I have no internet connection. I am running dual boot windows XP and ubuntu. The card works fine in windows, but doesn't work at all in Ubuntu. This is the card I am using Realtek rtl8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet Nic. I am using Ubuntu 8.10, codename intrepid. I hate windows because of the viruses I contract everyday, so I decided to use Ubuntu, but this does no good without networking. so I can get online. What I do now? It is an onboard LAN card, cable is plugged in a green light is on, ubuntu just doesn't recognize it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on an older PC and I'm having problems with the network card built into the motherboard. When I connect an ethernet cable into the ethernet port I get a solid amber light, and I can't connect to my router, (which is being directly connected). Nothing is shown in Network Connections, but on another PC with the same version of Ubuntu it shows "Auto eth0", and it works just fine connecting with the router. How do I fix this? I'm an Ubuntu noob so I'm not really sure what to do here.
The network card is an Intel 82547EI Gigabit LAN controller, and Intel's website offered a driver available for my kernel version of Linux. However I was typing everything it told me to do in terminal, (which half the time I have no clue what I'm typing actually means), but I ended up getting some errors towards the end of the install process. I'm not sure if I messed something up or the driver just isn't going to work.
I'm hoping there is an easier fix for this, I've been searching the net all night trying to find someone with a similar problem and I haven't found any. I think I have another ethernet card which I might pop in and see if that works....but I figure I'll most likely run into the same problem because I know for sure the motherboards network card works - has on Windows, I just can't get it working in Ubuntu.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 Server. I can't get my Wireless Card & Wired Card to work at the same time. My interfaces file is incorrect, when I comment out 1 of the interfaces the other works. I have attached my interfaces file.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Xubuntu on my old P3 laptop (Compaq Armada E500 if anyone is familiar). The laptop is a bit old, so both wired and wireless networking is done via PCMCIA cards. I have 2 cards installed, one for each purpose. I can't find the dongle for the wired card right now, so I am trying to use the wireless card. I am able to find the network I want to connect to, and type in the password since the network is secured. It tries to connect but then pops up again asking for the password (I know it is correct). Is this card supported by linux/compatible? I tried finding drivers online but the sites that had drivers were down.
View 1 Replies View RelatedJust installed Fedora 14 from the Live CD i686 on my Dell Inspiron 1521. I can't connect to the SpeedTouch 585 on either wireless broadcom card or the wired Ethernet card.
I can connect to it from the same Laptop on the Vista which is on dual boot on the same laptop.
Further confusing is that I ran Fedora 14 and connected to another SpeedTouch today.
Already checked the Channel on the wireless nic and it's on the same one as the SpeedTouch.
I'm running slackware 12.2 and I have yet to get the b44 kernel driver working with 2.6.27.31 (custom build, b44 compiled in). Does it require a firmware cutter (ex. b43-fwcutter)? Does it work in later kernel versions out-of-the-box?
On a second note, if it is better supported in later kernels, would it be problematic to upgrade kernels (for instance, anything other than just building the new kernel via instructions in the Slackbook)?
I have searched many times but just have come across "it should work" which it doesn't, at least here...
I have been looking around the forums searching for similar problems, it seems not only me had this problem. About a month ago I did a regular update via Upd Manager. The next day - no wired connection.Still managable, since the local library has wireless. Now that won't work either.Just after I upgraded from Jaunty, I accidentally removed NetwMngr from the top right corner of the screen, but that should not have anything to do with how the program works, right? I now cannot reach NM, if I run it from the terminal, nothing happens visibly.

