On Xubuntu I installed Ubuntu-desktop via Synaptic, and then did

Reboot, logout, restart... nothing works like expected; I still get into Xubuntu each time. What did I do wrong or which step did I miss?
I recently installed Xubuntu (9.10) in my computer, but... I have been having intermitent hard disk problems, and so I decided to google a little and after reading this:

I did use Synaptic to search for smartmontools and then install it.
Synaptic complained that it couldn't autenticate the packet, but I figured this was happening because... this is not an application supported by Canonical? I clicked and installed the packet (well, in fact, I *think* it has installed two applications, not just one).
Then later, I saw one of those arrows at the top right of the screen, and clicked it to install updates. Synaptic told me to update SUDO. Hmm... serious. And then even more: it told me that it couldn't autenticate it I stopped the installation and registered at these forums.
And more: before posting, I tried to reproduce the "error" (and again, stop before installing the "suspicious" SUDO update) but Synaptic now autenticated it troubleless and installed it.
Well, now I have a LOT of questions:
1. Where do I place this post?. Security?. Hardware problems?. Update and installation? (Linux noobiness?)
2. my hard disk?. I've read somewhere that an application called "fsck"
3. What may have happened with Synaptic?. Why wouldn't it autenticate a SUDO update?
4. Have I done something wrong?. Something unrepairable?
5. Can I trust the SUDO version that now I have installed in my system?
6. How could I check what has Synaptic exactly installed?. Is there any log file anywhere in my system?
I recently installed Ubuntu yesterday and finally got all the settings right so that it would run rather decently on my computer. I have rather limited RAM resource, 192MB to be exact and i would have preferred to have installed Xubuntu from the start, but kept getting errors when using Wubi in Windows XP.
So here i am, with Ubuntu 10.04, wanting to upgrade to Xubuntu 10.10....but not knowing what to do. I'm currently installing the desktop environment for Xubuntu via the Software Manager but I'm not sure if this is what I'm supposed to do..
Is there a way to try out LXDE on my Xubuntu desktop and switch between the two? (Like you can with Gnome/KDE installed at the same time)

when I run synaptic I can open the list of apps. and select but then I apply to download and get "error we failed to fetch etc etc." Seems to be an rpm problem but not sure. ????

My opening questions are: Should I go with mini.iso or the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD (or the Ubuntu one)? If so, which one? What additional packages will I need to make the hardware accessible and fully functional? All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why?What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

post regarding a "Ubuntu-Desktop-Minimal"-type system.
i installed Xubuntu on my system having a dual boot with Xubuntu and windows xp but when i select to boot on Xubuntu it freezes and gets a message saying that the file hal.dll in system32 cant be found. Before showing me this message i tryed to uninstall the Xubuntu inside from windows xp because several problems showed up after installing Xubuntu. I can boot on windows xp but i cant boot to xubuntu and cant uninstall xubuntu.

I am using a Fling KVM switch (by Belkin), to connect 2 computers to my monitor One computer is running XP and the other is running Linux. My wireless switching mechanism has just gone the way of the saints but Belkin has supplied a software solution for this occurrence. There is a small app called Fling (surprising) that allows me to switch from the XP machine to the Linux machine but nothing to switch back to the XP. What I need to know is there a similar app for the Linux computer. (NB I have tried Synergy but have no idea how to set it up - I've been told that synergy might work).

Whenever I try to "Switch from [username]..." I get locked screen with the options to "Leave Message", "Switch User" or "Unlock".If I click to "Switch User" the password box just disappears (as if one tried to unlock with an incorrect password). Fed13 client system receives the IP address from dhcp, receives the loader, loads vmlinuz and initrd.img from tftp, load anaconda, configures the network and dev eth0, mounts nfs server to load kickstart file, loads kickstart file (language...) but when it tries to mount nfs server to install from Fedora 13 installation tree it fails.

Running Logical Volume Manager gui and attempting to extend the volume results in the same error.
Booting up fails with code 126. I am greeted with the following error everyime I start up.
Checking root file system.../etc/rcS.d/S10checkroot.sh: line 174: /sbin/logsave: Permission denied
failed (code 126).
It then says an automatic fsck failed and a manual fsck must be performed, then the system restarted. I have done a manual fsck and it did nothing. I booted up the system with knoppix and did it, nothing.
While rearranging my keyboard shortcuts in the control center, I noticed that in the Desktop Switching subcategory, there are "Switch to [Next/Previous/Left/Right] Desktop" and "Switch to Next Screen." What is the difference between switching to another desktop and switching to another screen?

Now my problem is that I've tried to run a .exe file with WINE. But Xubuntu gives the error that I can't run the file because it is not marked as a executable. Now I saw somewhere in the Ubuntu Documentation that you have to change the permissions with Properties>Permissions. But in Xubuntu I can' t make the file executable, as in Ubuntu.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an MSI netbook with a non-functioning version of Ubuntu (the GUI is GNOME, and currently not working) and I'm trying to replace that with xubuntu. For whatever reason, I cannot get the system to mount the USB key, which currently has nothing on it except for the xubuntu .iso file. My computer is encrypted with sda5_crypt, which comes up and demands a password just after the MSI boot screen. I assume I need to press some kind of key before the sda5_crypt screen, but I'm not sure which button that is. There is an option of pressing F11 for "boot menu", and from there I can select "flash card", but it doesn't do me any good to do that.

I'll try to give out as much details as possible but this issue is very troubling.
I used to work with maverick until the final natty xubuntu went online the other day.
So I'm now working with Xubuntu 11.04 amd64 Since i started working with it im experiencing on my PC a serious overheat causing the computer to shut itself down and to my LED screen on the mother board to report more then 100C degrees of the cpu... this never happened before, and after some testing i found out that i only happens in full screen opengl game (Enemy territory- shuts itself after 6 minutes) and full screen flash movie playing (such as mega video- shuts itselfs after 10-15 minutes). I don't use stock cooling im using a arctic freezer 64 pro. and i clean my computer and put new thermal grease every couple of months (i also did it again after the problem started).
now for the specs: I'll just add that the only other thing changed is the fglrx drivers which i now use the 11.4 catalyst.
