While seeking the solution of the problem I have also installed some packages from wheezy (xserver-xorg-video-radeon, xserver-xorg-video-ati, libdrm2) and sid (libgl1-mesa-dri).

there I turned on my Visual Effects to Extra or Normal and when I do that both the top and bottom taskbar goes away. The only way I can get them back is to turn visual effects off. Does anyone know how I can fix this issue?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI was hoping someone could tell me how to turn off the basic windows effects in compiz but keep it turned on so I can use something like Docky.
The reason is because nautilus takes a few painful seconds to open up with the effects turned on and some times I end up clicking a folder etc a second time thinking it hasn't opened.
I'm using Kwin desktop effects. I turn on some desktop effects and it worksbut after I reboot my PC, the desktop effects does not turn on automatically.I always need to turn it on again. I always resume the compositing every restart.Also, I can't find all the effects in kwin. I can only adjust the basic effects (the first tab) but when I tried to go to the all effects tab (the second tab) it is empty.

I deselect "enable desktop effects," absolutely nothing happens as a result.
I tried tricking it by checking enable again than when it offers that 10 seconds to keep the settings, chosing not to, and desktop effects shut off finally but within 2-5 seconds reactivate.
It's as if posessed. Howcome it is unresponsive to turning off??? and turns on by itself??
i just installed opensuse 11.3 (after being on Mint for couple of years) and really impressed with stability compared to latest Mint 9/Ubuntu10.04.the only issue I have now is I can't turn on desktop effects neither in KDE nor in Gnome.In gnome i can't change compiz seetings at all - the windows freezes after i try to click on 'Enable desktop effects', and that's it. It worked fairly well in ubuntu though.

It has taken a while for me to find my way around and I am still trying to change settings so that VLC is default multimedia app rather than Amarok or similar. how to turn off the jerky dimming effect which was being applied when I close a window. Out of interest does anybody know what memory and cpu overhead these effect costs and how many lines of code? More to the point does anybody know who needs them?
When using Dolphin with column view does anybody know how to have the left margin shown rather than the right. As it is now, with long files names, the right hand end of the filename is shown and to see the directories I have to use a slider to scroll back to the left. I do not recall this being the case before. It used to be that the long file name was cut off unless one scrolled. In that way you could see all the directories and when moving files life was simple. Now this is not the case and actions take longer.
I'm running Karmic on an Acer Aspire AO751h and very aware of the issues regarding the GMA500 ans psb drivers, and after reading all the forums I've finally accomplished to make it work just fine. Last week it performed an update via the update manager and since then I haven't been able to restore/run any of the compiz settings and found out that the problem is that it doesn't let me turn on my visual effects under the appearance settings. When I attempt to set them as normal or extra, it starts "searching for available drivers" then the screen blinks several times, goes black, hides every window and just shows me my desktop background and then come back again and displays "Desktop effects could not be enabled". As I mentioned before, Compiz was running fine and I had no issues with the visual effects prior to the last update perfomed a week ago. Can you help me please?? If you need further information I'll be more than glad to provide them tou you, this is driving me nuts!

When I start it up the screen flickers from being on and off, it then finally stops at being on but nothing shows up. Please help. My graphics card is nVidia G210M. Sony Vaio.

My hardware in my computer isn't that bad, but my graphics card is pretty old. I'm using the "radeon" driver because my card is an ATIx700 Pro. The proprietary driver won't work. The question I have is: Where are the Desktop Effects?Even with my "radeon" driver, It is able to run. I've had it on Suse and Fedora.

well I install the printer, everything works perfectly.....but, when I turn off the PC, and turn it on again, the printer does NOT work!, I send work for being printed but mothing happens , Ubuntu tells me that the job was printed but ... no case, my printer does not print it.
I have to install it again since cero. what can I don to stop install it every time I turn off the computer ?
When turn off the computer he is half-second off, and then immediately the same turn himself again. Such problems with Lenny, OpenSolaris 2009.06, Windows and Ubuntu 9.04 was not. Noticed on Debian 6.0, Ubuntu 10.04 and above, OpenSUSE 11.4. And only on my computer. How do I fix this?