I have a 64 bit install of Ubuntu 10.04, I was surfing up to 11:30pm EST last night, shut down for the night, upon reboot am unable to connect to the internet or my local network. Ubuntu seems to think that I have no ethernet cables connected. My networking is controlled by my motherboard (Gigabyte P55A-UD4P) and the problem is not on my cable modems side. The modem has multiple wired jacks, all of them are unresponsive with my Ubuntu PC while my roommate can connect to all of them with his Windows 7 PC. Both network cables (the one connecting to his box and the one connecting to mine) are interchangeable: They both work on his and neither on mine, so there is no broken cable.I've followed the troubleshooting in other posts, here are some commonly requested diagnostics:
ifconfig -a
Code:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 6c:f0:49:53:1f:c0

I have used a wireless LAN PCI card for 3 years and now I want to switch back to the onboard wired LAN card but I cant get it to recognize and I have enabled it in BIOS also the wireless LAN card has been removed.Should I put it back in and then try to switch?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am facing a problem with the management of my network card after installing Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit Desktop edition.
There are two Network Cards and one USB adapter which I'd like to drive:
- Ethernet controller Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5703X Gigabit Ethernet (rev 02)
- Ethernet controller Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
- Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187 Wireless Adapter
Actually I need the wireless adapter to connect to the AP, so both of the ethernet card should be disabled. Infact, when I try to access to the AP I must disable the eth0 card by using (sudo ifconfig eth0 down), otherwise the route assigns the default gw (192.168.1.1) to the eth0 device and the network is useless.
Would it be possible to insert another wired network card into the router-connected computer, share the internet connection and be able to transfer files between the two?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just started having a problem with my 10.04 laptop a few days ago, maybe Thursday, last week. When the computer is plugged into my home network (standard 192.168.1.1 sort of IPs) it works fine, but when I try to connect to my work network (130.15.90.XX) I am unable to pick up an IP. The router in my office is working fine, all the windows boxes can connect.
I've also noticed that when the computer is plugged in at work the notification icon for the networking indicates it is looking for a wireless connection (rather than the normal up/down arrows), even if wireless is deactivated
I can set a static IP in /etc/network/interfaces and everything works, so it seems to be a DHCP problem?
I'm using RedHat Linux. In my friend system have Winxp. I have 2 LAN Cards. I'm using wired Broadband internet. So i want to share my internet connection to my friend system through another one LAN card. How can i do this
View 2 Replies View RelatedOk, so I upgraded my acer aspire one to the new Ubuntu 10, and at first everything was working fine, except the audio. Now, for some reason, my wireless and ethernet ports have died. I can't get online by either method. I can do ifconfig <device> up and it will show up if i do iwconfig or ifconfig, but the wireless isn't associated with the AP. Currently I'm trying to load some drivers for my atheros card, and we'll see how that works outReally I was wondering, how come the modules don't load at boot time, and how can I fix this? I've been a Linux user for quite sometime, however I've been more of end user
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed Lucid Lynx on my Dell Vostro 1000 laptop. The problem I'm having is that my wired network card has died on me prior to installation. I'm having the hardest time finding the required files to make my Broadcom BCM4311 wireless card work without being able to download any packages from the web. If anyone knows which files I need and which order I should use to install them that would be great.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently did a fresh install of 10.04 from 9.04 and since then I am unable to use Internet. However my ethernet connection is working fine, as I am able to login to modem and check configuration. I reinstalled twice, downloaded fresh 64-bit & 32-bit and also followed kernel update steps as in few forum posts, but no joy. The firefox is throwing an error "The connection has timed out". My internet connection is working fine as I am able to use my Windows Laptop to post this message. I checked system > administration > hardware drivers and couldn't find any unsupported hardwares.I had similar issue when upgrading to 9.10, hence stayed on 9.04. When I looked at LTS image, I couldn't resist and cleaned up 9.04.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI dualboot Win7 and Ubuntu 10.04 for quite a long time now with no problems.... but now wireless works perfect on Win7, but I can't even connect Ubuntu with a direct wired connection.... ubuntu connects to the actual Linksys Wireless router just fine, but just won't take the internet, and I've tried two different Wireless cards.this all started (I dunno if its relevant or not) when I put in a new TV tuner, which I obviously took out right away. But the problem is still there. I don't think its the card, I'm pretty sure its just some kind of setting that I've messed up or something because when I connect to the network its near 100%.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a wired problem in Ubuntu 10.10, My Ubuntu can connect with Wireless network, however it cannot connect to Wired Connection. I installed dual System, one is Ubuntu 10.10, the other one is Win7. Under Win7, I can both connect to the Internet in Wired or Wireless mode.
