Ubuntu :: Where In Stages Supposed To Appear Exactly - Fix Flickers?
May 3, 2010
did a fresh install of 10.04 on the wife's laptop. But the visual feedback of the booting process in kind of weird. Here is what I experience: This is on a laptop with intel graphics card. cat /proc/fb prints inteldrm. Which one of these is 'Plymouth' or where in the above stages is it supposed to appear exactly? Isn't Plymouth supposed to give me a flicker-free booting experience from Grub - to - Desktop, atleast on Intel-based computers? How do I fix these flickers? I tried the FRAMEBUFFER=y fix and it only eliminated the blinking cursor but I still see the screen going black and flicker.

We've just set up 3 Dell systems with 64 bit Red Hat Enterprise Workstation 5. As part of our system configuration we point the user authentication to our LDAP server, and automount people's home directories from our fileserver. At this point, our security people do some configuration and we get it back.
We are typically running KDE. On all three machines, when you plug a USB stick into the system, the familiar window pops up asking you what you want to do - open the contents in some program, open a file viewer, etc. and the stick shows up in /media When you stick a CD or DVD into the drive nothing happens - you don't get the options window and nothing appears in /media I'm trying to get an idea of how the automount process works, and where I may have stepped on it. We've got three more identical machines that haven't been installed yet, so my plan is to check the ability to automount CDs at various stages of our setup process.

See screenshot attachment. I know there was going to be changes to GNOMES appearance, but I thought it was just moving Close/Maximize/Minimize to the other side. If the screenshot is correct I'll just adapt and move on, if not how do I fix it?

Has anyone had success with integration of Gwibber and Flickr and if you did how did you do it? The actual text I tried adding my flickr account to Gwibber in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx and in the end I am not sure if it works or not. There is a documented bug related to Gwibber and Flickr. [URL] Now I did check my screen name (which is naggobot) and I used that and also every other id I could imagine, including direct http link
[URL]
and yahoo email address that is tied to Flickr account. In the end I did manage to get some input to the Gwibber window from the Flickr account but that input was from photo stream of a contact of mine. So my question is has anyone had success of getting their photostream from Flickr to Gwibber? If you succeeded in this how did you do it i.e. what did you fill in to the user name field? Please be super accurate.

I've upgraded to Kubuntu 10.10 but there is nothing in my system tray popping up telling me there are packages to upgrade (there are 83 btw!). What should be running? In control panel->software management->settings I can see I have "notify when updates are available" ticked, but I've not been notified of anything. What can I check or install to sort this out?

I have installed Vlc Media Player ... I use fedora14 when I want to run it, it says "VLC is not supposed to be run as root. Sorry. If you need to use real-time priorities and/or privileged TCP ports you can use vlc-wrapper (make sure it is Set-UID root and cannot be run by non-trusted users first)."
I found something that said: " configure --enable-run-as-root "
But this is my question that now that I have installed Vlc, what should I do? where should I do the configuration?

I have a script that takes a location and does something to them then creates new files in the supplied location. I was trying to get the script to create the location if it didn't exist, but i can't figure out why it won't work. Here's what i've got right now
Code:
#!/bin/bash
destdir=$1
[[ -z "$destdir" ]] && { echo "No destination parameter supplied, exiting"; exit 1; }
[[ ! -e "$destdir" ]] && { echo "$destdir does not exist, exiting"; exit 1; }
[code]....
when i run the first one, it works if the supplied folder exists. If i try with my modification with a name such as /media/place/Foo bar, it creates a folder called Foo in the supplied dir, and bar in the dir i'm in when i run the script. the -p flag on mkdir creates parent directories btw.

In System Monitor, under the "System" tab, my Processor and RAM is listed (including specs for each of these), but my Intel graphics card (4500) is not listed at all? I am experiencing some periodic screen flicker - could it be that the video card is not detected?

I have been (in retrospect) screwing around with drivers and various packages in Synaptics on a Fujitsu Siemens ESPRIMO Mobile, which has a SiS graphic card. Now I get a normal boot up until about 5 seconds after the Ubuntu-mark shows up in the middle of the screen. After that the screen flickers and goes on and off, without any results. This just continues forever, without any solution. I have tried the recovery mode, and tried to remember which packages I installed, and then tried to remove them, without success. Any tips on what to do, except reinstall?

