Software :: Running Two Commands Simultaneously From CLI?
Feb 10, 2009what i want to do is run two commands (nautilus and gedit) from the command line/shell script at the same time. i can obviously do && between them, but this requires the first app to close before moving on to the second one. i want to run both apps at the same time so i can run gedit with some project files open on it, and nautilus to browse those files/other files.

Feb 16, 2011After downloading a Chrome (for Linux of course) installation package via FireFox. Opening it from Downloads, entering the Administrator password. Then clicking on the " Install Package " button in the " Package Installer " window, I get a message:
"Only one software management tool is allowed to run at the same time, please close the other application 'synaptic', 'aptitude', or 'update manager' first."
I see no evidence of these apps or any others running & I got rid of the Firefox. Are these " Other Apps " hidden somewhere, how do I determine this?

Jun 11, 2011First I wanted to install the proprietary software Virtualbox-PURE cuz there is usb support, I need.
Added the Repository and installed it (virtualbox-4.0) and dkms.
Here is my sources.list

The result of all is:
virtualbox is still not running. I use experimental branch flash is not working now. flashplugin was installed, I restarted my browsers, not working. I tested it with opera, chromium and iceweasel.
My questions are:
How I ever can go back to stable?
How can I make virtualbox run?
How can I make flash run?
I'm using debian squeeze with gnome 2.30.5. When you need more infos or results of commands I give it to you. 2 days of work and nothing is running.
Ubuntu :: 10.04 Running Choppy On My Netbook - Scrolling - Particularly In Browsers - Is Very Glitchy
Jun 8, 2011I've borrowed a netbook from my girlfriend and she's let me put ubuntu on it so I can do some computing work, I installed 11.04 on it but it was a little slow so I tried 10.04. It looks great, I like it a lot, however it seems to be running a little choppy. The computer switches on and loads up in under a minute, and applications open up in a few seconds, however scrolling (particularly in browsers) is very glitchy looking, as is minimising and opening windows, nothing seems to be running smoothly.
A little info for you: using an ASUS eePC 1101HA, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx Netbook Edition (However I prefer GNOME and removed the netbook launcher), I'm a Mac user but I use the Terminal a lot so I'm fairly confident with basic commands.
Software :: Running Xvidcap - For Screen Capture - Audacity - For Audio - Simultaneously
Jan 23, 2011Im trying to create some screencast videos on Ubuntu. As its a well known fact we dont have a very good screencasting too like Camtasia(only windows) on linux.
After googling extensively I zeroed on Xvidcap for screen capturing and Audacity for audio capture.
According to tutorial [url] first we need to run Xvidcap (do the screen capturing recording first) and then again use Audacity for audio recording .. then mix both video and audio.
I guess this is a pain staking process (running video and audio recording seperately), I thought of running Xvidcap and Audacity simultaneously, if i do this xvicap works perfectly (video capturing happens) but audio capture through audacity does not work.
Note: I even try to run the above tools from seperate terminals/consoles (assuming they are seperate processes)
I even disabled 'audio' in xvidcap and tried to run both at the same time but audacity refuses to work.
I think both the tools are trying to use the same system resources ... and audacity is unable to get hold of the required resources.
Can we run both independently at the same time ?
General :: Web Browsers Running Much Slower, Compared With Windows 7, Same PC?
Jan 28, 2010Debian lenny, old install (I've upgraded to lenny when it was just about to become the stable release), versus windows 7, fresh install.Comparing browsers speeds with numion.com/Stopwatch.html, I had results such as:Iceweasel (firefox) on linux: from 9.154 seconds to 21:860 seconds (the same webpage, reloaded)Firefox on windows: 4.32 seconds - and never much slower than thatThe fastest browser on linux was Opera, ranging from 8.562 to 5.503 secs to load the same page, but even internet explorer beat/match it with its timing of about five seconds.
I have not other browsers on windows; on linux there is aroraonqueror (KDE3), kazehakase, chrome, and dillo, besides text browsers. I didn't test on dillo; Kazehakase and chrome were the only ones which had nearly decent results, but still very bad, 11 to 13 seconds for chrome, and 21 for kazehakase. Konqueror just seemed to never finish to load the page, I gave up when it was still loading somethingfter nutes and 5 seconds.'ve emptied the cache every time I would test, and I was running almost only the browsers and not much else. Whatever comes by default on windows, and on linux, I was on openbox, with nothing much going on I guess, I think the most memory consuming processthe time, besides xorg and the browsers themselves, was dictd.
I've researched a little bit about, but not enough to make a list of possible things to change in order to improve the speed on linux. Most of the time there are people just agreeing that on windows the rendering is faster, and other people saying that with them is the opposite, with some minor variations like people saying that linux is faster for plain downloads while windows is faster for web browsing due to better graphics.
(by the way; I haven't installed any graphic card driver on windows, which is still running on 1024x768, while linux runs on 1280x1024, with the "nv" generic driver, without fancy options, not supported by my old card) The closest to a suggestion of possible solutions was someone saying tha compilation may affect performance, I guess it was both about kernel compilation, and the web browsers themselves.I'll google a bit more about how to "compile for speed", both kernels and programs (maybe the x server

