Ubuntu Networking :: Wired Network Card Not Detecting Lan Cables?

I have a 64 bit install of Ubuntu 10.04, I was surfing up to 11:30pm EST last night, shut down for the night, upon reboot am unable to connect to the internet or my local network. Ubuntu seems to think that I have no ethernet cables connected.My networking is controlled by my motherboard (Gigabyte P55A-UD4P) and the problem is not on my cable modems side. The modem has multiple wired jacks, all of them are unresponsive with my Ubuntu PC while my roommate can connect to all of them with his Windows 7 PC. Both network cables (the one connecting to his box and the one connecting to mine) are interchangeable: They both work on his and neither on mine, so there is no broken cable.I've followed the troubleshooting in other posts, here are some commonly requested diagnostics:

I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 on an old family laptop. It is a Compaq Presario V2000. Everything works perfectly except no wireless networks are recognized, even though I know there are available networks. My network controller is detected but is not doing it's job, which is finding available wireless networks! Using "system testing" I found this out about my network controller:

I am facing a problem with the management of my network card after installing Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit Desktop edition.
There are two Network Cards and one USB adapter which I'd like to drive:
- Ethernet controller Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5703X Gigabit Ethernet (rev 02)
- Ethernet controller Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
- Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187 Wireless Adapter
Actually I need the wireless adapter to connect to the AP, so both of the ethernet card should be disabled. Infact, when I try to access to the AP I must disable the eth0 card by using (sudo ifconfig eth0 down), otherwise the route assigns the default gw (192.168.1.1) to the eth0 device and the network is useless.

I just installed Lucid Lynx on my Dell Vostro 1000 laptop. The problem I'm having is that my wired network card has died on me prior to installation. I'm having the hardest time finding the required files to make my Broadcom BCM4311 wireless card work without being able to download any packages from the web. If anyone knows which files I need and which order I should use to install them that would be great.

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on an older PC and I'm having problems with the network card built into the motherboard. When I connect an ethernet cable into the ethernet port I get a solid amber light, and I can't connect to my router, (which is being directly connected). Nothing is shown in Network Connections, but on another PC with the same version of Ubuntu it shows "Auto eth0", and it works just fine connecting with the router.How do I fix this? I'm an Ubuntu noob so I'm not really sure what to do here.
The network card is an Intel 82547EI Gigabit LAN controller, and Intel's website offered a driver available for my kernel version of Linux. However I was typing everything it told me to do in terminal, (which half the time I have no clue what I'm typing actually means), but I ended up getting some errors towards the end of the install process. I'm not sure if I messed something up or the driver just isn't going to work.
I'm hoping there is an easier fix for this, I've been searching the net all night trying to find someone with a similar problem and I haven't found any. I think I have another ethernet card which I might pop in and see if that works....but I figure I'll most likely run into the same problem because I know for sure the motherboards network card works - has on Windows, I just can't get it working in Ubuntu.

I recently installed Xubuntu on my old P3 laptop (Compaq Armada E500 if anyone is familiar). The laptop is a bit old, so both wired and wireless networking is done via PCMCIA cards. I have 2 cards installed, one for each purpose. I can't find the dongle for the wired card right now, so I am trying to use the wireless card. I am able to find the network I want to connect to, and type in the password since the network is secured. It tries to connect but then pops up again asking for the password (I know it is correct). Is this card supported by linux/compatible? I tried finding drivers online but the sites that had drivers were down.

Just installed Fedora 14 from the Live CD i686 on my Dell Inspiron 1521. I can't connect to the SpeedTouch 585 on either wireless broadcom card or the wired Ethernet card.
I can connect to it from the same Laptop on the Vista which is on dual boot on the same laptop.
Further confusing is that I ran Fedora 14 and connected to another SpeedTouch today.
Already checked the Channel on the wireless nic and it's on the same one as the SpeedTouch.

I have loded centos 5 on vertual machine, my host machine is windows xp and has two NIC cards working perfectly well
1) realtek RTL 8139 family PCI fast eathernet NIC
2) realtek 8169/8110 family gigabite ethernet NIC ( ONBOARD)
but both of them are not getting detected by CENTOS

I'm trying to get my friend's laptop(acer travelmate 2200) to connect to his wireless network. I just installed a new hard drive and installed a dual boot windows xp/ Ubuntu 9.04 setup.
His laptop still connects fine with the old hard drive with windows XP installed, so I know the hardware is working.
When I click on the network manager , however, I don't see anything. Normally , I'd just hit the network manager and I'd see the available connections , but on this laptop I'm not detecting any.
The only thing I can think of , is that Ubuntu doesn't have the proper drivers needed for the wireless card in the laptop. But I don't know how to go about checking this since whenever I've done this before it's always just worked automatically.

Even thought my Westel Model 7500 has the appropriate green lines (Power, Wireless, DSL, Internet), it always takes my Ubuntu 9.04, Dell Inspiron 1545n considerable effort to connect to the wireless network. Please note that I am using WPA security and MAC filtering.Below is the series of events, spanning about 10 minutes every time I boot up the laptop.1. Tries to connect wirelessly automatically.2. I have no internet connection. I am running dual boot windows XP and ubuntu. The card works fine in windows, but doesn't work at all in Ubuntu. This is the card I am using Realtek rtl8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet Nic. I am using Ubuntu 8.10, codename intrepid. I hate windows because of the viruses I contract everyday, so I decided to use Ubuntu, but this does no good without networking. so I can get online. What I do now? It is an onboard LAN card, cable is plugged in a green light is on, ubuntu just doesn't recognize it.

