ever since i installed 11.1 last summer, there has been this four note chord that sounds off at seemingly random times. (it's not in 10.3 as i'm still running two of them.) i've not been able to find what it is and turn it off. at first i thought it was thunderbird, nope. then something in firefox, don't really think so. it's not a system sound that i can find. sure would like to disable it.

I'm having an issue with my display. Every few minutes or so it dims and a 4 note chord is played.
I have isolated it to: "new-host-5org.kde.powerdevil.backlighthelperQDBusConnection: system D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave".
And it most certainly is misbehaving. I'm running Jessie 8.2 with the KDE desktop on a HP Elitebook 8730w with NVIDIA Quadro G94GLM graphics.
I have a problem with a note on the server. When I try to open it I get the message "OOPS-D-1594appserver96743". I can't open or delete this file anymore. Since I have this problem the sync with Tomboy also doesn't work. Is there way to delete this broken note on the server?
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues. The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I'm getting sound, but not in some applications. The system's sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing,zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.
I've tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable.... I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the "pcm" channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card's pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser's. Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.
So, I read a lot of PDFs and I would like to be able to take notes on it and export as a pdf so it can be read by other PDF viewers. I've read a few older posts about this and xournal sounded like a good option. I've tried whytboard a little and didn't really seem like what I wanted. I also like zotero for research stuff and the note taking they have for webpage SS and documents is GREAT but I haven't been able to get pdf to work for note taking or maybe it isn't implemented yet? If there was a way to make Zotero notes to work with pdf that would be perfect!
Also, its been a few years since the last pdf notes post that I could find, what are people using these days? any noteworthy programs?
I'm trying to install fedora 10 onto the HP mini note, I have read how to install from another forum but it does not seem to work. I have setup a USB install using unetbootin. I only get white box lines for a mouse cursor the when it finally begins like it is about to boot into the live installation it freezes and can go no further.

However, I don't use KDE, and installing it on something else (CrunchBang in my case, which is Ubuntu-based) can mean a huge number of dependencies. (e.g. 28 MB just for kde-icons-oxygen, an icon theme). I don't know if most of them are actually needed though - relatively few "k..." programs are actually showing in the task manager when I run basket: kded, kdeinit, kio_file, klauncher, and knotify.

I'm trying to figure out how to change the tomboy saving notation (.note) to (.txt). I'm fairly new to Linux so I may be wrong in thinking this is possible. However, if it is possible, a finger in the right direction would be appreciated.
PS: if it isn't possible, maybe there is a way to change the name of the actual .note files in ~/.local/share/tomboy/ to something more readable. Right now they show up like this:

I just installed Debian (lenny) on my HP 2133 Mini-Note (KX869AT). I've managed to get everything working, even the Broadcom wireless adapter, but the display is too large for the actual screen size. To get the screen to a more manageable resolution, I did copy the xorg.conf file of another HP 2133 Mini-Note user. (It was probably a different model; there are several versions of the HP 2133, hence the model number in the description.) Icons and things hide off-screen. The text on the GNOME panel is quite large.