I have received the ZaReason Teo netbook I have bought, all specs are here:I have had it for 3 days now and haven't really played around with it very much: I have installed a few apps (skype, synergy, dropbox, texlive) and I've been basically getting acquainted, and I'm generally satisfied. A couple of hours ago I came back from the office, turned on the computer again and.. gnome started to flicker in an impossible loop! In one second, it will go completely white, then I'll see the purple Ubuntu background, then the application bar on the top and then white again. I see for a tenth of a second two suspicious arrows in the top left corner.
I have taken pics and made a sequence of the loop to help you guys understand:this happens immediately after login. when it loads, as in when you get "Ubuntu" and the 5 bullet points below, it doesn't flicker.While the screen loops in the sequence, i can open a terminal (using Gnome DO) and do stuff. I have tried to stop GDM, using "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop"What I then get is a command line interface where I can type something, but if I press ENTER nothing happens, it just goes to the next line. To restart the thing I need to press the power button off and on again. Here's the image of where I get. When I restart, it starts to loop again. I don't know what to do. While it loops I can enter commands in a terminal (thanks Gnome DO). I removed synergy but it didn't help either. As per now, it's really difficult and slow to interact with the machine, this really make it useless for anything I'd like to do with it.

I don't mean this to be in any way a critical post but I've recently switched to Debian from numerious other distros because of it elidged stability and speed. However I'm using the stable version and frequently have to reboot for certain things to work and frequently multimedia based programs crash on me. I've installed the repo from debian-multimedia.org so I don't know if that's causeing any problems. It crashes on me multiple times a day. Now it's not the OS itself which is the problem I'm sure but more the software in the repos. However it was my udnerstanding that this software was pretty darn well tested.

I'm finding the NetworkManager applet very confusing.When I start up at a new location I can use the "Connect to Other Network..." menu item to bring up the list of available networks, and I'd expect that by selecting one of these and clicking "Connect", then configuring and clicking OK, I'd get a connection. Instead the dialog just goes away and nothing else happens. Is something broken with NetworkManager, or am I misunderstanding how this is supposed to work?
By switching back and forth between NetworkManager and ifup I'm eventually able to establish a connection to a new access point, but it's been a painful process.I've also encountered a problem reported by others, where when my system fails to suspend/resume properly the /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state has NetworkingEnabled=false and I need to manually edit this before restarting networking... but that's a separate issue, and I can work around it with the manual edit (or just add a startup script to do this automatically).

I am a total beginner to ubuntu. I have installed ubuntu 10.04 desktop edition with a CD on my laptop as only OS. So far (three weeks) ubuntu has convinced me. However, my screen starts flickering regularly after a while (even when the computer is idle) and the only solution so far has been to suspend/shut down. The flickering makes the computer unusable and doesn't stop if not shut down/suspended. Beside this issue the graphic seems to work fine.
My Computer is an ASUS F3J, the video card is a ATI Radeon X1700. 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M66-P [Mobility Radeon X1700] this is the xorg0.log:
Code:
X.Org X Server 1.7.6
Release Date: 2010-03-17
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.24-27-server i686 Ubuntu

It has a button next to the power to show the wireless status, on or off. If I turn the laptop on with the wireless active, it keeps flickering between on and off states, and gives me a really slow connection.It happened in 10.04 if I booted with the wireless activated, but could be fixed by resetting the wireless. Now in 10.10, it happens constantly, and I just wont stop.My laptop is a CompaQ Altec Lansing running 64 bit.

I am trying to get Ubuntu to boot from a usb, and failing.
I have a two year old Acaer Aspire 5735Z with Windows Vista as the OS. This has USB as a possible boot source, now of course at the top of the list.
I downloaded 10.10 and installed on an empty 8 GB Kingston drive as guided. There is just under 4 GB on the drive. The drive had been used before and all deleted.
So at start up the first thing that happens is the led on the USB drive flickers for less than one second, and then the Windows boots.
How can I know that a boot sector is installed ?

I recently switched to a setup in my living room where a CPU is hooked to a big Toshiba 1080p TV through an HDMI cable. We had to buy a new video card to make it work - a nvidia GeForce 210 with an HDMI out.The problem has been that when I fullscreen a browser on the TV (Chrome OR Firefox), the TV will suddenly lose its signal, flicker, then come back again. If I try and watch a ..... video, it starts to happen more and more quickly.It doesn't do this at all when I watch a movie on VLC. My guess is that it's a driver issue with the new video card - we never actually installed anything to update the drivers, just plugged it in and it started up.

I'm just coming from Ubuntu(don't hate me) and realized that there are no Nvidia drivers in the repos. I had trouble even getting the repos to respond on the live cd or after installation; is opensuse having network problems? I changed the repositories to the GA tech libraries because they are closer and now they work, However I can't get any Nvidia drivers to install. Now, I'm not a super linux guru that can fly around linux like super man, but I'm also not a newbie to linux. Or at least I think I'm not.
I need to get Nvidia drivers installed...what is the easiest way to do that, considering the URL... repo doesn't seem to want to connect either.I don't know what the deal is, but Internet is rather clumsy with opensuse or with KDE, I'm not sure yet.
