On a cold start-up or after some package installations on re-start I get this message:
"The disk drive for /home is not ready yet or not present".
My disk partitions are:
Swap - 4 gig
/ - 25 gig
/home - remainder of 120 gig drive. about 96 gig
Last error: Installed the numlockx package and made the modification to .../init/Default.
Error on Cold start this AM.
I tried to upgrade to the newest ubuntu version (10.04 I think). Now I can't even boot my computer. After the initial "boot" stuff, the ubuntu screen comes on and then locks up in the process. I get the message "The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present. Continue to wait; or press s to skip mounting or M for manual recovery."I've tried "waiting" overnight to no avail. I think the manual recovery is what I need to do. When I type the "M" for manual recovery I get a maintenance shell with the last line being.Can anyone please give me some commands to fix this problem? I have an OLD ubuntu boot disk. How can I get my computer to boot from it? I tried hitting "esc" while booting up to no avail. I also tried hitting F1 while booting up. I think that used to allow me to boot from the CD drive...but doesn't work now.
I upgraded my computer from Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04 and now the OS doesn't boot correctly. I keep getting the same error msg after selecting Ubuntu from the grub: 'The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present.' Underneath that line is the other msg: 'Continue to wait; press S to skip or M for manual recovery.'

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install 10.10 from a Live CD over my 9.04 (it would not do the upgrade automatically due to apparently lack of disk space.) at the end of the my best guess at the process (alas, Linux is pretty much a plug and pray operation for me.), on rebooting, I get the message: "the disk drive for / is not ready yet or not yet present" I must have messed up at the Allocate Drive SPace / Edit Partition step. I have three existing partitions:
7Gb for OS previously 9.04
35GB for data (which I clearly don't want to mess with)
a a bit for Swap.
So, I have clicked on the 7GB partition /dev/sda1 and have another window, Edit Partition, which is asking me: New partition size (I would just leave it at 7007) Use As (I presume I can leave it as EXT4?) Format the Partition (NO unchecked?)and Mount Point? Now here is where I don't have a clue. The pull down options are:
/, /home, /boot, /tmp, /usr, /var, etc.

Use a non-graphical editor, like emacs or vi. Try Ctl+Alt+F3 -- you should get a login prompt. Login to an account with admin privileges (like, the first account you created, for example), and then type 'sudo vi /etc/fstab'; that will open /etc/fstab in the vi editor. Make your changes, save them, exit the editor, reboot... but if you're not used to working with a non-graphics-based editor, you'll have a bit of research to do. On rebooting or initial start up intermittent problem:"The disk drive for /home is ready yet or not present." It seems to happen on a cold startup and if a change is made in init/default file. (addition of the numlockx package modifcation.) So far a second or third restart will find the directory and complete the start-up.
On a 120 gig hard drive I have these partitions:
4 gig swap
25 gig /
90+ gig (the remaining space) /home
I have a music server running on Ubuntu10.04.
The mainboard is a Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UD5P [URL].
Problem #1: Approx. four out of five times my dvd-rw is not available to the system. If I wish to burn a cdrom, the computer has to be restarted three or four times before the dvd-rw is available. But then it always works without a flaw.
Problem #2: This morning after booting, the system started and displayed a message: "Disk sdf is not ready for mounting, press S to skip or M to fix the problem" I pressed M and edited /etc/fstab, then continued to start-up. Then I started Disk Utility. The harddisk sdf is clearly visible: it's a Samsung HD642JJ and according to three different Smart tests the disk is healthy. But the harddisk is completely absent in the rest of the system. The blkid command does not report sdf, and 'fdisk -l' does not print anything about sdf.
As far as I have been able to test the hardware is healthy. All connections are in good condition, there are no loose connectors. So after thinking about these problems I have a suspicion towards hald and/or the enumerator. I have attached the dmesg output.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a security cam watched by a computer with Motion. on that computer i use hdparm -S 240 /dev/hdb to stop the harddrive where the pictures go from running when not used (witch is usually 2 days in a row). Now when motion is detected, the first 3 or 4 pictures are saved, and then there is a pauze for about 5 sec. before the next picture. This has to do with the hard-disk spinning up (I tried without), but I don't understand why not more pictures are held in memory until the disk is ready. how to solve this without having the disk running all days?, or what i should start reading

