View 2 RepliesHow can I define a hotkey which will raise (and ideally also lower) a specific window or application?. Assuming epiphany is minimized, pressing F5 will raise the epiphany window. Pressing F5 again will minimize it. Something like guake/tilda.

View 3 Replies View RelatedHow to lower the resolution of all the images in a pdf? I searched around and couldn't find an answer to this. I have a pdf file of a textbook that I use in school but each page is an image of 2 pages of the textbook (left page, right page when the book is opened) and each image is of a very high resolution. I downloaded pdftk and pdfedit but for such a simple problem, I'm having trouble. Is there any way to do this?
I have tried converting the 380 MB PDF file to PostScript but after an hour of doing that, it stopped, and the PostScript only had about 17 pages instead of the 733. So converting it back to a PDF file to utilize pdftk's algorithms would have been worthless. I know I could split up the pdf file into sections but I'd rather just scale down all the images, or make them mid quality PNGs or high quality JPGs just so the filesize can be halved.
I need to run fsck on my Ubuntu 10.04 machine, but when trying to enter lower runlevel (with init 1), computer freezes with error message "could not write bytes broken pipe". So, how I can fix this and/or check my disk with fsck?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed 10.04 1st by making a partition with bootcamp on MacOSX.Then I formatted the partition according to Ubuntu's instructions. I didn't install rEFIt, because I prefer to just hit the alt (option) key.I made the necessary adjustments according to URL...Community Ubuntu Documentation - and everything seemed to be working fine.I upgraded to Maverick and everything seemed to be working fine aswell. But then I noticed, that the wireless signal keeps failing and I'm asked to put the password again and again..
I don't think this is due to the upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10, but I just noticed it recently, maybe because of the air humidity, the signal was stronger a few days a go.. don't know!!Is there anything I can do?Perhaps install a new driver, or another wificlient, like Wifi-Radar??
I want to move notifications both from pidgin, rhythmbox and other apps to the lower right side so that they are not so intrusive, I don't know if it's possible.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI needed Ubuntu server and recklessly picked Karmic. Hardware is some regular 775 mobo with integrated Intel graphics. Monitor is ASUS VH222D. Installation went smoothly but after that problems occurred. Shell is displayed in 1920x1080 resolution and fonts are so small almost unreadable. Grub2 looks OK, standard non-fb and so does few rows of text after loading grub but soon after that framebuffer becomes active.
dpkg-reconfigure console-setup doesn't mention resolution. Some articles are leading to grub2 gfxmode but none of manuals helped. I just cannot change grub2 menu resolution to anything else than standard console fonts (non-fb). Kernel option vga=XXX is no longer working. How to lower shell resolution? Why is this automatic???
After upgrade to ubuntu 10.04 my screen resolution become 800x600 and in 'Monitors' I see only 2 options 800x600 and 640x480. but before upgrade I had much higher resolution in 9.04

View 3 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from 9.04 to 10.04.1 so I am still using legacy grub.Anyway, I noticed with the update that the console is using the framebuffer and using VESA for high resolutions.I really don't like or want this feature. So I added vga=0 to get 80x25 and it works initially but just when the X server is running (Xubuntu in my case) I can see how the console switches to a high resolution again. After this, if I go to a console, lets say tty1, it is using again a high resolution instead of 80x25 (VGA). Is there a way to force the consoles to be in a lower resolution and keep it that way? It used to work fine in ubuntu 8.xx and 9.xx

View 10 Replies View RelatedThis is my third Ubuntu installation, and even with identical hardware, sound volume is dramatically less than under Windows. I turn every slider up all the way, and it is still less than half as loud as Windows.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThis is some thing that I've noticed with any install of Ubuntu whether its regular Ubuntu or Kubuntu etc. The splash that comes up with the distro name Ubuntu/Kubuntu on start up look perfectly fine and as it should until I've installed my Nvidia drivers. then it goes all bung.
Lower Resolution. Slightly different colouring and Not taking up the whole screen. Sometimes it even sits slightly to the right.
Is there a way that I can fix this? I know its nothing all that major but it would be nice if it looked as its meant to.
I am really in need of expert help. I have started using Ubuntu last week, so a novice, and this is for my project work which needs a linux OS to install another programme (OOF).
I have installed 10.04 in an external hard disk and was able to use it without issues. While attemting istalltion of OOF it was giving me error messages and OOF forum suggested to use Ubuntu 9.04. So i have started installing 9.04 from the same external drive after uninstalling 10.04. I have used the live CD for both these installations. But Ubuntu 9.04 never completes the instalaltion. It is getting struck and aborted twice. My external drive is not partitioned and windows 32 bit is laptop -ACRE ASPIRE 5738, 250 GD HDD, Vista and 4 GB DDR.
I just recently installed ubuntu so I'm quite lost on some stuff. This little annoyance comes from the volume levels in Ubuntu 10.04. I have partitioned my computer to have dual boot into windows and ubuntu, so I know the problems are not related to the hardware itself as everything works just fine in windows. I am using a Dell Inspiron 9400, for reference.
The multimedia keys on the computer respond correctly but on the lower three volume settings sound completely drops out as if I had muted the computer. I went into the Alsa mixer to see if I could configure these sound levels and sure enough the master volume was down to zero, PCM and LFE are also low . I changed the settings of the lower levels but when I press on the volume up or down media keys to switch level the settings get reset. I tried just changing one level, exiting and saving through alsactl but it didn't stick. Even after reboot the settings are back to the zero volume on the first levels.
I have a keyboard with media buttons on it which work fine. I do have a question about the 2 buttons for lower and higher volume. Pressing the higher volume button increases the volume with a maximum of 18 steps, where step 0 = mute and step 17 is maximum. I wonder if it is possible to increase the number of steps to make the volume change not so big per step. Now I have one step which is a bit too loud, and one step lower is not loud enough.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using Brasero to burn DVDs and I'm burning at 4x speed (the DVDs and the DVD burner both support 16x max). The problem is that while burning, the speed is too low and it jumps around between 1.5x and 2.4x. This seems weird to me.shouldn't the burn process fail if it drops below 4x or if the speed is as unsteady as it is? But the DVDs seem to turn out fine anyway.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI run a linux box as a gateway behind a satellite modem. The internet link over the satellite modem is only 1mbit so the usage often reaches 100% when someone is downloading/uploading something. The satellite operator is saying this is normal, but I have my doubts.
Has ICMP got a lower priority? Should I really be seeing this behaviour? I understand that if it was a TCP packet then it would just be queued until the previous acknowledgement has been received. And if it was a UDP packet then it would have been dropped, but how does ICMP deal with these situations during heavy traffic?
EDIT: I finally figured out how to do it - xbacklight -dec 10 lowers, xbacklight +inc 10 increaces. I'll use ubuntu tweak to get the shortcuts. I got my self a new lappy, and Acer Aspire One 751h-1948. After that, I installed Ubuntu Karmic on that, while leaving a 20GB XP partition. I configured it's Intel GMA500 Poulsbo video card, so now I can use it at the native 1366x768 res. Most of my fn keys work, other than one very important one, and here lies my problem; The brightness keys dont work(fn+left/right arrow). I've searched the net for a long time, but I still can't find a solution that works with karmic - perhaps i should downgrade?
