Ubuntu :: Use Two Different Keyboards / Mice And Two Different Monitors Simultaneously Using Two Different Sessions On One Computer

Apr 28, 2010

I would like to be able to have two sessions, each with their own monitor and each having their own, assigned input devices, all off of one computer. In other words, two people would be able to use two different keyboards/mice and two different monitors simultaneously using two different sessions. Is this possible, or should I look into a terminal server machine?

Ubuntu :: Make 2 X Sessions Output Simultaneously?

Sep 12, 2010

I started a new x session on tty8. This is display 1. The first session is tty7 display 0.

I can switch between them easily enough. CTRL ALT F7 goes to tty7. CTRL ALT F8 goes to tty8.

But if I try to run, say, the "import" command for screenshots on tty8, while switched to tty7, all it gives is a black screen.

The reason being, I think, because only one session is actually outputting at any given time. How do I make both of them output, so I can take a screenshot on 1 session, but use the other session to do other stuff?

Server :: Automating Multiple Minicom Sessions Simultaneously

Oct 5, 2010

Here's the setup: One x86 server (Red Hat 4) with two serial connections to an embedded linux device. One serial connection is to a power control so the device can the restarted, and the other is used for a console to this device. Both serial connections use minicom. People on my team VNC to the x86 server, where they find the two minicom sessions waiting for them as they are left open. I would like to automate connecting to the server and communicating over the serial lines.

Supposing I use ssh to the x86 server, could minicom be used over the serial lines without terminating the minicom processes seen through VNC? If not, is there a way to re-open those windows from within the ssh session, so a user who VNCs to the server won't have to reopen them? Could a single ssh connection control two minicom terminals simultaneously, or would there need to be two ssh connections? It is assumed a user and the automated process will *not* try to access the device at the same time; the automation would trigger during off hours.

Ubuntu :: Display The Same Thing On Two Monitors Simultaneously?

Nov 18, 2010

I'm planning on getting an HDTV soon, and I'd like to be able to hook it up to my computer so that I can watch movies on it through my computer. I don't want to have dual monitors in the traditional sense where my desktop is spread across two screens. Rather, I just want my desktop to appear exactly the same on both my monitor and TV.

Is this possible? And if so, what would be the best way to go about doing this? My video card has two DVI ports, so I was planning on running a cable from the unused port to my TV and using a DVI-VGA adapter. Or would I be better off getting a TV with an S-video port, which I also have on my card, and connecting it that way

Ubuntu :: Getting Model Of Monitors Connected To Computer?

Jul 19, 2010

I am currently developing an small program in Python and at a certain point, I need to do some "stuff" depending on the monitors that are connected to the computer. I have an intel vga card with two outputs. I want to do something if one of the screens connected to the output is a "Dell", another something if one of the monitors is a "Nec" and another something if both monitors are connected.

So the question is: Is there any way to get the vendor/model of the monitors currently connected to the computer? I did a little bit testing. I plugged both screens to my vga card (the Nec to the HDMI output and the Dell to the DVI output), and the gnome-display-properties tool properly detected the model, size, resolution... of both screens connected. I would like to know if I can use a command on bash (or a library in python) to get the same information.

The /var/log/Xorg.0.log also shows properly:
(II) intel(0): EDID vendor "NEC", prod id 26345
(II) intel(0): I2C device "HDMIDDC_C:E-EDID segment register" registered at address 0x60.
(II) intel(0): I2C device "HDMIDDC_C:ddc2" registered at address 0xA0.
(II) intel(0): EDID vendor "DEL", prod id 41027

I could always parse that file, but it is not the best solution. I also tried the ddprobe command, but for some reason, it only detects one of the screens (the Dell, connected to a DVI cable). I am currently using Ubuntu 9.04 and Python2.4 (just in case it's relevant).

General :: Synergy Can't Get To All Monitors On One Computer?

I have Synergy setup between a Windows XP computer (Dual monitors) and a Linux computer (Dual Monitors). So it goes [XP1] [XP2] [L1] [L2]. The XP computer is my server (running Synergy+).

Synergy seems to work fine going from XP1 XP2 and L1 but I can't get to L2. My cursor bumps up against the right edge of L1 and shakes a little but won't go over to L2. However if I plug a mouse directly up to the Linux box I can go between L1 and L2 just fine.

Hardware :: Multiple Mice Or Pad Or Stylus Pointer?

May 30, 2011

There are several items about "multiple mice" but they are ancient based on internet time. I'm currently running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS but will likely update (clean install) soon. I'd like to know how to do this so that my new config plays with multiple pointers.