This is on an old desktop system (1999-ish)with a 20Gb hard drive on which I had installed Linux distro. called BasicLinux 3.0.
The HDD was partitioned into 3 primary, 1 extended, and a swap.
I have lost total access to the drive. Nothing will report anything except the error as in post subject:
hda: drive not ready for command.
fdisk, e2fsck, badblocks, all give this error message plus a lot of other messages such as:
ide0: reset: success
hda: status timeout: status= 0xd1 (busy)
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:00 (hda)sector 0
ONLY thing that shows anything is:

System did boot from CD into PuppyLinux once, but now will not boot into any Distro., but does "start" to boot, ie, first screen of distro. and then nothing, system hangs.
I'm running 32-bit Debian Squeeze (2.6.32-5-686) on an old IBM TinkCentre piece-meal system that runs great otherwise. I have a LITEON iHAS424 Burner attached. As soon as I insert any disk (CD, DVD, Blank, Commercial, etc.) the system either locks up entirely or crawls to a near stop. The drive is about 3-4 months old and I've experienced the problem a couple of times in the past but just about every time I try to use it lately. The CD/DVD drive seems to work fine on other systems, but I haven't had the luxury of leaving in for any length of time to be 100% sure.
I have been able to pull out of the problem in the past by opening up the case and disconnecting/reconnecting both ends of the drive cable, but this doesn't always work and never "feels right" as a fix.Here is what I think are the significant portions of my messages log file:Quote:

Recently we started getting these errors in syslog:

Also the machine was under very high load and almost impossible to connect to.
I've searched, and found mostly answers involving broken hard disks or other hardware issues, but this is unlikely to be the case here: it started happening on several machines at the same time. They are HP DL580G5, and hda is the DVD player. It's not being used. The only thing we've recently changed is that we installed HAL (as a dependency of pcscd), and sure enough, killing HAL freed up the cpu and stopped the stream of errors. Sadly, pcscd requires HAL..
Has anyone seen this? Are there known problems with HAL in Lenny on HP hardware? I know I could do hal-disable-polling /dev/hda but I don't want to simply ignore a potential problem.
EDIT: versions used are HAL 0.5.11-8, pcscd 1.4.102-1 and kernel 2.6.26.2-amd64

View 3 Replies View RelatedI bought a new hard drive recently and I managed to drop it. Put it into the computer, used it for a day, all went fine. Now today, it has started giving out an intermittent, clearly audible rattle that will last for a few seconds at most; there doesn't appear to be much of a pattern to it, sometimes the drive keeps quiet for an hour, then it does it twice within a minute or five. FWIW, the drive was still in its plastic box when it hit the floor so that must have softened the blow. There is no visible damage to the drive although the plastic box was dented on one corner. Still, what do you reckon are the odds that it will die any time soon?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI just installed Debian onto a PowerPC G4 Tower with two hard drives. I left OS X on one of the drives and reformatted and installed Debian on the other, using the installer from the 60Mb ISO from the Debian website.
The installation had no issues and it starts yaboot and Debian no problem.
After about 2 minutes of the booting up process, it starts to output this, every five seconds:
While this happens, other things still continue load and it outputs occasional messages and even gets to "Debian Login:" where if you type really quickly and hit enter, it takes it and prompts for "Password:" right after the next round of the above messages.
I have not been able to completely log in yet.
I can start up into the shell as root with "Linux single" with no problems.
I think this might have something to do with the second Mac OS Formatted Hard drive. I have considered unplugging that drive and testing it that way, but I am looking for a solution to turn off whatever script is running that every five seconds and failing, regardless of what it is trying to do.
I had Windows 7 RC installed and F10 on the same machine. HP 6730s Intel Dual Core. Everything was working fine and I don't remember doing anything special when installing Fedora 10. I decided to install F11 from DVD, installation went fine but after rebooting all I get is "non-system disk error or disk error. replace and strike any key when ready". I couldn't find any relevant post in this forum and googling I found that this could be a disk starting to fail but I don't thing this is the case here. I'm trying to reinstall just now, I chose to install grub at /dev/sda (default), should it be /dev/sda1 ?

