I'm tring to download an iso image that's over 3GB. The file is hosted at several ftp mirrors. Is there a way to download the file from several of these mirrors simultaneously so that I can reduce the D/L time? Presently, it's will take close to 24hrs to D/L from just one mirror. I have a 25Mbps connection so my bandwidth is not an issue.
View 8 RepliesI want to download a file (reasonably large) from say for e.g sourceforge. The problem is some mirrors give speeds of at max 40kB/s and I was considering options to increase this. I considered download managers and seems to work somewhat I experimented with axel and lftp's pget. Now I am wondering how I might download the same file from severals servers (say sourceforge's various mirrors). I tried axel by concataneting all server adresses but not sure if it is working. How do I verify that it is indeed using all the servers specified??
View 2 Replies View RelatedUbuntu Lucid 32-bit desktop machine. I run "aptitude update" and "aptitude safe-upgrade" manually from the command-line regularly to upgrade my machine. I usually don't pay that much attention to the downloading, but I noticed yesterday that aptitude appeared to be downloading four files simultaneously, rather than the one at a time that I've always seen. Would this be correct? How can I change that? I can't say I've ever noticed it before.
View 3 Replies View Relatedrecently I managed to install a plugin for Compiz that allows for head tracking. After getting past one hurdle after another I finally managed to compile it and made the webcam work with it in a 64-bit environment... Unfortunately, after I got this all working, the plugin constantly glitches out by zooming out immensely, distorting my desktop, and gives me a hall of mirrors effect. I know the plugin works because if I set some settings to minimum effect, it successfully tracks me and positions windows accordingly. But this makes the effect all jumpy and only works for periods of about 1.5 seconds then just doesn't do anything after that. Also, mouse tracking works flawlessly.

In Fedora 15 fresh installation, yum update does not work. During package download, it throws the message "no mirrors to try". Yum repolist is below:

How to be sure that my yum is working? I think its not working as: if I enter on terminal I find the error: Code: yum install yumex many lines saying trying other mirror and then at the last line: Code: python-enum-0.4.3-6.fc12.noarch: failure: Packages/python-enum-0.4.3-6.fc12.noarch.rpm from fedora: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.

What I note is that there are just 23 characters for the name in the first and third, whereas the second has more characters that generally does not truncate the name. Am I right in thinking that this is due to a different template being used when accessing via Debian? Is there some reason for why the filenames are truncated to 23 characters when accessing via Slackware? (Perhaps to keep the overall field length within 80 characters?)
I've tried to install mysql-server using yum, but the other mysql-packages that needs to be upgraded cannot be found on any of the mirrors that yum tries.

there is a problm with my mirrors..i cant even download or update anything .When i write yum install vlc

OK. I've successfully mirrored the Karmic Koala repositories. Now I have, and will have as time goes on, various computers I'll want to install Ubuntu on and point at the repository mirrors (Karmic now, Lucid later). Can I create a modified Live CD that will set up out computers from the beginning with /etc/apt/sources.list pointing at our mirrors, so we don't have to edit it later or tell people to edit it later? I've looked around and not found instructions on how to do it so far.

I understand the copy process between mirrors probably was errors. Becarefull friends. This bad iso aborts the installation process.
View 4 Replies View RelatedDoes anyone know if the Yum fastestmirror plugin only makes decisions based on latency to pick the best host or does it measure bandwidth? On my laptop for the last few weeks I've been getting super slow yum updates (3.5kB/sec), when I force it to use the baseurl it runs as fast as I'd expect (160+KB/sec).
So the fastestmirror plugin doesn't seem to work unless maybe it's measuring latency as fast but the actual download speed is slow. If so, fastestmirror plugin should really take both into account.
My yum is not working. I need cpan in order to install a perl module net::ldap.

View 1 Replies View RelatedAlmost every other time I run yum update, I'm getting mirror problems - this is losing all my confidence in Fedora for several reasons: a) it's wasting time - what should be 1-2 minute updates are taking 5-10 minutes and often (like tonight) not even completing b) since it keeps hanging and switiching mirrors during downloads I wonder if the updates are coming thru okay c) the fact this is not being seriously addressed makes me wonder re Fedora quality. Add to that the constant and real annoying kernel errors popping up re network manager and sierra wireless (even when my sprint card is not plugged in).

It turns out that it's because I'd let Ubuntu's Software Sources application "select best server" for me, and the server it chose (mirrors.ccs.neu.edu) doesn't appear to include updates for any versions of Ubuntu except Intrepid Ibex!
How crazy is that? The general list of Ubuntu mirrors reports the mirror as 'up to date', despite the fact that it doesn't actually maintain updates for current versions of Ubuntu. This strikes me as a serious problem. Software Sources should not select as a "best server" a mirror that doesn't even contain updates for your version of Ubuntu.
I heard that I should never run 2 web browsers at the same time.Is it true?Or does it apply to Ubuntu?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI made a script for batch processing brain scans (with FreeSurfer). I have a batch file stored on an NFS server that looks something like this:

now my script is performed on several computers at a time, first it marks an item to be in use (with sed -i 's/.../...'), then processes it (it gets the actual subject files from elsewhere on the server, then puts them back), then marks it to be finished in the list. so during action the batch file should look something like this:

subject2 inprogress on host1
subject3 inprogress on host2
subject4
so i tried a run and watched the batch file, now i observed something like this:

subject2 inprogress on host1
subject3 inprogress on host2
[code]....
there was only one script running on host1. the subjects never got marked as finished, although i know for a fact that they were finished. also, the script sometimes seemed to hang for moments.
