant / Resolve This?

Oct 16, 2010

My Firefox used to start instantly, or at least near instant, but since yesterday it took about 30 sec to launch. Opening subsequent windows is near instant, but once all windows are closed it would take a long time to open again.

When I open it up in a terminal, it has absolutely no error message, clean start up and shutdown.

I turned up the CPU clock speed from 1.2GHz to 2.0GHz and it doesn't seem to help. Other programs starts fine too, so I kind of ruled out performance issue.

Yesterday I also tinkered with compiz settings and also installed the cairo dock and some media codecs. But I can't pinpoint when does it happen exactly, I also struggle to draw any relationship if there is any. And if it matters Firefox is 3.6.10 and Ubuntu is 10.04.

Fedora :: Change Power Settings To Stop Instant Hibernation?

Jun 28, 2011

I'm coming over from Ubuntu and am experiencing the same power issue I had there, only there doesn't seem to be a setting in Gconf in Fedora like there was in Ubuntu that can fix it. You know how the system determines whether or not to hibernate based on the amount of time the battery has been unplugged? Well there's a bug in Gnome that makes it say I have only two minutes left on a full battery,

so if I ever unplug my laptop it immediately goes in to hibernation. Now in Ubuntu there was a Gconf Editor setting that could be changed so that it went by percentage, but this option seems to be gone in Fedora. I have Gconf Editor installed but I can't find the setting anywhere.

Ubuntu Networking :: Browsing Window 7 System Causes Instant BSOD?

Aug 31, 2010

Ubuntu but an advanced user on Windows. On my home Workgroup network, I an running Ubuntu 10.04.1 on a spare PC and Windows 7 Professional on a fast 4 core AMD PC. I built both PCs myself. The Win7 system is fully updated with maintenance. So is the Ubuntu system. The Win7 desktop system sees and shares files and printers with an XP SP3 laptop and Win 7 Home edition Netbook... and the the Ubuntu system The Ubuntu system can browse and see shares on the the XP Laptop but not the Window 7 Desktop or Netbook. Both Win7 systems can browse and share the the Ubuntu system. There are no current problems anywhere in my Windows network.

Ubuntu gets into a login loop when trying to see the Win7 systems. But before that problem gets solved.I have problem with random BSODs (00007f) on the Windows 7 systems immediately when I first try to browse the network from Ubuntu. The effect is instantaneous. You click on an icon that will browse the network and bingo the Windows system takes a BSOD 00007f dump. This appears to be something new in 10.04.1. I have loaded 8.04 and 9.10 in past just for training and and curiosity reasons and never had this problem. In the past, I lost interest and never went deeper. This time I have a dedicated PC in my network for Ubuntu and need to get deeply into Linux. I am trying to get up to speed on Linux this time around because I find that Linux systems are appearing in the network at work and I need to understand how to use and network Linux.