I have installed numlockx. Works fine in terms of turning Num Lock on automatically before the login screen. However, once logged in, Num Lock is automatically turned off. Is there a setting in Debian that I am missing so that Num Lock stays on all the time?
PS: Yes, I've turned on the Num Lock option in the BIOS!
I want to remove GDM altogether, naturally I tried:
sudo apt-get --purge remove gdm3
But it appears to be taking some lower level gnome libraries down with it. As soon as it's removed, I can no longer start gedit or gnome terminal for example. If either is run from the terminal, I see, "Cannot display" or something along those lines. I end up reinstalling gdm3 and everything works perfectly.I already used update-rc to stop the gdm daemon from booting altogether, I just want to remove it now for a greater sense of cleanliness I guess.

So, possible to disable it without negative effects? If so how to do that? The only problems I've had relating to Gnome have been Evolution. I'll just copy email links and paste them in Gmail.

I have Lenny installed on an Imac G4, running command line only. It's primary purpose will be SSH.
I would like to know how I can turn off the screen when I'm not using it. It will be left on running other things for periods of time, and I want to save power. (and the screen)
Since the screen is built-in, it might have a similar solution to what I would do with a laptop. On the other hand, there are no shortcut keys to dim the screen like on a laptop.
Because it is command line mode only, I will need to know what commands to use to dim or shut off the screen, or to configure an auto-off time limit.

After messing around with it a bit I've encountered a couple problems.The first is that Jokosher doesn't seem to remember the audio input device I selected the last time I used it. This may seem like a minor complaint, but I like to use my computer sort of like a tape recorder - that is, I use it to jot down quick musical ideas for later reference. With Garageband my internal mic is automatically selected, so all I have to do is press record. With Jokosher, however, I have to select the input I want to use every time I open the program. This, to me, kinda defeats the purpose of using a computer as a quick note-taking tool. Is there any way to set a default audio device for Jokosher to use, or to somehow make it remember which device I selected the last time?
The second is that I don't know how to install effects for this program. When I press the "effects" button it tells me that I need to install LADSPA-compatible effects myself. I've done a little bit of googling and still I can't figure out how to do this or which effects I should get.
im using the ubuntu distro and when i goto the visual effects tab and click on normal or extra, it says "desktop effects could not be enabled" also, i have Two hdd's, a 100GB that has windows 7 and ubuntu. and a 250GB that has Windows XP. GRUB didnt notice windows xp though, so its not a boot option.

Actually when I'm receiving a video call it works, but I cannot initiate a video call.Then I installed libv4l-0 package (which has been installed to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l) and found here URL...) that I have to do something with this Code: Select allLD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /usr/bin/skype in order to make video calling work. I went thought some results on google but I couldn't find any hint. Probably it's very simple to do with this I cannot get.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI initially installed Debian Lenny on my system but couldn't get sound to work so I upgraded to squeeze hoping that the newer kernel would somehow fix that. Unfortunately, the update caused the screen to flash on and off starting at the login screen - I'd get a split second with the screen on and then it would go off for a second or two. The boot screen still allows me to boot from Lenny's linux kernel, and that still works. I also had this problem when I installed ubuntu on this computer so after some searching around I remembered that adding radeon.modeset=0 as a boot option fixed this. Now the screen no longer flashes, but everything is really slow - I think that disabled graphics acceleration? After some searching around it seems that these problems are probably caused by something called KMS in newer linux kernels but I don't really know.
Anyway, does anyone have any ideas as to how I could turn on graphics acceleration again without having the screen flashing on and off? Or suggestions for making sound work? I think in the past (on ubuntu) I ended up having to enable the proprietary graphics driver, but on the other linux distros i've tried I used proprietary graphics and flash and my computer got slower and slower and started to crash, so I'd rather stick to the open source driver if possible - i don't need really need 3d acceleration. Stability is the reason I switched to debian. My computer is running Debian squeeze amd64, intel core 2 duo e8400, ati radeon 4830, 4 gigs of ram. relevant results from lspci: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller. 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV770 LE [Radeon HD 4800 Series] 01:00.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc HD48x0 audio maybe part of the audio problem is that there are two audio devices listed?
My system goes through slow periods where it just crawls and others where it's fine, but I'm wondering which service settings are OK to just shut off to give me a bit more oomph when I boot up.The others I'm pretty OK with like spam assassin, dictionary server and so on, but some of the others i wonder if they only serve to slow things down..Also..I live in a very dusty environment and I KNOW the fans and other parts get caked with dust and it wouldn't surprise me if the dust got so bad it just stops the fans completely so once in a while I use my air compressor to blow the crud out and I usually get covered myself, but how safe is using the compressor? It's not the type that typically fills up with condensed water droplets so that isn't a super critical issue..It's a small 1 hp deal, elect drive and so on.. Safe enough? It's all I have and/or can afford..
