on an old Dell Latitude 110L laptop is have installed OpenSuse 11.3, using the LXDE desktop. It's amazing how fast it is. I have tried Gnome on it, KDE and also XFCE but I really must say LXDE wins big time.I do have one question though: how can I share folders so it is possible to have this desktop in my home network and share files between the computers?
View 2 RepliesI have a laptop that is a little bit older, and OpenSUSE was running pretty heavy on it with the KDE and Gnome desktops (I installed Gnome, tried it for bit, then wiped it and did a clean install with KDE).
Since it was so sluggish on that laptop, I grabbed a couple live CD's of OpenSUSE with the LXDE and XFCE desktop environments. The XFCE disc doesn't seem to boot at all, which I tried in a couple different computers, and on Virtualbox with the same result.
LXDE worked fine and I installed it just fine, with hopes of switching over to XFCE later, as I like it better. This brings me to my question, can someone tell me what the easiest way is to switch from the LXDE desktop to XFCE?

I went there, I clicked on 11.3 on the right hand side, and then clicked on the 1-click install option for X11fce, the first option. It opens the YaST software manager and I followed the prompts, and it finished. All of the packages were installed, except XDM.
I was expecting that the software would install and configure the desktop, and I'd reboot to see an XFCE login. This was not the case.
what the correct, and safe way would be to switch desktops?
i have a centos 5.4 without desktop environment. i can only access certain system settings via browser (and of course console). i would like to encrypt some folders. but these folders are used by the system. can i encrypt them? will the system still be able to access these folders? if yes, how can i encrypt only through console or is there something web based software for this?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and Samba 3.4. I've shared a folder and have accessed the share from a Windows 7 client. However, I've struggled to configure the share and folder so that the Win7 client can create files and/or folders in the share. Kept getting Permission Denied errors. Finally, (using Webmin) I set the permissions on the file folder so that "Other" had write access. I don't understand why this was necessary (and how unsecure this is). I already had the write access checkbox ticked for "User" but it wasn't enough.

It is wanting to lock the drive or various programs after being left unused for a few minutes, I have not found where I can disable this. I do not need passwords, really. I am the only user. I reinstalled it once, on top of itself (Ubuntu) and it worked fine briefly, then started doing it all again.
I use to sometimes install Ubuntu as a windows app. on a previous version, maybe 9.04 - 9.10, but think I can not do it on this version?
So, Can I install as WIndows app on this version of Ubuntu? CAn I install Ubuntu on one drive alone, and windows on the other drive alone, install both in same computer and get dual booting? I think before, to do that I had to reset boot drives in BIOS to whichever I had the OS I wanted to use?
Or MUST they be installed on same drive for dual booting to be available?
I am attaching screen shots of the messages I get, etc. I have tried to share files and folders, but it does not allow me to select Share this folder as some security thing is not installed, And the time I am required to enter password to use comp[iter after being idle a few minutes, seems to be tied to my folder, which is JOHN. I may have to think about removing Ubuntu from this drive, add a SATA drive and use two, one for Windows and one for Ubuntu.
I have openSUSE 11.2 installed with KDE4 and what is the proper way to install another desktop/window manager. Installing fluxbox is straight forward with zypper install fluxbox what about gnome and lxde? How will the default application be affected e.g. when I login into KDE, video is defaulted to smplayer If gnome/lxde is installed will the default app change with the desktop environment or will one app be defaulted to all desktop environment?

View 5 Replies View RelatedA couple of months ago, I upgraded from OpenSUSE 11.1 w/Gnome desktop to 11.2 w/KDE desktop. While I generally like the refinements of KDE, there is one aspect I absolutely detest, and that is the apparent inability to work with files and folders directly on the desktop as one does with Gnome or Windows or Mac OS.
While file manager applications like Dolphin have their uses,I generally find them to be cumbersome compared to being able to drag and drop files and launch applications directly from the desktop. In this respect, I feel as though I have reverted to the functional equivalent of Win 3.1. Is there a way to enable access to folders and files on the desktop in KDE or do I need to revert to Gnome?
The other day Home folder on desktop didn't work, I clicked on it and mouse icon would just load and load, but it didn't open it, i had to go to Menu -> Places -> Home to open it. I created my own shortcut to Home and didn't pay too much attention to it. But today I connected my phone via USB and folders mounted on desktop and I got the same behavior, when I click on it, the whole desktop icons disappear and reload but folder doesn't open. And when I go to network, the same thing happens. I recently reinstalled my openSuse, could it be that it took the settings or something from the old installation?

View 9 Replies View Relatedis it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

I have made a based ARM Debian system by using the debootstrap tool, and installed the LXDE Desktop System by using the follow commands.
apt-get update
apt-get install lxde
However, The LXDE Desktop System can't boot when i reboot. What can i do next ？

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Lucid 10.04 as my main system, which happily shares files/folders with other Ubuntu & Windows XP PC's around the house; but for the life of me I can't get Windows 7 (new Asus Notebook & older AMD Skt A PC) to share a thing with anything (unless all other PC's are running Win7 as well) - I have Win7 PC set as a workplace PC (not part of 'Home-group').
Also I can't remember how to change the Ubuntu network settings from default 'Workgroup' to my own group name.
I have been through a lot of sites and googled allmost everything to get an answer about sharing folders on a Ubuntu Server with Windows clients.
Every site tells me, that the only way to get from windows to the shared folders on a ubuntu server, is by using some extra software, installed on the windows machine.
Is this correct?
