Ubuntu Installation :: Unity Launcher Doesn't Hide Itself Anymore / X After Package Upgrades

May 31, 2011

I've upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 some weeks ago and after some minor tweaking everything has been working fine. But all of a sudden, it seems after some package upgrades, I'm experiencing strange behavior: The first thing I noticed is that after reboot the default application that should be kept in the Unity Launcher have all disappeared. The unity launcher doesn't hide itself anymore. The unity launcher does not react to changes I make via the 'System Settings'->'compizConfig settings manager'->'Ubuntu unity plugin' menu (icon sizes in launcher, hiding method, etc.). Even after logout/login or reboot the changes aren't applied, although the corresponding settings in the configuration menus remain changed.

One application that used to work as a charm started giving the following error on startup: The program 'VESTA' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'. (Details: serial 489 error_code 3 request_code 138 minor_code 4) Since yesterday everything was still working properly and today I get this strange behavior, it seems that something must have changed in between. The only changes on the system in the last 24 hours are the upgrades of the following packages:

Ubuntu Installation :: Could Not Download The Upgrades (Size Mismatch)

Jun 19, 2011

I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed and a few weeks ago I tried upgrading to 11.04 using "Update Manager" BUT I got the following error after a few hours of fetching all the files from internet except for one

Code:Could not download the upgrades

The upgrade has aborted. Please check your Internet connection or installation media and try again. All files downloaded so far are kept.

Failed to fetch [URL]

I thought there's something wrong with the internet connection in spite of that everything else works well.. I tried upgrading in different times in different days, I redid the process again today and I got the same error again. Is there any other way to upgrade or ignore this package?

Ubuntu Installation :: DPKG - Error Processing Some Upgrades

Aug 20, 2010

I am running Lucid 32-bit server P3 command line server version that began life as a 9.10-server, now upgraded to 10.04. Upgrade has been running since June, 2010. A few weeks ago, I realized that phpldapadmin was not running correctly. In finding the solution for the phpldapadmin issue, now, upgrades are giving me the following:

Code:
admin@myserver:/$ sudo apt-get update[sudo] password for administrator:
Hit [URL]
Get:1 [URL]
Ign [URL]
Ign [URL]

>>>> snip <<<<<
Reading package lists... Done
administrator@wdnserver:/$ sudo apt-get upgrade .....
No apport report written because MaxReports is reached already

Errors were encountered While processing:
grub-pc
samba-common
samba-common-bin
smbclient
smbfs
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I have read many posts trying to find a reference to
Code:
dpkg: error processing grub-pc (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 10
because this started with grub-pc being the first and only package that refused to install. I have yet to find a direct reference to 'error exit status 10'. I find many other status codes, but few of 'status 10'.

Now, unfortunately, work took me away for a few of weeks and now I am getting errors for:
grub-pc
samba-common
samba-common-bin
smbclient
smbfs

I have tried
Code:
apt-get -f install
and that does work.

I have tried
Code:
apt-get purge grub-pc
and then re-installing grub-pc still gives same error.

And finally there are many other attempts, all with the same result.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot Into Newest Kernel After Upgrades

May 14, 2011

this is a new problem with issues that started when I upgraded to 10.10. Originally, GRUB wouldn't load after that upgrade, but that was fixed here. Once GRUB was working properly, there was a problem with the 2.6.35-28 generic kernel. When I tried to boot through it, I would only get an ubuntu command line.

Luckily the older 2.6.32-22 generic kernel worked just fine and I could log in and load my ubuntu desktop with no issues. I decided to upgrade to 11.04 to see if that would correct whatever was going on. The installation was completed without any apparent issues, GRUB works, XP Pro works, and the older 2.6.32-22 generic kernel allows me to boot into 11.04.

