Red Hat :: RHE WS 5 USB Sticks - Check The Ability To Automount CDs At Various Stages Of Setup Process

Oct 4, 2010

We've just set up 3 Dell systems with 64 bit Red Hat Enterprise Workstation 5. As part of our system configuration we point the user authentication to our LDAP server, and automount people's home directories from our fileserver. At this point, our security people do some configuration and we get it back.

We are typically running KDE. On all three machines, when you plug a USB stick into the system, the familiar window pops up asking you what you want to do - open the contents in some program, open a file viewer, etc. and the stick shows up in /media When you stick a CD or DVD into the drive nothing happens - you don't get the options window and nothing appears in /media I'm trying to get an idea of how the automount process works, and where I may have stepped on it. We've got three more identical machines that haven't been installed yet, so my plan is to check the ability to automount CDs at various stages of our setup process.

Ubuntu :: Automount Stopped Working (digital Cameras, Usb Sticks)?

Oct 24, 2010

I'm running ubuntu 10.04 and suddenly when plugging my cameras or usb sticks, they don't automount anymore, but they did before. What changed is last days I tried to build and install nautilus-sendto manually from source, and it required dependencies including GTK+3.0 (unstable), I don't know what happened exactly or if my system is broken, because some of this packages built and installed fine and others failed. If someone wants to help with that to get my installation to its original state it would be awesome.I could mount my usb stick installing usbmount, it worked, but I didn't need this before.What I want now is to mount my cameras: here is the output for:

Code:
lsusb
gvfs-mount -l

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Software / Process Used For Automount Of DVD?

Feb 12, 2011

I'm running CentOS-plus V5.5.CDs automount fine, but DVDs don't. I can, however, mount DVDs manually.I have scoured the web without seeing a solution. Its also clear that the software or process used by the OS to automount a DVD, has changed in the last few CentOS versions. So now I would like to ask:,In V5.5, what is the current process or software used by the OS for automatically mounting media such as a CD or DVD?What configuration files are involved that allow a CD to be mounted, and what entry(ies) would be needed to automount a DVD?

Ubuntu :: Where In Stages Supposed To Appear Exactly - Fix Flickers?

May 3, 2010

did a fresh install of 10.04 on the wife's laptop. But the visual feedback of the booting process in kind of weird. Here is what I experience: This is on a laptop with intel graphics card. cat /proc/fb prints inteldrm. Which one of these is 'Plymouth' or where in the above stages is it supposed to appear exactly? Isn't Plymouth supposed to give me a flicker-free booting experience from Grub - to - Desktop, atleast on Intel-based computers? How do I fix these flickers? I tried the FRAMEBUFFER=y fix and it only eliminated the blinking cursor but I still see the screen going black and flicker.

Ubuntu :: Setup Two External Hard Drives To Automount In Fstab

Sep 10, 2010

I have set up two external hard drives to automount in fstab with the following lines:

/dev/sdb1 /media/DownstairsBackup ntfs-3g rw,auto,user,exec,sync 0 0
/dev/sda1 /media/UpstairsBackup ntfs-3g rw,auto,user,exec,sync 0 0

And right after I restart, all users have permission to read and write, and everything is fine. However, I have an automated backup utility (BackinTime) installed to back up particular (mounted network) directories every night, but whenever I check up on it the next day, I get the error "Unable to mount ..... Authorization required". (These network directories are mounted into the local filesystem in fstab as well.) Oddly enough, if I run BackinTime by hand as the users, it works fine. I'm running 10.04 LTS.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Check Video Card Broken - Is It Just Setup?

Aug 14, 2010

I have a GeForce 8600M GS card in a Dell Vostro 1710, which has appeared to be playing up lately, but I'm unsure whether it's the hardware itself or have I not properly set things up.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed with compiz, and 'rotate cube' enabled. The 'deformation' is set to cylinder. I recently tried using rss-glx (really slick screensaver) when the slow-down and screen freezes happened.

The symptoms:

Odd behaviour begins after attempting to log in after the screensaver has blanked the screen, i.e. screensaver ran for a while then the screen blanked. When logged back in, a 'cylinder' rotate freezes and the screen does not refresh. Clicking around the screen refreshes it somewhat. Switching between screens becomes next to impossible and a restart is required.

In general rotating the cube is OK, rotating the cylinder seems a task on the video card and rotating the sphere is horribly slow.

Things done so far:

Each time I log in, I need to open the NVidia settings and change the powermizer to 'prefer maximum performance'. On next reboot I will try this in xorg.conf code...

My questions are:
- How can I verify the card is working correctly, enough to be able to decide whether it's hardware or software at fault?
- If the hardware is proven to be OK, what am I then leaving out?

Applications :: TCPdump Setup To Automatically Start Process Again

Jul 1, 2010

We are having a Linux box with Tcpdump continuously running on it to monitor bunch of sources. Separate Tcpdump process runs in a background for each host for monitoring traffic. I use -w option with it to save the capture in the pcap format to analyze it later. Now what I need is, if the Linux machine gets rebooted amidst of its packet capturing activity, I want tcpdump to automatically start the process again for every host without overwriting previous captures.

Remember: Without overwriting previous captures . . .
Basically, I will be keeping all the tcpdump commands in the shell script and will load the script at startup during the linux boot. Is there any way to achieve this case, where by on rebooting, Tcpdump does not overwrite previous captures?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Setup Process Not Detecting Hard Drives?

Apr 30, 2010

I'm trying to make a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 on my system. I have 9.10 correctly setup on what I see here as devsda2. devsda3 does contain /home. devsda1 is for Vista. They are on a 500Gb hard drive. I also have a second 500Gb hard drive, formerly on a raid 0 with the first one, but now independent (raid deactivated from bios). It is here know as /dev/sdb, and contains other 3 partitions. Raid 0 is not hardware, but is an intel fake raid.

I then have other 4 drives, causing me NO problem.

I start live mode of Ubuntu 10.04 with noraid option. When I try to setup Ubuntu, during the process, where it comes to manually select partitions, the two 500Gb hard drives disappears, such that I'm not able to install Ubuntu on what now is /dev/sda2

If I start live mode of Ubuntu without noraid option, I will see the two 500Gb hd as being part of a raid 0, such that I can't use them.

The other 4 hd normally appear in both cases.

Networking :: RSA Key Authentication And Ssh - Process To Setup Keys To Go From SVNServer To ProdServer

Feb 1, 2011

I have two Linux machines, SVNServer and ProdServer. I would like to use RSA key authentication so that I can log into either one of them from the other. I have no problem setting up key authentication that goes ProdServer --> SVNServer. However when I follow the same process to setup keys to go from SVNServer to ProdServer I have trouble.

A summary of what I did:
$ ssh-keygen -t rsa (i accepted all defaults)
$ scp .ssh/id_rsa.pub lynchs@ProdServer:./tempkey
** on prodserver $cat tempkey >> .ssh/authorized_keys
$ ssh lynchs@ProdServer

No luck! It still prompts me for my password! Not sure if it is related but there is a third machine, again I can use key authentication to connect to SVNServer without a problem, but key authenication does not work when connecting to ProdServer.