I'm just starting out with Ubuntu 10.10 on the desktop, (got VPS experience) and I'm running into an issue when installing Ubuntu 64bit. One that I'm unable to reproduce with the 32bit (x84/i368) disk. Just to note, the ISO's and disks have been checked with matching MBR.
I'm able to run the live CD on both versions perfectly. However when I press next after the 3th step of installation (The one in which you can choose whether you want to install updates and 3th party software or not), the Ubuntu 64 bit version stalls. Ubuntu doesn't freeze or anything, but it just doesn't seem able to go to the next step. (Partitioning)The odd thing about is that I can access the step perfectly on the 32bit disk. Now here is the question..... What could be the clarification for this issue and would it be possible to resolve it? (If so, how?)
P.S. Attached you can find a dxdiag output of the laptop. It's an Acer Aspire 7520G.
I've got an urgent problem! I had some viruses as my program told me and in the end I had to restart my eee pc!Problem is now after it starts and you click on the log me in icon for the netbook it makes the nice hello sound, takes some time and then does the shut down (goodbye) sound. So basically the netbook booted already right? But I cant log myself in! What can I do?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI installed Mangler and one of its requirements was pulse-audio. I installed pulse-audio everything worked great except i couldn't get sound out of wow if i started mangler first and vice-versa. I then found a version of Mangler that worked with alsa. So i uninstalled mangler and pulse-audio, installed mangler-alsa. Everything works great now. The problem is when i uninstalled Pulse-audio i lost all my sliders in Yast > Hardware > Sound > other > volume. The only thing that shows up is master volume > Test. My sound works great just can't adjust anything. How do i get my sliders back. I would like some advice before i screw something up. Intel Core i5, under Sound Configuration in YaST I have '5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio'and 'nVidia Corporation'I have built in speakers in my screen, connected via HDMI. I recently bought a set of 2.1 speakers, all is fine. I like to listen to my DAB radio through them. When I boot up, (runlevel 3), sound is there via the mic/line-in jack, but as soon as KDE starts, the sound cuts. I can get it back by:~>alsamixerand then F6 and then scroll to mic, switching to ON and slider up to full and then mic boost up to 65% or so.Can I tell something in KDE to default to mic/line-in on?kmix does not give the full picture I see in other's posts, like here:ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hostingjust a single slider under each tab, like this:

Maybe it's just an Amarok2 problem, but whenever another app (for example Konversation) plays a sound file, the audio instantly cuts out (in Amarok2) and will not come back unless I quit Amarok2 and restart it.
Amarok2 has only the options - "HDA ATI SB VT 1708S Analog" or "PulseAudio" (which is NOT installed).

I encountered this on a 10.3 system but there might be similar problem with the 11 series. Having gone through the business of obtaining config info on this card via pnpdump and subsequently using Yast to configure and install it, I encountered a situation whereby the card was fully functional as far as the "Test Sound" option of Yast was concerned. However, after a reboot, it was not loaded and no sound was possible. Debugging the "alsasound" script, I discovered that the directory /proc/asound was not in place at that time and, therefore, sound was not started.
The solution was to add the module name (snd_sbawe) to /etc/sysconfig/kernel to the parameter "MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT". Seems like Yast did not see a reason to do this itself.
I recently installed the x64 rpm of OSS on my Opensuse 11.2 installation (alsa does not have drivers for my lynx card). Sound works beautifully in KDE (login sounds, apps produce sound, etc), EXCEPT for firefox. I can get no sound at all from firefox. I am baffled at why only firefox does not play audio.

I have configured my sound drivers many times. After doing this i am able to listen a sound. But after booting there is necessary to configure them again. So is there a any way for permanent configuration.

I installed 11.3 but haven't been able to get any sound out of it. The laptop is a Compaq Presario CQ45-307tx (more specs at link below) [URL] The first thing I tried was I updating the alsa firmware using the konsole command "zypper install alsa-firmware". The firmware updated fine, but still no sound. The next thing I tried was editing a file based on the advice found at the link below. [URL] This didn't work either, but I wasn't too optimistic to begin with due the differences between our systems.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have to recreate a new version of my old thread about my laptop Lenovo Thinkpad EDGE(13) sound trouble. At this point I simply have no clue and tired of trying to fix it. Well after reboot I have no sound in movies, only mp3 has sound, and I can play them via any player. Well to make my video have sound I have to always yast>sound> and manualy setup my Azalia(HDA intel) driver "Fix DMA pointer" to "0" value and my "Use single command to communicate with codecs" to "0" value also, then everything starts to work until next reboot. I don't know why the config is reseted always. I installed new kernel even in hope that my soundcard would work properly, but nothing changed. I reported a bug even, but dunno whether it will be fixed or not, now, if I can write my sound config manually and save it so it is not reseted or anything. Or maybe I can write a script that at autostart will write the desired config for my soundcard, just anything. I'm frustrated at this point, coding as I don't know bash, so I cant do it myself, I need code so I could make a script out of it.