Unfortunately, another new kernel, 2.6.38-8 generic, is not working properly. I snaped some pictures of what happens when I try to use this kernel:

[URL]

The first is GRUB/ The selection The second is the loading graphic The third is a command line where it freezes (note: this is not the same command line screen/environment that I was referring to with the 10.10 new kernel)

Ubuntu Installation :: Download The Update And Then The Others To Download From The Local Resource

Aug 2, 2010

Here at home I have several Ubuntu installations, mine, the kids computers and a couple of laptops. What I'm looking for is a solution or a pointer in the right direction to setup on our local Ubuntu server a sort of cache. Each day each Ubuntu on the network, checks for updates and downloads, and installs. What I'm looking for is a way for one machine to download the update and then the others to download from the local resource.

A sort of local cache to try and minimise everyone downloading straight from the net for pretty much the same updates. I did a emerge cache many years ago when I was using Gentoo, so I'm wondering what I can use/do here with Ubuntu as we are all loving this distro now.

Ubuntu :: Can't Boot Lucid LTS Anymore - Automount Error For Data Partition; / Is Md0

Apr 15, 2011

My Lucid LTS Ubuntu Studio 64 (amd) won't boot anymore; / and /home each are software raid 0 partitions.

I have a Multimedia partition (also ext 4) which I attempted to chmod with a GUI program (I forget what its called now) to enable all users read/write access. Looks like I inadvertently fstabed that partition to be mounted at boot-time (normally my password was required in order to mount it).

I tried to logging out and back into my OS to see if the partition was now writable but it wasen't; instead a filesystem error was noted. I realised then that my partition was IMPROPERLY labelled and I was in a tired state and didn't remember how to rename it & rebooted to make sure all was ok. But it was not:

An error occured when mounting /media/Ubuntu unknown filesystem type "Multimedia"

Boot: recovering journal

From my generic Ubuntu system on a non raid partition, I finally removed the space in the 'offending' partition: Ubuntu Multimedia to UbuntuMultimedia. And I changed the permissions for it.

But if I try to boot Ubuntu Studio via recovery; booting in low res is unusable, and it gets stuck if I SKIP mounting. So I am left with manual boot or drop to a shell. I will have to use an editor like vi or nano and the command prompt. I know that I likely only have to comment out a line in etc/fstab but I am only familiar with nautilus or gedit for this type of operation. And since this OS is on a raid partition its not 'seen' on the live CD....

I would need someone to offer me clear steps to follow with the non gui editors otherwise I'm in trouble...

I just wanted to use that partition for video editing and now I am locked out of my system!

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot - Win7 Not Being Able To Boot Anymore

Apr 29, 2011

So we install Windows 7 home premium. Then in goes the Ubuntu Disk. Ubuntu seems to think that the windows 7 partition is one big lump of unallocated space. Tried multiple re-installs of Windows 7, all concluding the same. A bit of googling told me that it has something to do with partition tables or something. I even tried to use Gdisk to delete Gpt from the windows disk, which - as I have absolutely no idea what any of it means, - resulted in me screwing up the entire Win7 partition hence win7 not being able to boot anymore.

i've seen on the internet include a lot of technical garble which I don't understand. I've been using Linux for a while, but as far as partitioning and dual booting is concerned, it's always gone smoothly for me up until now

I restarted the PC, and started the update manager again. But now it does not show any option of update to 10.4. how do I continue or resume the update process? I just started using ubuntu about 15 days back. So, I am relatively new to this.

But I need to run "update-grub" and it comes back with an error to the effect that it 'can't find a device for / (is /dev mounted?)Also, the boot menu only has ubuntu - no sign of windows in my intended dual-boot. OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 Update Error: Failed To Download From Repositories

Feb 22, 2010

The red updater icon alerted me to about a dozen patches, which started to install, then halted with an error: Download failure from download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.2/repo/non-oss. When I try to update repositories, the same error recurs for that repo and also for .../oss and download.opensuse.org/update/11.2/,

If I attempt to "register for support to get update repository," clicking on Configure Now and Next produces the same three error messages: "Failed to download", one for each repository. The screen then returns to Registration, with another error message "an error occurred while connecting to the server". Clicking on the Detail button show exactly "ERROR:"

This AMD desktop machine with this install of 11.2 has updated many times in the last few weeks. Has something changed? The update servers do respond to a ping, so they are up and apparently I have connectivity.
