Ubuntu :: Upgrading From 10.04 To 10.10 - Error Upgrades Calculation Is Not Possible
Mar 3, 2011
I got an error Upgrades calculation is not possible An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages. This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

Been looking on the internet for a similar problem but to no avail.
I'm currently trying to upgrade an old laptop from ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04.
It's been all nice a dandy until I hit the "installing upgrades" part.
There it simply stopped. The bar stops moving and everything.
Opening the terminal I find:
WARNING: Failed to read mirror file
(reading database... 193395 files and folders relevant installed.)
Makes ready to replace libnih-dbus1 1.0.2-lubunbu2 (with .../libnih-dbus_1.1.0.3-lubuntul_i386.deb)...
Unpacking replacement libnih-dbus1...
It has been like this for 2 hours.
Ubuntu is the only OS on the laptop.

I am running Lucid 32-bit server P3 command line server version that began life as a 9.10-server, now upgraded to 10.04. Upgrade has been running since June, 2010. A few weeks ago, I realized that phpldapadmin was not running correctly. In finding the solution for the phpldapadmin issue, now, upgrades are giving me the following:
Code:
admin@myserver:/$ sudo apt-get update[sudo] password for administrator:
Hit [URL]
Get:1 [URL]
Ign [URL]
Ign [URL]
>>>> snip <<<<<
Reading package lists... Done
administrator@wdnserver:/$ sudo apt-get upgrade .....
No apport report written because MaxReports is reached already
Errors were encountered While processing:
grub-pc
samba-common
samba-common-bin
smbclient
smbfs
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
I have read many posts trying to find a reference to
Code:
dpkg: error processing grub-pc (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 10
because this started with grub-pc being the first and only package that refused to install. I have yet to find a direct reference to 'error exit status 10'. I find many other status codes, but few of 'status 10'.
Now, unfortunately, work took me away for a few of weeks and now I am getting errors for:
grub-pc
samba-common
samba-common-bin
smbclient
smbfs
I have tried
Code:
apt-get -f install
and that does work.
I have tried
Code:
apt-get purge grub-pc
and then re-installing grub-pc still gives same error.
And finally there are many other attempts, all with the same result.

I just did a fresh install of Slackware 13.0 on a Toshiba laptop, and the ONLY thing I did on it after creating a user and switching to init 4 was to run upgrades. After doing so several applications failed to launch, so I rebooted the machine. I get the following error followed by a login prompt:
Code:
/bin/sh: error while loading shared libraries: libtermcap.so.2: cannot open shaed object file: no such file or directory And nobody can log in, including root. I've got another laptop running 13.0 with all the latest upgrades and it runs fine.

I am having problems with the useradd command. When I call "useradd someuser" the program starts and never finish. When I give the UID option (useradd -u ) sometimes it works properly, but with some UID's that aren't in /etc/passwd it shows a message saying that the uid is not unique. I checked out /var/log/auth.log and nothing about the command is being logged. It seems that the command is not calculating the new UID prperly. It's running on a Debian Linux 2.6.26-2-686 i686 GNU/Linux

I am running a 64 bit RHEL 4 in one of mymachines with 8 Gb of physical memory. But when I run the top command, it outputs as below:
Code:
Mem: 8165428k total, 8109988k used, 55440k free, 65772k buffers
Swap: 4194296k total, 135596k used, 4058700k free, 6739936k cached On calculation, it shows it has only 7.7 Gb of memory if I calculate ( using 1 Gb = 1024*1024 Kb).
Where is .3Gb gone ? Again, it is a 64 bit machine..so should see all 8Gb. Is it mistake of top command calculating 1Gb=1024*1000Kb ?

ipcalc isn't the one I am thinking of. I remember another one that was a bit better, with more options -- easier to use.I remember that if you gave it a CIDR network /23 and an IP, it would list all of the address ranges, network, broadcast for that network..

Here is my situation:I have a series of .plt files that are geared for a device that has it's xy origin at the lower left of the paper however some devices use the center of the paper as it's origin in a piped shell script how can I convert this file to a center origin plot file? Here are some knowns: the existing file always Lower Left 0.0 the existing file max xy is the page upper right x.x the desired output file must have it's 0.0 at the exact center of page (page size will vary). Ideas: Based on the sample files included maybe use PU and PD as the triggers for inputs to be calculated as any other commands have nothing to do with coordinates.

