Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading From 10.10 To 11.04 Stops At "installing Upgrades"

May 8, 2011

Been looking on the internet for a similar problem but to no avail.

I'm currently trying to upgrade an old laptop from ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04.
It's been all nice a dandy until I hit the "installing upgrades" part.

There it simply stopped. The bar stops moving and everything.

Opening the terminal I find:

WARNING: Failed to read mirror file
(reading database... 193395 files and folders relevant installed.)
Makes ready to replace libnih-dbus1 1.0.2-lubunbu2 (with .../libnih-dbus_1.1.0.3-lubuntul_i386.deb)...
Unpacking replacement libnih-dbus1...

It has been like this for 2 hours.

Ubuntu is the only OS on the laptop.

Ubuntu Installation :: Frozen During Installing The Upgrades ?

Oct 2, 2010

I'm trying to upgrade from 9.10 to 10.4 on an R51 thinkpad. 9.10 was current and up to date (did that right before the upgrade). All seemed to be going well, but the system appears frozen during "installing the upgrades". At the time of the freeze, it said "about 2 hours 5 minutes remaining" that was ~5.5 hrs ago. The system is locked up, unresponsive. do I force a reboot, and hope for the best? let it sit and assume that it is doing something? The bad thing is that I missed a folder (wife's) in my backup of data prior to upgrade. So getting that back is important.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading Stops At "setting New Software Channels"?

May 3, 2011

ave a problem with upgrading to Natty. It stopped at 99% at "setting new software channels" and just did nothing for a long time, so I forced it to close. Now I have all the "natty" repositories in my software sources. Is it safe just to do "sudo apt-get update" and "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" now? If not, what should I do? Trying to upgrade using the official updater always stops at 99% when "setting new software channels", even after rebooting.

Ubuntu :: Backup 10.04 Installation (before Installing Or Upgrading)

May 18, 2011

I want to try 11.04 from scratch but Ive been using 10.04 without problems and Id love to have a perfect backup of the whole system before I try the new one and at the same time, transfer my 10.04 configuration to 11.04 (I did some changes using the terminal and input some "magic words" that I dont remember).

Is there any way to do this, or should I just backup my 10.04 (once you tell me how ) and then upgrade to 11.04?.

Is there a difference between installing 11.04 from scratch or upgrading from 10.04 btw?

Some info: I have 10.04 installed thru windows, so I wonder if I can just copy the wubildr and wubildr.mbr files and the ubuntu directory as a backup. That would solve the backup and upgrade problem, but I still would like to know how to do a proper backup.

Debian Installation :: Installing Stretch Stops At Detecting Network Devices

Oct 11, 2015

Installing stretch stops at detecting network devices. This is an attempt to install stretch over the top of Windows 10 on a Toshiba Radius 15 with 2 each USB2 ports and 2 each USB3 ports, and no RJ-45. Its wireless is based upon the Intel 7265. Just before the presentation of the wireless list, the system reports the need to install non-free:

iwlwifi-7265D-9
iwlwifi-7265D-10
iwlwifi-7265D-11
iwlwifi-7265D-12

and asks for media. Whether I respond yes or no, the driver selection screen comes up. [I have not been able to find those four specific files on the Internet.The network card screen comes up, I select the Intel recommended firmware iwlsifi, but the page just recreates itself and waits for a new selection. If I select either 'none' or 'not listed', the installation fails saying there is no network card.I have obtained from Intel their suggestion as of Aug 2015: iwlwifi-7265-ucode-25.30.14.0.tgz.I placed this on a USB stick in a subdirectory labeled 'firmware'. This was built from Windows 7 on a FAT32 file system.

There is also a Dynadock docking station that connects to the Toshiba via a USB3 cable. Besides video, USB,and audio, this has an Ethernet port. I have tried this connected to the laptop but it also requires a driver. I have placed that driver on the firmware directory of the USB also.

Are the four files listed above somehow inside the iwlwifi driver tgz?Is there a way to get the docking station drive to load so I can use its Ethernet port?

