CentOS 5 :: Upgrading From 5.5 To 5.6 - Conflicts With File Error
May 13, 2010
I issued "yum update" and the process ended with a transaction check error(see below).
Running rpm_check_debug
Running Transaction Test
Finished Transaction Test
Transaction Check Error:

I installed Oracle Database on this server few months ago. I see in /etc/yum.repos.d directory a public-yum-el5.repo file with entries pointing to Oracle which must have come from that installation. Now how do I proceed from here?

I've been trying to upgrade my installation for some time now and just can't quite get it right. I would upgrade from the DVD but the installer hangs when it says "Looking for installation images on CD device /dev/sr0". However, that's not really my question. I've resorted to the upgrade instructions as found at [URL]. If I don't use the '--skip-broken' option it complains about the following:
abrt-gui-0.0.11-1.fc12.x86_64 from fedora
abrt-libs-1.0.6-1.fc12.x86_64 from updates
samba-3.4.5-55.fc12.x86_64 from updates
samba-client-3.4.5-55.fc12.x86_64 from updates
samba-common-3.4.5-55.fc12.x86_64 from updates
samba-winbind-3.4.5-55.fc12.x86_64 from updates
samba-winbind-clients-3.4.5-55.fc12.x86_64 from updates
If I use the skip broken option, it then complains about:
Transaction Check Error:
file /usr/share/locale/de/LC_MESSAGES/cryptsetup.mo from install of cryptsetup-luks-1.1.0-0.4.fc12.x86_64 conflicts with file from package cryptsetup-luks-1.0.6-7.fc11.i586

file /usr/share/man/man8/cryptsetup.8.gz from install of cryptsetup-luks-1.1.0-0.4.fc12.x86_64 conflicts with file from package cryptsetup-luks-1.0.6-7.fc11.i586
I can't seem to remedy this problem. There were other conflicts but I just removed those packages. When I attempt to remove 'cryptsetup-luks' it then tells me it's going to remove something like 200 others which did not sound like a good idea.

After preupgrading without problems, I did not reboot the computer inmediatly. I was surprised that, although preupgrade had finished, the terminal window was yet active and I closed it. On reboot, in the Grub window, one of the options is "Actualizar a (upgrade to) Fedora 14". If I select it I get: "Booting 'Actualizar a Fedora 14 (Laughlin)'
kernel /upgrade/vmlinuz preupgrade repo=hd::/var/cache/yum/preupgrade ks=hd:UUID=02f7302b-aa56-4c33-b533- fa1549aa0860:/upgrade/ks.cfg stage2=hd:UUID=02f7302b-aa56-4c33-b533-fa1549aa0860:/upgrade/install.img initrd /upgrade/initrd.img
Error 15: File not found
Press any key to continue....."
and pressing a key it returns to the Grub window. The /upgrade directory doesn't exist, but it does the /boot/upgrade where the vmlinuz is. uninstall and reinstall the preupgrade, rebooting inmediatly, but I don't know how to uninstall and if this is the solution. How can I uninstall the preupgrade?

I've recently installed cacti on one of my servers and grimaced a bit when I had to install additional third-party yum repositories for CentOS 6. My question is, how does one go about preventing potential conflicts with certain dependencies overwriting key/critical dependencies relied upon from packages that might share them, i.e. apache? I understand yum priorities and have read the discussions regarding pros/cons from the threads involving one of the YUM maintainers. Since I need my servers to act as production-class equipment and, hence, be as reliable as they can, I'm always hesitant to allow yum to automate package upgrades when third-party repos are involved. How best to handle this?

After restoring from a hardware failure, I cannot get bridging to work again. I reinstalled the host version 5.5, and copied the .img file back onto the rebuilt machine. I also had the network scripts and iptables backed up. I have inherited our Linux packaging and as the number of versions increase, the number of conflicts is starting to get a bit unmanageable. I believe the easiest way would have been to keep the package names the same and just change the release in the spec file but unfortunately I am past that as a lot of these packages are rolled out to our estate. (I am told there were reasons for not keeping the package name the same and incrementing the version/release)
Is it possible to wildcard conflicts so I don't need to keep adding as new versions are created. For example, instead of using all the conflicts below, have something along the lines of AAtest45* <= 1.4 & BBtest45* <= 1.4 Meaning that all I would need to do was change this to 1.5 at the next release (the packages below version matched the release in the spec file)

I have just done a reinstall of Centos 5.3 on a dedicated server (via a KVM). My partition arrangement was the default presented to me by the installer:
As you can see, I'm using LVM for everything other than /boot (I need to use LVM for an app I am testing).
On reboot, I get the following:
[QUOTE]
It looks like it can't find vmlinuz-2.6.18-128.el5 in /boot.
I have rebooted using the Centos Install Disk 1 and gone in to rescue mode. Rescue mode mounted my / under /mnt/sysimage, from there I could see that /boot had been mounted from /dev/sda1 as it should be.
However, there was no initrd.image or /vmlinuz-2.6.18-128.el5 under /boot or /boot/grub. Shouldn't the CentOS installer have created these?
Is there anyway I can recover this installation?

From command prompt how can I give the user test root access in the /var/www/html with all the folders, sub folders and files in one shut?

I am getting a strange font problem (see attached screenshot) for a user logging in over VNC Server, I am also logged in over VNC however I am no experiancing any problems... This was the case on CentOS 5.3 and on 5.4. I have tried removing the .vnc dir in the users home dir and re running vncserver so that it recreates it, I found this in the logs:
1. (nautilus:14718): Pango-WARNING **: No builtin or dynamically
2.loaded modules were found. Pango will not work correctly.
3.This probably means there was an error in the creation of:
4.'/etc/pango/pango.modules'
5. You should create this file by running pango-querymodules.

I have been using Centos on a VPS for about a year and love the speed and simplicity. So, I would like to convert my home computer to Centos 5.5 Currently, the computer is running Ubuntu 10.4 x64. The drive has 3 partitions (a main partition that I would want to format and install the Centos Base), a swap partition which can be formatted and used as is and a third partition that boots to /home.
I have a few concerns: 1-If I edit the third partition in the Centos install as "boot to /home," Will everything (theoretically) work? The only applications that concern me are E-Mail (evolution) and OpenOffice. I know that Centos 5.5 uses Evolution 2.1.x and Ubuntu uses 2.2.x but just shouldn't be too much of a problem. (I can copy the mail folders from a backup to the .evolution directory.)
2-My /home partition uses ext4. Is using this on Centos 5.5 "looking for trouble"?

Is i possible to upgrade from a point release, like 5.3, to another point release, like 5.4, using yum ? Or, even if it is possible, is it better to just do an install of 5.4 and choose the upgrade option on top of my 5.3 installation ?
