Im trying to figure out what the latest patch set for ubuntu 10 did to my system.
When I login there USE to be a power off menu on the upper right of my screen.
Now to get my system to power down I have to login into to a terminal and issue sudo shutdown.
What happened to the power off menu?
I tried to update again but still nothing. Seems like some patch was bad?
For some reason when I restarted my computer today, I see the desktop but my panels are missing. What should I do? I am running Xubuntu 10.04

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble with the grub boot menu. I have a dual boot system, Windows XP 32 bit and Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit. Windows was preexisting when I installed Ubuntu. The install went fine but when I restarted, the Grub menu gives the option of the Windows boot loader but when I tab to that and press enter the screen goes black and the curser just blinks in the upper left corner...no XP boot. The XP drive is there as I can mount it from Ubuntu side but when I try to boot into it it does not seem to be there. What have I done and what can be done so that I can boot into the XP side?

I am having a hard time recreating the actual steps that he took. boot the computer and "Missing Operating System" message in upper left corner of screen. Not good, I think. I insert the Max OS X install disk and boot holding the "c" key so the system boots from the CD. Instead of installing, there is a disk utility tool from the pull-down. It shows the system hard-drive and the CD/DVD drive. So far so good. When I look closer at the hard drive, there appears to be a single Linux partitiion. No Mac OS partition. I know enough about computers to know that if the Mac OS disk partition is not visible, there' s probably no easy way to retrieve the 1.5 years worth of family pictures, applications, website I had built, etc. My "best guess" is that somewhere along the way, when he tried to install Fedora to the USB memory stick, that he inadvertantly attempted to install it to the hard drive. best route to recovery?

Occasionally, the power off button on the panel goes missing on Ubuntu 10.10 installation. I can't seem to notice any pattern to it. I can shut down from the command line just fine, but how can I get the button back?
View 2 Replies View Relatedwhen I boot up ubuntu, the suspend and hibernate buttons will be missing and the alsa stuff wont work. When I select shutdown or restart or log out from the power menu ( the one that's missing the 2
buttons) it only logs off the user. I've tried reinstalling the kernel and updating grub for a solution to no avail. The only way to shutdown the system when this occurs is through a sudo halt command in terminal. I may have to use the command a few times until the computer will boot with sound and all of the suspend/hibernate buttons in place.
I've installed lucid on two computers now and have been using or a few months.Overall, it's pretty good and everything just works. However, every now and then (seemingly random), the power button in the indicator appletsion panel widget randomly disappears, so I'm unable to shut down my computer without re-adding the widget, or using the command line to shutdown the computer. Now this is acceptable for me, an advanced user. However, this is not acceptable for my parents and family, who also use ubuntu computers. Today, my mother called me to ask why she couldn't turn off her computer. I was dumbfounded, and had to walk her through turning it off "by hand."
Now this is not me accidentally removing the indicator applet session panel item. No, I can still see the user name bubble with availability information and I can still switch users. It's just that the power button is completely missing (sometimes the place where it used to be is occupied by a corrupt graphic). Additionally, if I login later, the power button magically returns without me having to do anything with regards to the panel. This is disappointing indeed.
Honestly, this is why ubuntu and linux in general still have the reputation they do of being non-user-friendly. At least in windows or mac, when I get fed-up I can turn it off. But not so in ubuntu. No ubuntu tortures me continuously and I marvel that such a simple thing has escaped the minds of such advanced programmers. I wish Canonical would focus on letting us TURN OFF the computer instead of adding crazy features that I'm not going to use. I mean how can a real operating system fail at such a simple task
The menus at the tops of 10.10 have gone? All ive done is update. Sometimes my power off button is missing too?

Q: In suse if you click System in the menus in the top left hand corner all the power operations are there, reboot shutdown etc.