I have used Rufus to build the stretch USB from Windows. I do have a a Linux box I built with the same USB. I would use it but so far, I only have a command line on it and I have not figured out how to access debian.org to download the installation files nor how to put that on the stick.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing 11.04 As Dual Boot With Win7 / Stops After Setting Partition Size

May 5, 2011

I have Windows 7 on my laptop and am attempting to install Ubuntu 11.04 from CD.I boot from the disk drive, follow the prompts and eventually get to the screen where I can set how much space I want to give to the Ubuntu partition vs the Windows partition. My hard disk is 250GB, so I reduce the Windows one to 100GB (currently has 80GB of files on it) and set the Ubuntu one to 130GB (the other 20GB is split between the two hidden Windows 7 partitions).

I then click to continue and the progress bar for the install starts up but doesn't move, it just sits at 0%. I realised that the dialogue box underneath the progress bar can still be expanded and asks me to test using -n and -s, but when I type either of these into the box and hit return, nothing happens. I have checked my download of the .iso I used using WinMD5Sum and the hash matches up. I have already tried installing from USB but this threw an error, hence using CD. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1546 running Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit Processor: AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-75 2.20GHz

General :: Can't Boot After Installing Upgrades

Dec 17, 2010

After fighting with Windows for many years I finally decided to try Linux; still so new at it, I am practically still in the package and just picking my way out.

I have a 1.8Ghz AMD and 6HDDs on an ASRock K8Upgrade Board with 1GB of RAM, running XP Pro. Two of the drives are 500GB SATA drives. I installed Ubuntu10.4 on the first SATA drive (two partitons) and until yesterday it worked just fine.

Yesterday I decided to finally use the update manager to update the system and installed 201+MB of upgrades. Somewhere along the way a window popped up showing my HDDs with check-marks beside the 'C' drive and the 2 SATA drives. I was asked if I wanted to install Grub; I take it that is the boot-loader, on all the drives so, I checked all the drives and then read on. Further down I was told that, putting grub on all the drives would make it unreliable so, I unchecked all the drives but the 2 SATA drives.

Now, when I boot up, I get the option to boot into XP or Ubuntu but, when I choose Ubuntu, the machine just gives me a black screen and reboots endlessly. I suspect, by un-checking the 'C' drive in the above mentioned window, I somehow deleted or incapacitated the boot-loader.

I have lots of instances of Grub in various locations, mostly recycle bins but, are they useful and, what do I do with them? Here is one:

#This file is modified at runtime by bootmenu.nsh
set default=0
echo "$(title1)"
echo "$(title2)"
if sleep --verbose --interruptible 5 ; then
set timeout=0

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Make Upgrades Correctly

Apr 30, 2010

I want to support Ubuntu, and I want Ubuntu to succeed, but..Each of the recent upgrades has been more painful than the last one, and it seems like the same old problems are persisting. In Koala it was the sound cards, and though I've just started my struggles with the newest release, it is very obvious that the server-load problems are still there. Hey, you Ubuntu people don't have to invent BitTorrent technology, you just need to make it the transparent default.

It seems to me that most of the problem is that Ubuntu's economic model is broken. They need more testing for new features, and the model needs to be funded so that the features which are added are tested thoroughly. I suggest that they need a system where we the users put our money where our mouths are, so to speak. We should be allowed to subscribe to a budget for proposed new features, where those budgets included sufficient testing.

Actually, I used to be a professional programmer, but I don't want to program these days, even to help Ubuntu, because I know just how difficult and stressful it is to do program well. However, I'd be willing to put some money out to help improve Ubuntu--but I also want to know just what I'm buying into.

There are various ways this could be done, but here is a link about one version of charity funding I was thinking of a while back. As it applies here, the Ubuntu foundation would act as the charity brokerage, and we would donate by buying charity shares in proposed features (including MORE testing).

Ubuntu Installation :: Unattended-upgrades For Non - Security Updates?