My laptop has a "track point" (eraser key) pointer built in. At times I connect a Logitech TrackPoint track ball. At other times I connect an external wheel mouse.I would like to preconfigure so that whatever I connect, X11 does the same things and the right things with the respective pointer. I also want X11 to know the details of my pointers so that I don't need to re-configure or tinker with parameters. (Wish List) I'd like to have a separate pointer cursor set for each device (a) just because, and (b) might have value if I'm swapping in real time. (eraser convenient while typing; external for drawing or similar.)

Ubuntu :: Multiple Simultaneous Keyboards With Unique Layouts

Aug 25, 2010

As the title says, I'm interested in two (or more) simultaneous keyboards, each with a unique layout. Everything I've researched indicates this should be possible, but I'm unable to get it to work. Regardless of how I set things up, all keyboards consistently operate as if they share the CoreDevice setting in xorg.conf.
In the above config, both keyboards behave as if they're set for the USA layout. Changing the layout in gnome-keyboard-properties affects all of the connected keyboards equally, but has no provision for altering individual devices.

Software :: Can't Set Up 2 Mice In Ubuntu 10.10 (1 Pointer, 1 Left-handed, 1 Right-handed)?

Mar 14, 2011

I have the problem that I cant configure PinguyOS (Ubuntu 10.10 i386, 2.6.35-23) to handle my two mice using the same pointer, using one mouse with a left- and the other one with a right-handed configuration.

Last system I used was Xubuntu and I was able to set up two mice - both were using the same pointer, but one was left-handed and the other one right-handed. I was very comfortable with that configuration to work with, but now I installed PinguyOS and I'm somehow no longer able to set it up.

Both mice are working just fine, but I can only manage to apply ONE configuration for both ones - meaning both mice are either left OR right-handed. I already searched the preferences / settings in PinguyOS, this and other forums and the software package manager, but I couldnt find anything. Both mice are plugged in via USB and are standard three-button-mice with a scrollwheel and are working properly.

OpenSUSE :: Making Permanent A Selection In 11.4 LXDE Between English And Thai Keyboards?

Jun 26, 2011

I'm seeking to make permanent a selection in openSUSE-11.4 LXDE between english and Thai keyboards. And I need help here, as I have only succeed partially. After installing Thai via YaST regional settings, I followed the advice in an LXDE forum here LXDE.org Forum - View topic - How to add layouts to keyboard preferences in LXDE? and on the LXDE Panel I righted click on LXPanel->Add/Remove Panel Items->Panel Applets->Add->Keyboard Layout Switcher. Upon a restart of X that gave me a US flag symbol (for US keyboard) in lower right hand corner. No other language selection. I then as a regular user sent the command

Code:

setxkbmap -option grp:switch,grp:alt_shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll us,th

and I then had a choice between Thai and US keyboard which worked well. That unfortunately is only temporary until the next reboot. HOW to make it permanent ? I tried, and I was unable to make that permanent. I tried adding .Xkbmap to /home/user (restarted/tested) and when that failed I tried adding .Xmodmap to /home/user (restarted/tested) and when that failed I tried adding /etc/X11/Xkbmap (restarted/tested) and when that failed I added same line to /etc/X11/Xmodmap (restarted/tested) and that also failed. The line in all cases was

Code:

-option grp:ctrl_shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll us, th

I also tired editing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/90_keytable.conf file, changing it to

Code:

Section "InputClass"
Identifier "LocalKeyboard"
MatchIsKeyboard "on"
Option "XkbLayout" "us, th"

[code]....

I could create a script with my 1st successful effort (and have that run when LXDE starts up) but surely there is a more elegant way? I am also NOT keen to have this system wide (even thou I tried that system wide (unsuccessfully) at the end) but I would rather only have this for one LXDE user.

Ubuntu :: Several Scripts Simultaneously Accessing One File

Jan 21, 2010

I made a script for batch processing brain scans (with FreeSurfer). I have a batch file stored on an NFS server that looks something like this:

Code:

subject1
subject2
subject3
subject4

now my script is performed on several computers at a time, first it marks an item to be in use (with sed -i 's/.../...'), then processes it (it gets the actual subject files from elsewhere on the server, then puts them back), then marks it to be finished in the list. so during action the batch file should look something like this:

Code:

subject1 finished
subject2 inprogress on host1
subject3 inprogress on host2
subject4

so i tried a run and watched the batch file, now i observed something like this:

Code:

subject1 finished
subject2 inprogress on host1
subject3 inprogress on host2

[code]....

there was only one script running on host1. the subjects never got marked as finished, although i know for a fact that they were finished. also, the script sometimes seemed to hang for moments.