My power button icon on the toolbar in Unity is invisible -- that is, it occupies the far right-most column of pixels and displays no icon. (See attached screenshot -- the power button menu only comes up with the mouse all the way to the far right (where you can't really see it in the screencap.)).Any idea how to get it back? It's not a big deal, but it'd be nice to avoid being made fun of by my OS X/Wind0ze-using friends for having an invisible power button.I have Natty installed, but using the same /home (and thus the same config files) from previous installs. Windows did not complain so far but hibernate is missing from Ubuntu's power down options. I installed Ubuntu Tweak, but cannot see an option to re-enable. Is this something to do with the swapped HDDs &/or the swap partition? Or more likely a recent update?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm using Slackware64 13.37 with Robby's Xfce 4.8 build on a laptop with two batteries. I've noticed that when the charge for one battery is depleted, the empty battery icon for the xfce4-power-manager panel applet is displayed as an "image missing" icon (see the attachments for screenshots of how this progresses).
Is this just down to a missing image, or is it more subtle than that? Has anyone else had the same problem, and if so how did you fix it? So far I've tried clearing the GTK+ icon cache and reinstalling the hicolor icon theme package as suggested in other threads in this forum, but nothing changed.
Last week I upgraded my Ubuntu 8.04 to a 8.10. While my ever so loyal machine was performing this business, I started my diner, once in a while having a quick look at how things were going. And they were going fine. The last thing I noticed on the screen was that upgrading was at about 3 minutes from finishing, and when I got back to my PC I was confronted with a black screen. Later on I found out that the reason for the crash was a malfunctioning USB-hub in which my mouse was located.
Anyway, I couldn't get my Ubuntu running, the only thing I got to do was reach the log-in screen, enter my username and password, after which the screen froze. Typing CTRL+ALT+F1 gave me a terminal window, but I had no clue what to go looking for or where/how I could find it.
In the mean time I re-partitioned the HD (75GB), placed the old Ubuntu on a 30GB partition and gave the other 45GB to a new partition on which I re-installed my Ubuntu 8.04. Working from that partition I was able to find out that the old version had indeed upgraded to 8.10 but was missing the <gnome-power-manager> file.
My question now: If I can in any way restore that missing file or point me out some kind of tutorial where I can learn how to do it?
Untill now I have been looking through about a few hundred tutorials, but most of them are written by people who know the terminal inside-out, and frankly are not really easily understandable for newbies.
The fact is: in that old version I have many maps and files which I would like to save (yes, you are completely right: I should have saved them in the first place!) but some of them are for some reason write-protected and I do not know how to get root-priviliges to un-lock them.
I have upgraded my EeePC from 9.10 to 10.04 and got now a black screen after I can login. On the right upper corner, I find an error message:

I've read some threads as to how to do this and came to know that we need to skip installation of LILO in slackware installation and an entry for slackware in the menu.lst file of grub. View 3 Replies View Relatedi have an old p3 compqa desktop install 10.04.2 lts on it. install went ok. set to autologin. when it does so, gnome starts but there is no bottom or top menu bar. keyboard shortbut for terminal works and keyboard shortcut alt-f1 for running programs works but i would like to get the top menu bar or at least know a shortbut to get to network preference because i can't seem to get the machine configured for net access...

Good day, having a spot of bother with Openoffice, for some unknown reason im finding majority of the menu & button names have been replaced with "O" characters instead. Its doesn't effect all, but for example in the Writer, the only drop down menu at the top being render correctly is "Table". code...
All the buttons/sub buttons still work if you can guess where their pointing!
The only way I can seem to solve it is to remove "openoffice.org-gnome" & "openoffice.org-gtk" package.
Ive tried a complete reinstall already. Its usable without the above gnome and gtk extras but obviously not as nice to look at.
Im sure it was working fine the last time I used it?
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 in a partition alongside two other partitions that contain windows. One is a windows xp recovery partition (about 8 GB) and the other is windows xp media center (about 37 GB).The Ubuntu partition is about 180 GB. Anyway, after I installed it, I was only able to boot to Windows XP. I can't boot to Ubuntu.Using supergrub, however, I am able to get Ubuntu to boot up. In supergrub, I got to Gnu/Linux, select the option to "Boot Gnu/Linux directly", and it works.However, if I try the "Fix grub" option, I get "error 15: file not found". Also, if I try to the option of "Boot to Partiion" and I select the Ubuntu partition, I get "error 13: invalid or unsupported exectuable format".When in Ubuntu, I opened the terminal and tried the following:gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
The menu.lst file is empty. There is nothing in it.What is going on? How can I fix it so when I boot the computer I'm given the option of booting to Windows XP media center or to Ubuntu?For additional info, I ran the bootinfoscript and the results.txt file is pasted below.

I'm currently using Ubuntu 10.10 and the version of Wine in the standard repository. In the past, when I've installed wine, it automatically gave me a Programs menu from which I could launch all the Windows programs I installed. That menu is now missing.I tried uninstalling Wine, removing the ~/.wine folder, and removing all references to wine and wine programs in ~/.local/share... with no effect.can't get the Programs menu to come back.

I have checked 'show menu icons' option in Xubuntu settings, and all gtk apps have their icons. Skype is a Qt app however. VLC is also a Qt app, and it's missing its icons, too.
