OpenSUSE :: Switch Desktop Environment From LXDE To XFCE?
Nov 13, 2010I have a laptop that is a little bit older, and OpenSUSE was running pretty heavy on it with the KDE and Gnome desktops (I installed Gnome, tried it for bit, then wiped it and did a clean install with KDE).
Since it was so sluggish on that laptop, I grabbed a couple live CD's of OpenSUSE with the LXDE and XFCE desktop environments. The XFCE disc doesn't seem to boot at all, which I tried in a couple different computers, and on Virtualbox with the same result.
LXDE worked fine and I installed it just fine, with hopes of switching over to XFCE later, as I like it better. This brings me to my question, can someone tell me what the easiest way is to switch from the LXDE desktop to XFCE?

I went there, I clicked on 11.3 on the right hand side, and then clicked on the 1-click install option for X11fce, the first option. It opens the YaST software manager and I followed the prompts, and it finished. All of the packages were installed, except XDM.
I was expecting that the software would install and configure the desktop, and I'd reboot to see an XFCE login. This was not the case.
what the correct, and safe way would be to switch desktops?

Dec 8, 2010I recently installed Ubuntu yesterday and finally got all the settings right so that it would run rather decently on my computer. I have rather limited RAM resource, 192MB to be exact and i would have preferred to have installed Xubuntu from the start, but kept getting errors when using Wubi in Windows XP.
So here i am, with Ubuntu 10.04, wanting to upgrade to Xubuntu 10.10....but not knowing what to do. I'm currently installing the desktop environment for Xubuntu via the Software Manager but I'm not sure if this is what I'm supposed to do..

Aug 12, 2011is it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

Oct 9, 2010on an old Dell Latitude 110L laptop is have installed OpenSuse 11.3, using the LXDE desktop. It's amazing how fast it is. I have tried Gnome on it, KDE and also XFCE but I really must say LXDE wins big time.I do have one question though: how can I share folders so it is possible to have this desktop in my home network and share files between the computers?

Aug 1, 2011The first issue is adding launch icons to the task bar. I can add launchers, but cannot figure out how to link them to applications. It is only half a problem, because putting links on the desktop is easy, but I prefer having launchers on the task bar so the desktop is not cluttered.The big problem is placement of desktop icons. I like to put icons on the right side of the screen, and more importantly, I like to group related icons. For example, if I had a folder or document for Linux and another for Debian, I want them grouped together. I also like arranging by category: folders in one column, documents and images in another and launchers (if any) in a third. However, if there is way to enable desktop icons to be moved, I cannot figure it out. Icons are fixed on the left side of the screen with folders first in alphabetical order, then documents/images in alphabetical or numerical order, and launch icons last.My guess is icons can be moved, but I am not computer literate enough to figure it out. It does not make sense that the task bar can be placed on the top, bottom, left or right, but desktop icons cannot be moved. I have tried every preference setting, but there are no relevant options.Am I over-looking something that is not obvious or is it a strange deficiency with LXDE?

After a reboot, I no longer have desktop icons and I'm seeing the default Fedora wallpaper. Also, if I right-click on the desktop, I get a standard openbox menu instead of the LXDE one.
I would like to get my old desktop back.

Ubuntu :: Xubuntu Mounted Drives On Desktop?
Jul 27, 2010I have installed Xubuntu on an old laptop which has a floppy disk.
On the desktop where mounted drives will normally appear, it constantly shows the floppy disk on the desktop even though there is not floppy inside, so I have disabled the desktop from showing mounted drives, however now anything else like a CD or USB drive will not show up on the desktop. Is there a way to choose what types of devices are shown on the desktop?
I have considered disabling the floppy from the BIOS(assuming that is possible), but I would rather not go down that road just yet.

Added the restricted driver module that I needed Nvidia, added the Compiz settings manager, but I cant seem to find a way to enable desktop effects. I realize that Xubuntu uses the XFCE window manger which is sort of light weight compared to Gnome or KDE, so I am asking if anyone has managed to get the desktop effects running in a similar environment. I checked and observed that the nvidia module has been loaded.

Mar 10, 2011I installed Xubuntu 10.10, fresh i don't configure or installed another program, i only installed nvidia drivers (I have a Geforce 9600 GT video card). The entire operating system, and xfce 4.6 was working fine. After, I make an upgrade to xfce 4.8, and when i loged on, everything loaded ok: xfce 4.8 version is working fine, the panels loaded and i can add items.
But there is a problem: My wallpaper image doesn't appear on desktop (only brown solid color), it doesn't show icons, i can't change wallaper in configuration panel (i can add an image but it does not appear in desktop), when I plug in a pendrive usb icon does no appear. And when I right click on the deadspace on the background the right click menu does not come up.
When i open desktop folder in thunar there is information, but icon files does not appear in desktop I thing that maybe is a setting that i can solve typing something in terminal, but i don't know what, i searched in google and in this forum and i found only one post but not related to xfce 4.8 and it was not useful[URL]...