May 25, 2010

I've recently installed the unattended-upgrades package on a few Ubuntu 9.04 servers, and it's working great to automatically install security upgrades. However, is there a way to have non-security upgrades automatically installed as well? The README for unattended-upgrades says it'll do security ones only.

My main goal is to have all package upgrades be installed unattended except for kernel and libc upgrades (I want to do those manually on my own time). I guess I could write a script that does 'apt-show-versions -u' to get a list of upgradable packages and then do 'apt-get install' on the packages if their names don't match linux-server, linux-image-server, or libc*, but I was hoping there's an easier way to accomplish this.

I've looked at 'aptitude safe-upgrade -y', but I think that'll install kernel and libc upgrades.

Ubuntu Installation :: Wordpress Plugin Upgrades Failing?

Jun 3, 2010

I'm not certain that my problem is due to an Ubuntu upgrade, but I'm running out of options.My private Wordpress installation was working fine, including being able to upgrade plugins and WP versions within the application. I've been doing all of the Ubuntu updates as I'm notified. I'm still on 9.10, but was planning to upgrade to 10.04 shortly - as soon as I get the Wordpress installation upgraded in fact.

But the plugin upgrades, and the Wordpress upgrades, are both failing with fopen errors, like so:Download failed. Could not open handle for fopen() to [URL]..After checking everything else I can think of (including temporarily making the wordpress directory hierarchy 777), and looking at the php.ini file, I wonder if some Ubuntu update is messing things up. Or if I've somehow changed something else that is causing the problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unattended Upgrades And 3rd Party Repos

Jul 14, 2010

I have searched on the internet but didn't manage to find out how to flag 3rd party repositories in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/50unattended-upgrades. It installs all updates from the stock Ubuntu repos but none from 3rd party repositories I later added (e.g. Chromium PPA, Skype, etc.). I understand I have to manually add the lines but I'm not sure what's the format for this. How to do this? Here's how my 50unattended-upgrades file looks like:

Code:
// Automatically upgrade packages from these (origin, archive) pairs
Unattended-Upgrade::Allowed-Origins {
"Ubuntu karmic-security";
"Ubuntu karmic-updates"; };

// List of packages to not update
Unattended-Upgrade::Package-Blacklist {
//"vim";
//"libc6";
//"libc6-dev";
//"libc6-i686"; };

// Send email to this address for problems or packages upgrades. If empty or unset then no email is sent, make sure that you have a working mail setup on your system. The package 'mailx' must be installed or anything that provides /usr/bin/mail.
//Unattended-Upgrade::Mail "root@localhost";
// Automatically reboot *WITHOUT CONFIRMATION* if a

Ubuntu Installation :: DPKG - Error Processing Some Upgrades

Aug 20, 2010

I am running Lucid 32-bit server P3 command line server version that began life as a 9.10-server, now upgraded to 10.04. Upgrade has been running since June, 2010. A few weeks ago, I realized that phpldapadmin was not running correctly. In finding the solution for the phpldapadmin issue, now, upgrades are giving me the following:

Code:
admin@myserver:/$ sudo apt-get update[sudo] password for administrator:
Hit [URL]
Get:1 [URL]
Ign [URL]
Ign [URL]

>>>> snip <<<<<
Reading package lists... Done
administrator@wdnserver:/$ sudo apt-get upgrade .....
No apport report written because MaxReports is reached already

Errors were encountered While processing:
grub-pc
samba-common
samba-common-bin
smbclient
smbfs
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I have read many posts trying to find a reference to
Code:
dpkg: error processing grub-pc (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 10
because this started with grub-pc being the first and only package that refused to install. I have yet to find a direct reference to 'error exit status 10'. I find many other status codes, but few of 'status 10'.

Now, unfortunately, work took me away for a few of weeks and now I am getting errors for:
grub-pc
samba-common
samba-common-bin
smbclient
smbfs

I have tried
Code:
apt-get -f install
and that does work.

I have tried
Code:
apt-get purge grub-pc
and then re-installing grub-pc still gives same error.

And finally there are many other attempts, all with the same result.