Ok, so I upgraded my acer aspire one to the new Ubuntu 10, and at first everything was working fine, except the audio. Now, for some reason, my wireless and ethernet ports have died. I can't get online by either method. I can do ifconfig <device> up and it will show up if i do iwconfig or ifconfig, but the wireless isn't associated with the AP. Currently I'm trying to load some drivers for my atheros card, and we'll see how that works outReally I was wondering, how come the modules don't load at boot time, and how can I fix this? I have a strange problem regarding the connection to a LAN. I have a asus eeepc 1000H with Ubuntu netbook remix 9.10 (dual boot with WinXp). I've discovered two days ago that one of the pins from the ethernet port is pushed inside. This led to the fact that my netbook is not capable to deal with some UTP cables in the sense that it won't connect at the network through this cables. These cables work perfectly for any other computer.This is true for XP - for Ubuntu I found that it is not possible at all to connect through any cable at a LAN. There is an exception to that - my internet connection at home is done through PPPOE and I am able to access the internet through Ubuntu and WinXp.
Asus Romania won't honor the warranty (in their opinion I abused the product and it is my fault - fair enough - it is my fault since I am the single owner of the product - and I am connecting it in various locations to various ethernet cables) and in order to fix it they told me they will need to change the entire motherboard - which I guess it will cost me a price close to the price of the netbook itself - and I don't want to pay that much just for a pushed inside pin. (I wrote these to avoid questions regarding the warranty).I can live with the fact that some of the ethernet/UTP cables won't work with my netbook - but I can't live with the fact that the Ubuntu OS is not capable to connect to the internet through the ethernet port in any other locations besides my home. I require help in order to establish if there is something wrong with the Ubuntu ethernet settings or the Ubuntu OS is not capable to connect to internet through the faulty ethernet port (WinXp can).

I bought Sony vivo c series laptop and I tried to install ubuntu 10.10 version on it.After installed ubuntu the ethernet device was not activated. But It's working fine with wireless network. Similar problem I faced with older version 10.04 also.
Then, I tried with newer version 11.04. It detected Ethernet device.After installation over I just rebooted and I have chosen ubuntu OS, then it stuck and goes to blank screen.I am doing all my work in ubuntu only, i am struggling to recover form this problem for a long time.

I'm having network problems and I have no idea how to fix it. At first, my internet connection was suffering on all computers on my network (Mac, Windows and Ubuntu 11,04). So, I disconnected my cable-modem and then reconnected. Nothing.... So, I rebooted my Windows machine and the internet came back on that computer.
I then went to my Ubuntu computer and clicked on "auto eth0" (per the way I interpreted instructions from the internet). The symbol turned from the "two arrows" to what looks like a wireless, looking for a signal. I thought that maybe I should just reboot, as I did with Windows. However, when I did reboot, that same wireless symbol was there, then a message came up saying:

I can't seem to get my internet connection back on my Ubuntu computer, though it is working on every other computer on my network.

i installed linux at home on my laptop (dv2000, hp). Because i was having problems connecting to the internet through wireless. And wired at friends houses.So installed linux. Wireless took me a while but finally got that working. Now the problem i have is that wired is not working apart from at home. Any other router apart from mine it cannot connect to.

I'm really in newbie category, and not comfortable with computer or internet jargon. I can still connect with ubuntu 8.04 and firefox, just once daily. In a later post I also added: In Ubuntu 8.04 there was a system> admin> network tab (missing in 10.04). In the connections tab "wired" was checked. The general tab had my computer name (tsq-laptop) for host, and a blank box for domain name. The DNS tab had 192.168.1.1 in the servers box (presumably my service provider BSNL), and nothing in search domains. The hosts tab had a list of IP addresses and aliases, the first few being:
127.0.0.1 - local host
127.0.1.1 - tsq-laptop
::1 - ip6 local host ip6 loopback
fe00:: - ip6 localnet, .... (and a few more such I think most (or all) of these entries were generated automatically by the system, since I don't understand the jargon at all! I don't recall having any difficulties then, some two years back.Before that I had major problems in using the internal modem for a dial-up connection, but got detailed help by e-mail/internet from some really knowledgeable people in Europe and elsewhere regarding linmodem configuration, which I followed blindly and it worked!
In 10.04 there is only the taskbar icon to edit settings, and it has a different structure. It asks for MAC address (example 00.11.22.33.44.55). Other info required is IPv4 settings, DHCP client ID, about routers and other stuff. There may be other system settings to be made, which I can try with proper guidance. The ubuntu help page gives very sketchy information, and the images are not clear at all. No response to that till second day. Subsequently: In the 'wired' tab the 'routes' button popped a table where I entered address as 127.0.0.1, and netmask as 255.0.0.0, leaving gateway and metric blank. This is all geek stuff for me - I'm an old-fashioned engineer from the slide-rule era!
