Ubuntu :: Need A Good Robust Configurable DC++ Client?
Jul 10, 2010
Need a good robust configurable DC++ client., because I am getting slow connections with the latest stable and PPA version of Linuxdc++. Yes it may be a unknown config problem, but even with UFW disabled and using "passive" mode, DL's are consistently falling to 500 B/s. Source report that there is no problem at that end.

I am looking for a good alternative to Skype. I would like to have video and voice calls with a family member who uses MS XP but would like to avoid Skype if possible. Does anyone know of a good client with good video and voice quality that will work on both platforms. I'd like it to use open standards so at least we can use different OS specific clients if one is not available for both platforms. Googling hasn't yielded much and some of the results refer to really old (~2006) articles or apps. I hope I'm not doomed to using Skype. I've resisted so long with using SIP clients for voice but am stumped now that I want to include video.

I've been using Windows for quite a few years now. I loved the way how I used to set incoming/outgoing rules for my applications. But I'm having hard time doing that in Ubuntu. I tried searching for a good GUI for iptables but I need your help selecting the best. I might learn iptables someday but for the time being I will be using a nice GUI. I'm currently using GUFW, I've tried Firestarter. All I need is a firewall that would allow me to configure rules for my applications.

I have try RAT (Robust Audio Tool) for testing IPv6 unicast (just RAT) and IPv6 multicast (RAT and SDR "Session Directory Tool" ). I meet the problem when testing RAT with unicast (why just two computer that can doing audio conference).
i found source of the problem from the RAT faq here: Originally Posted by the source of problem... How to multi-unicast? If you really must...
The packet reflector application that we use for debugging may also be used as a packet forwarder between multiple unicast hosts. Documentation is included in the package. This is not incorporated in the application as this mode of operation is evil and should be discouraged unless used for really small groups. Robust Audio Tool but i didn't found the file reflector.tar.gz, i try to use quagga installed from repository (to be reflector) but i don't know how to configure that software.

I'm syncing a server over the internet with rsync, but it only works for a few hours before the backup fails with a "No route to host". I can restart the job and it'll will pick up where it left off, but is there an automated way to do this, or protect against a connection failure? I have about 170GB to copy over initially, but I can only get through about 4-5GB before the connection drops--manually restarting the sync everytime it drops will make the initial backup take days...

I'm running Fedora 11, and just did an update of the system. It looks like there was an update to the package that takes care of knetwork manager. In the past, I have played around with it, but it hasn't met my needs, so I went back to nm-applet, which works fine.
I'm curious about the update, and would like to see if it works. However, knetwork manager won't start as there is another network manager already running (there is a message about this everytime I log in). I can easily kill nm-applet, but logging out and back in causes it to reload, and I still get the message from knetwork manager. So here are my questions:
1) With the update, is knetwork manager stable and robust enough for regular use (the docs for F11 said it wasn't upon F11 release, so included gnome's network manager as the default network manager)?
2) How do I get knetwork manager to work (I presume this means I turn off Gnome's network management and switch to knetwork management)?

I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on a laptop with a second monitor configured as a separate x screen.
I configured the workspace switcher applet on the laptop screen to be 2x2 and it changed appropriately. When I go to the preferences for the workspace switcher on the second screen it says it's set to two columns and two rows but still displays as the default four columns and one row and any changes made have no effect.
I changed the setting num_rows from one to two under apps/panel/applets/workspace_switcher_screen1/prefs using gconf-editor and restarted my gnome-panels but it had no effect.
Is there anyway to make the workspace switcher on the second screen display as 2x2?

I have installed bind9 for DNS. I have also installed Apache2, PHP5, MySQL, and correctly configured these together. When I view domain1.co.uk it currently works fine as required. I would like to change it to:
* /var/www/domain1.co.uk/prod/ - becomes the root dir of domain1.co.uk
* /var/www/domain2.co.uk/prod/ - becomes the root dir of domain2.co.uk
Nevertheless, I have created a the following files; these are copies of the "default" file and correctly amended. the required destination directories are in place!
* /etc/apache2/sites-available/domain1.co.uk
* /etc/apache2/sites-available/domain2.co.uk
I then executed:
Code:
sudo ln -s domain1.co.uk ../sites-enabled/domain1.co.uk
Code:
sudo ln -s domain2.co.uk ../sites-enabled/domain2.co.uk
It is important to understand domain1.co.uk and domain2.co.uk represent 2 Existing domain names I own, and both point to my server.
domain1.co.uk currently works in /var/www
Why I would like multiple domain names on the server.

KDE 4 has prompted me to try Gnome -- and I like what I see. It's beautiful, clean, and use-oriented. I especially like Nautilus and the system monitor and the terminal program and simple but helpful features like the F10 menu key. It's inspired software!But nothing's perfect. For one thing, Gnome doesn't seem to be as configurable as KDE. I tried to change the maximize keystroke to Ctrl-Alt-M, to no avail. I'd also like to change F10, since that conflicts with the mc (Midnight Commander) exit key, but I don't know how to do it.
The black screen at startup has recurred.This time, I wads not able to get out by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 and restarting gdm from the root: Ctrl-Alt-F1 had no effect.I had to reboot.The problem occurred after gnome flashed and then blanked a login screen.I thought the lack of a login might be the cause, so I added another user and used YaST to ask that the login panel be shown.Well, gnome still isn't giving me a chance to login, but at least the black screen problem has disappeared for now, at least.