I know several tools that allow tracking time spend on different tasks / projects. Is there any existing tool for very very simplified work-time-tracking.I am an employee, come to the office, switch on my laptop directly. I have mostly around 1 hr lunchtime, but sometimes less, sometimes more.At around 18:00 I want to type one command in the console (or simple GUI would also be okay of course) that tells me:"1 hour overworked. Go home now! (came at 8:00, 1 hour standard lunch-break)."

I'm currently upgrading from ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 (I installed my ubuntu using the windows ubuntu installer, wubi, a few months ago). I started the update manager to upgrade, and everything was going fine until it started installing the upgrades, more specifically when it got to "Preparing memtest86+", when it started continuously saying in the terminal "Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-22-generic". It's been stuck at "About 43 minutes remaining" for about half an hour. I've included a screenshot of my computer in the state it is in as I type this message.

I need immediate assistance on the upgrade process off ubuntu server from version 9.04 to 9.10. Here is my output after running do-release-upgrade. I first ran the release upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04, which ran really smoothely without errors and at the end prompted a reboot. I have rebooted and decided to upgrade further - 9.04 to 9.10. And here is the result. I saw this long into the upgrade process, somewhere 1.5 hours into the upgrade: [URL]

Error during commit 'E:Internal Error, Could not perform immediate configuration (2) on mountall' Restoring original system state
Yeah...that's what I get every time I try to upgrade to lucid lynx.
NOTE: I haven't updated for quite some time. I may have gotten one or two updates for karmic but that was it. Just thought it might be important....
NOTE: Also not sure if this is important, but karmic installed and did some funny stuff to itself. My desktop no longer exists. It just isn't there. Also, when I try to turn of my computer it gets all kinds of errors and eventually I have to just pull the plug....something about a dev loop0 right after is says its deactivating swap...

During upgrading from 8.04 to 10.04, I was asked several times what I wanted to do with menu.lst. I gave the same reply each time: "keep the local version currently installed". I wanted it the way I had when using 8.04; that is, not having the un-customizable grub menu I've experienced before with 10.04.
When I was done installing 10.04 and was going to reboot, the GRUB menu appears as it has before, and the Ubuntu entry says "Ubuntu 8.04", even though it's now 10.04. But when I choose "Ubuntu 8.04", the following error message occurs:
Code:
error sending message: Connection refused
udevadm[900] error sending message: Connection refused
udevadm[901] error sending message: Connection refused
udevadm[902] error sending message: Connection refused
error: unexpectedly disconnected from boot status daemon

I upgraded Ubuntu from version 10.04 to 10.10. When the upgrade completed I was asked to reboot. After reboot I simply got the message "error: file not found" on the screen. After a few seconds the machine rebooted.
I guess it is the boot loader that was not found. Is there some hope of fixing this problem?

I recently upgraded from Maverick to Natty. The upgrade process went fine and I am able to log in to Natty and use my computer fine.
However, during the installation there was an error upgrading likewise-open from 5.0.xx to 6.0.xx. I thought perhaps removing likewise-open 5.0.xx and installing 6.0.xx (instead of upgrading) may fix the problem.
This what I get:

I want to upgrade my 32bit Fedora from 11 to 13 version. I tried both options: via preupgrade tool and via installation media (DVD). Both options failed with following Anaconda error at the beginning of installation process:
RpmUtilsError: RPM Error opening Package
In my case, the problem was in package:
/mnt/sysimage/var/cache/yum/anaconda-InstallationRepo-xxx.i386/packages/fontpackages-filesystem-1.44-1.fc13.noarch.rpm.
I switched to terminal, and discovered that size of this file is 0.
I downloaded installation DVD from official torrent, so checksum was autmatically checked. Verification test at the beginnig of installation was also successfully passed. So media is OK. Moreover, I also tried to upgrade via preupgrade tool with the same results.
I found similar bug with unclear status in Fedora Bug Tracking system for Anaconda in F12: [URL]