Feb 12, 2011I'm tring to download an iso image that's over 3GB. The file is hosted at several ftp mirrors. Is there a way to download the file from several of these mirrors simultaneously so that I can reduce the D/L time? Presently, it's will take close to 24hrs to D/L from just one mirror. I have a 25Mbps connection so my bandwidth is not an issue.

Jan 21, 2010I made a script for batch processing brain scans (with FreeSurfer). I have a batch file stored on an NFS server that looks something like this:

now my script is performed on several computers at a time, first it marks an item to be in use (with sed -i 's/.../...'), then processes it (it gets the actual subject files from elsewhere on the server, then puts them back), then marks it to be finished in the list. so during action the batch file should look something like this:

subject3 inprogress on host2
subject4
so i tried a run and watched the batch file, now i observed something like this:

there was only one script running on host1. the subjects never got marked as finished, although i know for a fact that they were finished. also, the script sometimes seemed to hang for moments.
Ubuntu :: Make 2 X Sessions Output Simultaneously?
Sep 12, 2010I started a new x session on tty8. This is display 1. The first session is tty7 display 0.
I can switch between them easily enough. CTRL ALT F7 goes to tty7. CTRL ALT F8 goes to tty8.
But if I try to run, say, the "import" command for screenshots on tty8, while switched to tty7, all it gives is a black screen.
The reason being, I think, because only one session is actually outputting at any given time. How do I make both of them output, so I can take a screenshot on 1 session, but use the other session to do other stuff?

Nov 11, 2010I recently purchased a set of three professional mics and converters for them (they are XLR mics, so i bought three icicles to convert into the USB port)The computer sees all three microphones, but I can figure out how to be able to record on all three at the same time.Is this at all possible, or did I just waste a ton of money on converters?EDIT: I would like to add that these mics are identical, and I'm wondering if nothing else if it's possible to merge the two mount points so that it appears as one micEDIT AGAIN: I have also just installed Pulse Audio Volume Control, and it picks up both mics. Nov 18, 2010I'm planning on getting an HDTV soon, and I'd like to be able to hook it up to my computer so that I can watch movies on it through my computer. I don't want to have dual monitors in the traditional sense where my desktop is spread across two screens. Rather, I just want my desktop to appear exactly the same on both my monitor and TV.
Is this possible? And if so, what would be the best way to go about doing this? My video card has two DVI ports, so I was planning on running a cable from the unused port to my TV and using a DVI-VGA adapter. Or would I be better off getting a TV with an S-video port, which I also have on my card, and connecting it that way

Jan 6, 2011I have a Lucid server with several external (eSATA) NTFS formatted drives. Right now, I'm sharing everything through Samba and administered through Webmin. Partly because I'd like to play with it and learn more and partly to see if there's any appreciable difference in overhead and speed, I'd like to try out NFS.
My question is, can the two sharing schemes (NFS and Samba) coexist on the same box peacefully?If not, I can rid of Samba and go with NFS, but I'd rather give it a shot first.Plus, some of the clients are Windows machines, so I'd have to install the SFU tools in order to get an NFS client on them.