I have a configuration file for a network device(2100 lines). This device is configurable only over console line. If I copy chunks of those lines into terminal(I use minicom), there will be mistakes (sometimes some characters missing, space characters added etc). Hardware flow control and software flow control doesn't help either(as I use RS232-to-USB converter, I'm even not sure, if RTS and CTS signals are implemented). I tried with cu utility, but same issues appeared. There will be mistakes even if I copy in ~100 line parts. What causes those missing/added characters? Is there a terminal emulation program under Linux, which supports pausing before each byte/line transfer?

There are routers with firewalls which you cannot configure - you just use those routers and get some protection from Internet attacks. Is it possible to configure iptables on GNU/Linux machine so that you'll get better protection than the protection you get from those kind of routers?

Before I start writing my own file maintenance script, maybe one such program/scripts already exist somewhere. Am looking for a file maintenance script/application that is configurable that I can use to process files under certain criteria, for example, removing files that are x-number of days old, gzip'ping files if they are core dumped files, removing files if they are zero-sized files etc. Am not sure logrotate is the solution that am looking for.

trying to create a "local network" by directly connecting an IBM Thinkpad with Debian Linux installed on it to an Alix computer running Voyager Linux. I'm following a "how to" I found to create a music server, hence the requirement. My issue is I can't get a static IP address to be configured on the Debian machine.I've trawled the net and have found the instructions about editing the /etc/network/interfaces and have tried to do this. First I tried to get DHCP working so I could connect the Debian machine to the net and this proved successful. I edited the interfaces file to look as follows:
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
Then I tried adding a static IP address to the machine. As this is a network purely between two machines I made up the IP addres and used 192.168.0.1 and used a NetMask calculator to give me a NetMask of 255.255.255.254 (I told the calculator there would be 2 machines on the network). I then edited the interfaces file as follows:
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
[code]....
I re-booted the machine (ifdown eth0 followed by ifup eth0 keeps saying that eth0 hasn't been configured - a problem there that I don't understand), but during boot up time it failed to assign the Static IP address to eth0 and made me go into SU mode. To fix it I simply replaced the interface file with the static IP inputs with the file that had the DHCP entries (I'd made a copy of the DHCP file), and re-started the machine. Everthing came up fine. So the first question is how do I get a static IP address to be assigned to eth0 such that whenever I shut down and restart the machine the static IP address is always loaded?
The second question is around creating the network via the cross over cable. From what I've found via Google, all I should have to do is create a static IP address on the Debian machine and a static IP address on the Voyager machine. Once they're connected by the cross over cable they should see each other. Is that correct, or do I have to do anything else?

I am writing a TCP server in C, and the server listens to incoming client connections and accepts them. It then creates a thread to handle the client. The clients are expected to only receive data from my server and not send any data. So if I use a select() call with a recv(), I believe that the recv() will just block forever since there will not be any data coming from the client. If I use a non-blocking recv(), then this will just return a 0 which tells me nothing because the client is not expected to send any data. I am not sure if I have misunderstood some socket concepts, but I need a solution to detect when the client has disconnected so that I can close the socket and stop sending data to the client. As I understand it, simple ACKs etc are not captured by the recv(), and only data sent by the client will cause recv() to return a non-zero value, so I am not sure how to know when the client has disconnected.

(please make it an idiot proof anwser because i have limited knowledge about iptables). I was thinking like forwarding (the router in the network with the openvpn client is also firewalling with iptables) the request of the ip class of the openvpn network to the computer with the client,which masquarades the interface

I tried a lot of web browsers, but I can't find a good one.
I want a web browser that:
- can open most webpages and show all content including javascript, flash and whatever (unlike elinks which is text-only)
- is controllable entirely by keyboard and preferably with vim-like controls. (unlike firefox, google chrome).
- works out of the box (unlike uzbl)
- is fast
- is bugfree (unlike firefox and uzbl)
- is configurable
So please recommend a good web browser and tell me what features would make a web browser good.

I heard that Simple Backup 0.10.4 has bugs that doesn't allow it to create backups or replace them well.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
Is it true?
If so, what do you advise me to run in my Server to create regular backups of my shared folders with Win7 machines? I want it to make full backups not incremental ones if possible. and it has to be free, because i have to use it in a small enterprise.

i am using xubuntu and love it so far! fast and stable, but i have a question. i am not a big gamer, just a few casual games, i am also not an office document user. i do not use openoffice.org or libreoffice, i just have my basic text editor. i do not do any web developing or anything. basically i reply to and send a few emails a day. i use gmail for that, not an email program, i use facebook a few times a day. i watch a few tv shows online. i videos occasionally, and i post on these forums. but my computer feels empty, is there any good programs i can just play around with. conky was one, its alright, a little confusing though. is there just any fun programs to play with. i don't care what they are, work processors, or web browsers, just some oddball programs or something? heck i don't know, i am just bored on my pc and looking for some entertainment.
