View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop that is a little bit older, and OpenSUSE was running pretty heavy on it with the KDE and Gnome desktops (I installed Gnome, tried it for bit, then wiped it and did a clean install with KDE).
Since it was so sluggish on that laptop, I grabbed a couple live CD's of OpenSUSE with the LXDE and XFCE desktop environments. The XFCE disc doesn't seem to boot at all, which I tried in a couple different computers, and on Virtualbox with the same result.
LXDE worked fine and I installed it just fine, with hopes of switching over to XFCE later, as I like it better. This brings me to my question, can someone tell me what the easiest way is to switch from the LXDE desktop to XFCE?
I found a page in the OpenSUSE site that appears to be dedicated to XFCE, here is the link:
Xfce - openSUSE
I went there, I clicked on 11.3 on the right hand side, and then clicked on the 1-click install option for X11fce, the first option. It opens the YaST software manager and I followed the prompts, and it finished. All of the packages were installed, except XDM.
I was expecting that the software would install and configure the desktop, and I'd reboot to see an XFCE login. This was not the case.
what the correct, and safe way would be to switch desktops?
Lubuntu is nice - but it seems the LXDE version is not as up to date as Fedora LXDE Spin or even Debian squeeze with LXDE installed. I do like Chromium on Lubuntu though... its faster and a nice touch. I am looking for a lightweight 64-bit distribution for my main laptop (it is by no means "old" or "low spec" but I like that Lubuntu starts up in like 2 secs).
LXDE version seems not to be recent (esp in 10.04 version which seems to work more stably for me - with Nvidia drivers etc)64 bit install is currently a pain - requires first install of minimal CD or alternate CD both of which required wired Ethernet, then install of lubuntu from PPA. Native 64-bit support would be nice. Linux Mint LXDE, for example, is also only 32-bit.
I installed lxde, but my wireless internet doesn't work. I can switch back to gnome and it works perfectly. I tried wicd and manually connecting with the command line. Both fail while trying to get an ip.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using a Fling KVM switch (by Belkin), to connect 2 computers to my monitor One computer is running XP and the other is running Linux. My wireless switching mechanism has just gone the way of the saints but Belkin has supplied a software solution for this occurrence. There is a small app called Fling (surprising) that allows me to switch from the XP machine to the Linux machine but nothing to switch back to the XP. What I need to know is there a similar app for the Linux computer. (NB I have tried Synergy but have no idea how to set it up - I've been told that synergy might work).

Has anyone professionally tested Lubuntu vs Mint LXDE and Quelitu with respect to RAM usage. They are all distros using LXDE. It would be nice to have hard numbers in terms of speed.
View 4 Replies View RelatedCan anyone tell me if it is possible to change the color of the (decorated) title bar in LXDE (Mint Linux)? I can't find anything in the system to do this, or advice in google search.
Also when I right click and select "undecorate" I cannot retrieve the title bar unless I close the programme and open it again - is there any way around this?
I've got it to the point it will run when you login by adding a line to the /etc/xdg/lxsession/Lubuntu/autostart file. Added "synergyc 111.111.1.11" and it works perfect. So the main question is, how can I add that line somewhere, somehow to start on boot and not by login?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an older laptop (P4 Compaq Presario 2110; 512mb RAM) on which I installed Lubuntu 10.10. I am using a Buffalo wireless G PCMCIA card (Broadcom 43xx chip set) on the LXDE side which works perfectly. Out of curiosity I installed 'icewm' and 'openbox.' My wireless card shows when I check lspci as "UP." Using wicd, I can see networks, but my router will not resolve an IP address. NetworkManager does nothing.
I have tried using both ifconfig and iwconfig commands with no love.
Is this something inherent with lighter WMs and desktops? Is there a means to allow my router assign an IP and why would it be different for a different WM? Should the IP address be assigned to the computer?

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhich LXDE version of Linux has the newest version of Firefox and Open Office included?
I am looking for an iso file, and I am trying to run this off of a live CD for now. So I want a light version of Linux, probably LXDE, or if not, then probably XFCE. But I need a new version of Firefox and OpenOffice included.
Because, I tried burning the customizable NimbleX @ custom.nimblex.net . Pretty good, except it uses Firefox 2, and Open Office 2.3, which are outdated.
And I tried Mint XFCE, which might have been pretty good too, but it had some issue of blanking and requiring relogin after I opened hotmail frequently (user id: mint, password: blank).
The web browser and the word processing program are the most important and essential applications to me.
So are there any Linux versions in LXDE on LiveCD that include newer versions of Firefox (or at least another good browser) and Open Office (oo seems better than abi)? (Again, if no LXDE, perhaps XFCE?)
I just want to download a good version in an iso file, and burn it to a CD and get to work. Like I said the web browser and the word processing program are all important.
So really, what iso/LiveCD versions are the fastest for running on an older system, and yet have the newest browser and word processor included?
Does anyone know what the -k switch does? i.e., apache2 -k restart? I can't get much out of google but on my sarge based web server it's only with the -k switch that a restart actually works.