The more wired phenomenon is: When I plug in the cable, I can see the icon connected in my network manager. But I cannot visit any URLs. By checking the "ifconfig -a", I can see the IP addr was assigned to my eth0.

Running a wired connection through a Linksys router that suddenly stopped working today.I thought this was a ipv6 issue sinced I enabled some of those settings to share a connection with my PS3.I have since disabled IPv6 in Firefox and through the grub. The RealTek adapter will not even show a connection through the network manager when connected. The onboard adapter will show a connection, give me a ip address and MAC but still will not load the internet. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling both adapters through the network connections, as well as reinstalling Firefox to no avail.I've also tried using Open DNS servers.I cannot ping through the network tools either. Hard for me to paste a ifconfig since I'm on my laptop.I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 (not dual booting).I did some updates this morning but it worked fine for a little while after that, until I tried to connect to my PS3.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently installed 11.04 on my PC (was running 9.04), and beforehand "tried it out" and networking was fine. I could access the internet no problem.I then ran the install, and fully formatted my HDD (i have 1 HDD for the OS and another for storage)It crashed halfway thorough, so no problem, i just re-formatted the hardrive and installed. However, It didnt connect to the internet, I literally tried every single forum looking for the solution, including editing the Network interface file. After a bit of diggingfound my user privileges did not allow me to connect to ethernet, and randomly use audio devices.SO, no problem I checked the boxes, but it still wont connect to the ethernet now, and it was fine before, tried re-installing twice with full format, but still doesnt work.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWired and wireless networking have been working flawlessly for years on my HP Compaq 6710b laptop. Several weeks ago, after an automatic update via the update manager, my wired network stopped working. I did not notice it directly, since my wireless connection took it over. I only noticed it when I had to work in an office where I didn't know the wireless password.Since then, I have been trying several things and searched several forums. It is hard to find any troubleshooting information about wired networking, as most of the problems seem to occur with wireless.
I did verify that there is no hardware problem. My laptop is dual boot and when I boot the other operating system, the wired network works without problems (as does the wireless.)My Ubuntu version is Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS. My kernel version is 2.6.32-25-generic i686. I hope anybody can help me getting my wired network working again.
After installing UNR onto my dell mini 9 and downloading the correct drivers to enable wireless internet (using this site: [URL]), I decided to load ubuntu onto my brothers netbook. After the installation completed, I went to do complete the steps listed in the above article, however I was unable to connect to the internet using an ethernet wire.

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 into my compaq notebook. The problem is that I am not able to connect to my wired broadband internet.
Here are the details of my attempts so far:
1)"ifconfig -a" gave 2 devices eth0 and wlan0.
2)"pppoeconf" was unable to detect any ethernet cards.
3)Each time I plug in the LAN cable , the network icon would say "connecting" and ultimately result in "disconnected. Now in offline mode".My ethernet device is Realtek PCIe RT8101E/RTL102E (rev 02).
I also tried to install the realtek driver though I was not confident whether I did it correct.
I recently upgraded to 10.04 and now my wired network no longer works. I am unsure if it worked at all since the upgrade as that computer is rarely used, but it was definitely working prior to the upgrade. It is some sort of Realtec card, I believe. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm running 32 bit 10.04 on a 2 GHz P4.
View 3 Replies View RelatedEverything seems to be fine while she is connected via Wireless. When she plugs in the wired connection a problem occurs, it seems that every SSL Site and/or encrypted Website cannot be shown on her Notebook, for example shopping at Amazon.com. The Problem does not persist the whole time, sometimes it works for a few seconds and you are able to fill your cart.
Other Informations: The Connection has been tested with Windows 7 and with Ubuntu (USB-Live-Stick Lucid)... no difference.
Is it possible that her Hardware is not running correctly? What should we do next?
Tomorrow we want to reset the computer to factory default status.
Are there any possibilities of testing a SSL Connection using the Terminal?
