I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.4 on an old Emachine. I use a flash drive to install on an old laptop and it worked fine. The Emachine will not recognize the flash drive untill after windows loads and I have burnt the same file to a CD and it will not load. I burned that iso file to cd and the lowest speed.

Have tried to boot up this emachine with the (either) dvd in the drive and made sure dvd is first in boot up sequence yet all that happens is Windows loads.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am very new to Linux and Fedora. I installed newest Fedora to a friend's Acer emachine E725 but the wireless does not work. Originally it had a Moblin linux installed on it but my friend does not speak English so I had to install for her a Hungarian version linux. Fedora seems to be quite user friendly but this wireless problem makes me worry. The wireless was working perfectly on Moblin, the wireless manager showed all available wifi connections and I could chose the desired one and the laptop connected to it. Unfortunately on Fedora and other Linux distributions this does not work. This laptop has a hardware button to switch the wireless On and Off but under Fedora it does not function.

A friend loaded linux onto my eMachine netbook. Unfortunately the touch pad and WiFi refuse to work. He loaded it into a 40gb partition leaving 120gb unusable so it would probably make sense to start all over again. I only need basic txt software, pics and internet to work so I am not looking for state of the art. Just something that will work, is not too difficult to set up and preferably can be loaded from a pen drive (memory stick). Any suggestions? The "distro" as I understand it is Kubuntu. Not sure what version but I will have a look later.

I had to fight to get it to install kept freezing and stopping. I finally got it installed. It runs fine and is fast. I like it alot and then after about 5 to 10 min. The screen locks up or will distort in multicolor stripes across the screen. I cant figure out whats going on!
I did just notice that the specs say it's a 64bit possessor and I'm running the 32bit ubuntu will that make a difference?
Anyone know if Centos 5 will run on this eMachine? I want to use it as a home webserver and run my blog off of it.

i have a backtrack install that i would like to keep while installing suse for an everyday OS; i start the install process but when it gets to partitioning the hard drive, it doesnt seem to recognize anything already being on there; it just gives me the setup for suse, ie:
sda1 ext3 = OS sda2 or sda5 = swap. do i have to configure a partition scheme? i installed ubuntu on a desktop alongside windows very easily due to grub graphical install/partition; is there not a similar function for suse?
I have an apparently stable installation of Xubuntu that I've hand-tweaked in a few ways. I'd like to be able to reinstall this system verbatim on this machine should a disk crash happen, etc.Is there a "standard" method to create an install and/or total-backup CD that would be an instantiation of the currently-installed-and-modified system?

The network connection is an Xircom PCMCIA card.During install, the computer sees and interacts via the network just fine. For example, I can ping the gateway. Also, the command "lspcmcia" works and show the Xircom card.When I reboot, however, there is no network access, and the "lspcmcia" command is not there. When I try "lspcmcia" the OS helpfully tells me that I can "apt-get" pcmciautils, but, without network access, that fails.I tried adding the install cdrom to apt using "apt-cdrom" and then tried to "apt-get" pcmciautils and it got further, installing some dependencies, but acted like it still was unable to locate the pcmciautils package.

I had a brief play with an older version a while ago and liked whatI saw.Im having problems installing though.I've downloaded the 32bit version from the studio website link, and burnt the DVD.However the install always fails at the same stage: Select and install software.The error message is not specific, and no more information is given other than the step has failed.Any ideas what could be causing this? Then, I quited with Ctrl+ c, and I did not care much till today because when I want install something else today, the error keeps coming out. Therefore, I think I would better remove dict-xdict first, so I use sudo apt-get remove dict-xdict, but the error still appears:

Toward the end of installing Ubuntu 10.10 32bit (Alt CD) on my iMac 11,1, the installer asked me to type in the location for installing the grub boot loader.
I told it to use /dev/sda3 and it immediately failed. I'm still in the installer. Can anyone suggest a solution?

I'm trying to migrate from Ubuntu to OpenSUSE but for some reason I can't get the install to work. I've tried installing the GNOME live CD both from a CD and a USB but after I select installation it goes to the loading screen for a few seconds and then the screen goes black and it stays like that till I reboot. Is it a problem with my hardware or something or did something miss-write when I burned the CD/USB?

I had no luck with apt-get install kde4 (E: Couldn't find package kde4), no luck with aptitude, no luck with Synaptic (The following packages have unresolved dependencis kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4).

I have just installed ubuntu on my machine which doesn't have Internet. I can access the net on my laptop and copy any files over. I am wanting to install blueman to tether my iPhone. I cannot find a .deb of it, so downloaded the tar.gz but the stock install doesnt have a compiler. I could download and copy over a compiler, but I'm guessing I'm going to be here hours copying over each dependancy that I come across (I'm guessing there may be a few) how I can tether my iPhone or how I can install blueman? Currently, my Dell XPS M1530 is currently dual-booting Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Windows Vista Home Premium, and I've decided after using Windows a total of around 4 hours over the past 6 months that I can probably let it go. So, I don't need Windows anymore and I believe I'm ready for a full install of Ubuntu. Though, I probably will wait for 11.04 to come out first.
A few ways I've thought of already are: 1) Find an external hard drive to put the Wubi files on. 2) Upload files to an storage website. 3) Temporarily put the Wubi files onto another computer (Windows). All these meaning I would then wipe my harddrive and install Ubuntu from a CD. And by "files", I mean Documents, Pictures, Downloads, etc.
EDIT: deleting all my applications, because OpenOffice.org won't reinstall on my computer due to dependency issues while attempting to install LibreOffice. So a fresh install would be nice.
I have been running ONLY linux (ubuntu) on my computer for years now. However, a friend sucked me back into the world of MMO's (angry fist @ RIFT). So, I decided to pick up a new disc, slap windows 7 on it and now want to dual boot.Basically I had to do some disc juggling to get windows to play nice. So my windows drive is now first, then my Ubuntu drive second.Its been a while so I'm wondering how involved / what would be the steps to get grub2 to chainload into windows7 (in my head I want to say I'm going to boot into the live cd, mount the windows disc and reinstall the loader to the windows drive since its the first disc in the chain?)