Jan 10, 2011I'm on Ubuntu 10.04 64bit, and I've got JACK and Pulseaudio both installed, though I don't run them simultaneously. I also have LinuxSampler and Rosegarden, and I have the necessary ALSA drivers. Pulseaudio can output to my external sound card, but JACK doesn't, even if I tell it to. I've seen its full name (Guitar Rig Mobile IO) and chosen it as the output device under Settings, but to no avail. It still sends the output to the internal (and crappy) sound card.

After I start ANY web browser (firefox,chrome,opera,midori,galeon) CPU is used above 90%. It's the same on any web site,without flash player. Browsers are using at least 60% CPU. Everything else is ok. It was the same case with 9.04 installed in past.

Mar 26, 2010I have a USB mouse and a USB audio DAC. Both work fine separately with linux. The problem is when I try using both simultaneously. The first-plugged device will work fine, but not the second-plugged device. That is, if I plug the mouse first and the DAC second, then the mouse works and the DAC doesn't work. And conversely.
When I say that the second-plugged device doesn't work, here's what I mean: the USB device is detected by the system, but gets "reset" every 2 seconds and can't be actually used at all. Here are some log messages. Here I'm working in the case where I have plugged the mouse first and am plugging the DAC second.

It loads one or the other (whichever I click on first) and then gets about 1/4 through on the one that I didnt load first. It then stays stuck at 1/4 until I restart Rythmbox. Apr 24, 2011Ubuntu Lucid 32-bit desktop machine. I run "aptitude update" and "aptitude safe-upgrade" manually from the command-line regularly to upgrade my machine. I usually don't pay that much attention to the downloading, but I noticed yesterday that aptitude appeared to be downloading four files simultaneously, rather than the one at a time that I've always seen. Would this be correct? How can I change that? I can't say I've ever noticed it before.

Ubuntu :: Fonts In Web Browsers Look Bad
Jul 26, 2010Everything looked great until I installed and then uninstalled Kubuntu desktop. Now the fonts in Chrome and Firefox look, imho, "bad". I installed the msttcorefonts but there is no difference. I've attached a screenshot, which illustrates the problem. It looks to me like the bold is too bold and the normal type is too thin and not spaced correctly.

May 7, 2011i've got an annoying problem. on a regular basis my browsers keep crashing out on various websites. videos, newgrounds, etc. one moment i'm doing something, the next thing, it just froze. firefox 4, opera 11.10 and chrome 11. each crash is different, but they crash never the less. firefox freezes and when i try to close it, the whole screen turns to a blank light blue. after a moment a message pops up to allow it to be forcefully terminated. opera is similar. chrome is different. you just cannot shut it down for quite some time. i'm guessing it has something to do with flash, but i'm already running the latest version with the help of flash-aid.

Jul 31, 2011I am still in progress of testing 11.04 on my HP probook 6550b. This is basically rather current and standard intel based notebook with M520/2.4ghz and intel HD graphic i5. 11.04 runs on it either with unity or classic, but regardless of which gui I use, browsers do crash all the time. Tried firefox with default extensions, then seamonkey and then chromium. Nothing works really. I am not able to run any search in this forum for example, this will make any of the browsers crash. The kernels I tried are standard 32bit as well as -pae variety. Everything seemed to be more stable on real 64bit ubuntu, but number of software does not work here, so not real alternative. Any experience with browsers permanently crashing on 11.04? Example of crash readout of the firefox:
