does anyone know the best way to encrypt an entire HD with both Fedora and Windows 7 on it already? At the very least I would want to encrypt the Linux partition, as that has the most sensitive stuff on it.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI setup the hostname for my linux machine to Linux. If I try ping Linux from the same computer it works. If I try from another computer inside my network the host can not be resolved. If I ping the IP from another computer it works.
I take a look in my router at DHCP client list and my linux machine doesn't have the Hostname set up.
How to broadcast the hostname to the entire network?
Well when I first installed fedora 15 my wireless internet was working fine, and then out of the blue the option to select a wireless network wont show up.
Im sorry to be one of those people who register and there first post is a question, but since fedora 15 is new I couldnt find any information on my issue.
So basically, If I go into Network Settings I have two choices in the left hand tab. Wired, and Network proxy. Yesterday I also had wireless, Since the issue I have updated everything but still have no luck.
I am having this issue on a emachine em350 netbook, I am unable to post a link to it as I get a error since im new and not allowed to post links.
I installed Fedora 14 alongside windows, overwriting my old Ubuntu 10 partition. Unfortunately, now the GRUB loader only recognizes my Fedora partition and the built-in windows recovery utility partition. I checked the disc utility and my windows partition still definitely exists, I just can't seem to boot into it.
View 7 Replies View RelatedIve been using fedora 11 fora few months now and suddenly today after I booted up fedora network authentication(the little icon that lets me choose wifi networks) isnt showing up in the upper right hand corner which isnt that big of a problem but the fact that its on start up applications and its not wondering is what Im wondering about but on top of that my internet doesnt work at all.It will work for a little bit after boot then die and when I go to network authentication and network manager no wifi networks show up and I have about 5 around my house not including my own which is also what ive been wondering.
View 7 Replies View Relateda Toshiba L650 laptop, and installed F13 x86-64 on a disk partition using install DVD. The wired ethernet on this is Atheros AR8152, and the Wireless is Broadcomm 4313. Both these devices are not supported by default. So, as per instructions on the Linux Wireless site, and some guidance on this forum, have downloaded the Broadcomm driver tar on another machine, copied it onto the Toshiba laptop using a USB device, and then extracted, and ran the b43-fwcutter. The subdirectory /lib/firmware/b43 is created and has approx 3 dozen files. However, the Broadcomm driver is not showing up as an option in the Network Manager (system-config-network) or in the lsmod command output. I tried to manually add it by doing modprobe b43 command - it then begins to appear in the lsmod, but the option to add the Broadcomm wireless driver during a "New wireless Hardware" is not appearing still. I think, at an abstract level, I need to somehow "tell" the system to add the Broadcomm driver - am just not sure how to do so. On the other hand, the Atheros AR8152 has no driver as of now, so the wired Ethernet is also not connecting. how I can download all the required files on a different machine, and then install it on the Toshiba laptop?

I was able to go to command line, and do an "ifup ifcfg-eth0" and DHCP got an address. Go into GNOME - System-Administration - Network , or system-config-network the "Activate/Deactivate" is greyed out. Also, GNOME - System-Administration - Network Device Control show NO device..

My Ubuntu 9.10 is intalled on a partition on my computer HDD. The other partition OS is Windows XP. My Windows uses McAfee as the antiviral program. Granted that linux is at a much less risk for viruses, some still apparently can slide through on incoming emails from Windows computers.
1) Will my Windows partition McAfee protect the entire computer?
2) If not, suggestions for an anti-viral program?
I can't see any of my devices showing up in network manager to configure even though they're using dhcp and working. How do I get them in so I can configure a proxy?

sda1 - Fedora
sda2 - windows xp
sda3 - win 7
sda4 - ubuntu
I know how to mount each partition, but what I want is to mount sda, not sda1 or sda3. Just sda.So later, I want to make a copy of MBR of sda.As I know first 512 bytes from sda1 are not the same like first 512 bytes from sda.Thats why I want to mount sda and with dd, copy the first 512 bytes.The problem is how to mount sda, if some partition are ntfs and other are ext3?
is there a way to actually download the entire fedora repo? i've a friend with dialup who cannot install big things and i want to just downlaod the repository for him. i know ubuntu has some sort of way of doing this. i tried the following:

I recently installed Fedora 14 on an old computer which was already a dual boot Windows XP/Ubuntu machine. As there weren't many problems I felt encouraged to install it on a newer dual boot (Windows 7/Ubuntu 10.10) machine. Apart from a lot of bother with the wiFi card, all appeared to be well. However, I decided to boot into Ubuntu to make sure that it worked as before and was disagreeably surprised to get a message saying that Ubuntu only had 12.5 Mb disc space left when previously it was installed on an 80 Gb hard drive.
I have had a look at the drive, using gparted and found that there are two ext4 file systems, one on /dev/sdb1 and one on /dev/sdb3 which have used 2.93 Gb and 500 mb respectively. /dev/sdb4 has an exclamation mark (!) beside it and is lvm2 and occupies 68.15 Gb and appears to be unused.
Would it be possible to shrink this lvm2 file system and expand the one that contains Ubuntu. If so, how can I identify where Ubuntu is located? there is also /dev/sdb2 which is an extended partition of 2.93 Gb as well as /dev/sdb5 which is a Linux swap of 2.93 Gb

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just tried installing Fedora 12 and at the beggining of the install i got this message about my disk which cannot be read until it is initialized, and if i initialize it all data on the disk will be lost. Disk was formated using GUID, and had one HFS+ partition on it. I accidentaly clicked "yes" on that error message, and after realising what I just did (some 2sec later) i pulled out my computer's power cord out.
Now my entire disk is erased, it has no partitions on it, and all data is lost...
How do i retrieve my data from the erased disk, and why did Fedora want to do this to my disk?
I had no problems installing the F13 DVD, but when I chose to install it across a 160 GB and 250 GB hard drives, it happily used both of them for the system and left me 40 GB of storage to play with.... at least I think that is what happened. I kind of had the opposite in mind. I know I could have installed it on one and used the other drive for a separate storage location, but for me, it's just easier to have one big storage/system volume and not have to worry about paths and /dev/sdb/images stuff

(We have multiple Windows machines on my network, all in the same workgroup.) I also recently bought Avast anti-virus, and I think I have enabled the IP range of all computers to enable communication. I wonder if a media router has different needs than just the regular router I used to use. My samba file is minimal, I will post an example. I wish my Windows computer to access a drive marked /terminal on my linux box. I have a drive on my Windows marked E:Cher on my Vista box. My workgroup name is BRCR.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was foolishly messing around with Grub trying to get it so it only show my two most recent kernel versions of Ubuntu and Windows 7. The tutorials on how to do this were not clear, so I deemed it not a big deal and ultimately didn't end up making any changes. However when I restarted to boot into Windows 7 it was gone for Grub's boot list. I looked at the grub.cfg file and in it under os-prober, where i'm assuming Windows 7 should be there was only Vista (which wouldn't boot when I tried it, just a black screen). I had upgraded from Vista over the internet when Windows 7 first came out, then installed Ubuntu and it worked fine until this. I am using 64-bit Ubuntu 9.10, and have Grub 1.97 beta~4 installed, which was installed with Ubunutu.