View 2 Replies View RelatedOk so basically this isn't my harddrive but hear me out. It's a known issue but it only happened after him downloading stuff off priate bay. The harddrive is not detected on BIOS, so you can't boot through it, just the CD Drive is now detected. You can't use SAFE mode as it reverts to another issue, a black screen with a white cursor, no keyboard commands work.
No restoring disks will fix it nor master disks, it's literally a bad *** issue. Thou I can still load things via CD Drive so I used the Acronis Bootable Media and surely enough, it could anaylse data on the harddrives. I thought maybe i'll try PE Bart but once again, loads up to Black screen with White Cursor. So I put in Ubuntu and yes, I can get on the GUI, but I can't install the operating system.
There would always been an issue. something about in/out whilst installing but as long a I can use the tools, then we go onto Disk Utility. When I try to format, the Error Message apprears stating : Eroor creating File System: helped exited with error code 1: Error calling fsync(2) on /dev/sda2: Input/Output error. This would be the same error i would get via installing and I would have to ignore and eventually whilst installing, from being complete on the right hand side, it would say ERROR or ABORTED after 70,000.

Everything was fine for the first 6 months. Now in the past couple weeks, my disk drive is running nearly constantly. I can hear it rattling away in the background no matter what I am doing. Typically, I just have Firefox open, and that disk drive is sounding like it's writing the whole thing over and over.
I've opened the system monitor and looked for something obvious, but everything says, "sleeping". The computer seems to operate fine - no crashes, no odd behavior. What's this thing doing?
Why do i have trouble opening my dvd drive When there is no disk in it is there a setting i have wrong or is it my dvd is packing up it plays well and copies every thing i put at it, opens when i have disk in it but not when no disk in.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've tried installing UNR on a 1GB flash drive in the past, and on two occasions it completely broke due to lack of disk space. When I say broke, it was when I was trying to install or upgrade packages, it said it ran out of disk space, everything slowed right down, and in the end I had to restart. I was put into a recovery shell and after poking around for about 30 minutes, gave up. Then reinstalled.
Now my shiny new 4GB flash drive is split into two sections, one for documents (1.9GB) and one for the installation+persistency file (1.9GB). I went about updating the UNR system, adding software I need (some of which is quite big, anti-virus software, lyx etc), and quickly found the old warning message: disk space low. hastily make some free space (apt-get clean, delete a big firefox cache), and post this message. My questions:how do I find out how much disk space is left on this 1.9GB partition - specifically the persistency file? I've tried disk usage analyzer, also du -h, but can't really understand it. I want to be able to see ahead of time when I am short of disk space. I would like to switch to using XFCE instead of gnome for speed and disk space. Is this possible? What is the best way to switch, without risking maxing-out disk space and crippling the system again? is there are way to take a snapshot of the whole partition? I would like to back it up in case it goes haywire again. Would I just want to copy the persistency file, that's it?
Is it possible to allocate more disk space to WINE's c: drive?

I currently am dual-booting Lucid Lynx and Windows 7, and rather than go through the process of reinstalling both, then reinstalling all my programs, settings, and everything, I was wondering if there's a way I can just copy the partitions on my 175 GB disk to the new one, grow them to fill up the rest of the free space on the new 2 TB disk, and then plug that HD into the primary master plug on my motherboard... will that work?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to run You Don't Know Jack in wine - appdb says it has Platinum status, so compatibility shouldn't be the issue. My laptop doesn't have an optical disk drive. So, I ripped the disk to an iso image, mounted it with gmount-iso, and tried to open the program.
The program still says the disk is not inserted. I know on previous laptops with optical drives, I could mount an image on /dev/cdrom0 or /dev/sr0 or whatever and it would be recognized. My /dev directory had no cdrom0 directory, so I made one. I mounted the iso there but it still didn't recognize it. I've tried in my home folder, in /cdrom, and in my newly-created /dev/cdrom0 but no luck.
At the Ubuntu.ork front page, it promises:

What exactly is meant my this? Does this mean it is an easier way to install the dual boot with Windows? (I am using Windows-7 on a new PC.) Or does it mean it will install Ubuntu under Windows? I assumed it meant the latter.
In any case, I downloaded it - a mere 1024K, scanned it and ran it. I get a stubborn error box with the message:

And that box will not go away - no matter what I press, including the [X] button in the upper corner, the box reappears. I had to go into Process Explorer to kill pyrun.exe and its parent, pyl5E39.tmp.exe before the [Cancel] button would close it for good.
I could not find doc on this so I don't know what it really wants as a prerequisite to running wubi.
