Ubuntu :: Install Or Un-Install Packages Using Software Centre?
Jun 20, 2010
I've lost the ability to Install or Un-Install Packages on my Advent 4213 Netbook running Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop Edition. I keep getting an error message saying Previous installation hasn't been completed
The installation could have failed because of an error in the corresponding software package or it was cancelled in an unfriendly way. You have to repair this before you can install or remove any further software.
every time I try to Install or Un-Install Packages using Ubuntu Software Centre. Is there a way to repair my Install without having to resort to doing a clean Re-Install?
This is utter nonsenseI need Sun Java Plugin because Iced Tea is low-quality garbage that doesnt work for all JAVA sites. and theres no install button, why is the install button disabled, WHY? Its not in synaptic package manager either.
after having used 9.10 KK for quite some time now, i got curious about the games.i notice that while i am trying to install some of them - Airstrike, ACM Serial Combat Simulator, 20.000 Light Years Into Space etc, i am not able to do so.i a message box saying the following " Requires Installation of untrusted packages. The action would require the installation of packages from not authenticated sources.can anyone please let me know who i can install such games ? and since there seems to be such a security threat how do i distinguish the 'bad' from the 'good' games.
I think it's an excellent distro. I am currently dual booting Windows and Xubuntu. When I run the Software Centre it attempts to load, then quits. I tried running from the terminal using
I'm trying to install Enna media centre but having trouble. When I try to install through the Software Centre, I get a message saying package dependencies can not be resolved.
For some time now I've put off installing Karmic as there seemed to be a bunch of complaints and issues right at the beginning (probably unfounded) and stuck to a nice and running 9.04.
Anyway over the weekend I had some problems. I won't go into them as it's along story and rather irrelevant now. The outcome was that I decided it was simpler to do a clean install so I backed up my files, downloaded and burnt a new Live CD for Karmic 9.10 and yesterday installed it. My first impressions are very good, I like it a lot!
The only thing I have a problem with is this. Under: Applications>Ubuntu Software Centre I seem unable to install or remove anything. By this I mean after selecting some application when I click on the Install or Remove button nothing happens apart from the slight flicker. Nothing...zilch! I can install using apt-get in terminal or using Synaptic just fine. My feeling is that its a "button" issue rather than with Software Centre...but who knows
I am a new ubuntu user, I downloaded it because it was recommended over windows for programming uses. I am new to Ubuntu, and everytime I try and download something from the Ubuntu software center an error pops up saying: "Requires installation of untrusted packages. The action would require the installation of packages from not authenticated sources." It does this for everything I try and download.
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 , but after updating ubuntu using update manager, I am unable to install software using software Centre. When I click install button the software centre does nothing. Update manager concluded
Whenever I do sudo apt-get or use the Ubuntu Software Center, I can't download anything because a message comes up saying "Action requires installation of untrusted packages: The action would require the installation of packages from not authenticated sources." I've been trying to download GIMP and Thunderbird, so... I dunno what the problem is.
I have searched everywhere for the error I am getting which pertains to "E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)" I came across this when I was trying to uninstall dovecot through apt. This is what I am doing:
Quote:
# apt-get --purge remove dovecot Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done
I just upgraded from 11.2 to 11.4 and the installation/upgrade worked just perfect. I than followed the instructions in the "New User How To/FAQ", "Multimedia and restricted format" post. I was following the instruction in the 11.4 section. I added the additional repositories as explained. I then was on the section where it talks about going into software management and selecting the "Packman" repository and clicking to "switch systems packages" to the versions in this repository (packman). I than click this link and the "warning" screen appears and I am present with conflict resolution after conflict resolution dialog. It just seems that there are some many conflicts, it just seems wrong and I canceled.
The installation/upgrade appears to have worked just fine. My mail is there, audio and dvd play back worked the first try after the upgrade. I am not clear if this is what I should expect or their is something wrong or if I even need to complete this step for a successfully installation.
I've got an ASUS eee1005 that I'm trying to load eeebuntu -- I've read good things about it! However, I managed to get it (partially) installed using only unetbootin and the eeebuntu-nbr iso. Luckily I've got other working laptops in the house, or I'd be stuck because now I've got a partially installed distro that isn't allowing me usage of my wireless. Basically, what I'd like to do is be able to go back to the install process and load all the packages I want, which, hopefully, will give me NetworkManager so that I can finally connect. I can boot to the thumbdrive (8gig, btw) but I don't think I've got the right files on it to do the install. Here's what appears on the thumbdrive:
[code]...
I would think that with these files on the thumbdrive, it could find its way into the install process. Apparently not. I've read most, if not all of the 'install from USB' threads and how-to's, and it's still not working right - Now, having a partially installed distro (with GUI that's not GNOME, or KDE. . ?) Are there any options I can use to pickup where the install left off and start adding packages? Or should I just scrap it and re-install?
im using fedora 14 and i have a slow internet connection. i want 2 install some packages from the fedora 14 dvd instead of downloading from internet using add/remove packages. i tried to edit /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo and /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo but it dint work.
I have a user running a retail copy of RH 5 Ent. and isn't sure what package he needs. He is a developer and when installing other instances of RH he just checked off basically all of the packages under development during the initial installer. Now, he's trying to add packages but they require dependencies and he is not able to auto-satisfy those dependencies.
Is there a way that I can get back to that menu during the initial installation and let him check off all the boxes that he wants, or can I have RH auto-install all packages from DVD or install all required packages from DVD?
I have an Acer Aspire One, Model PAV70 that had Windows 7 Starter on it. I booted Ubuntu 10.10 from a USB HDD and then formatted the Acer drive with Ubuntu. I then started installing Ubuntu on the newly formatted HDD and got an error near the end of the install. It said, "apt configuration problem, an attempt to configure apt to install additional packages from the cd failed." After this happened the system locked up and I had to reboot. Now I get a black screen with a white blinking cursor. I can't get the system to recognize anything. What can I do?

I have just installed the newest version of ubuntu (10.10 the maverick meerkat) and im struggling installing any programs, wine and vlc arnt appearing on synaptic package manager and anything i try to do in either the command promt or ubuntu software centre doesnt work either. On the command promt when i follow the commands as seen on various tutourials the command promt comes back with an error. VLC example given below.
on ubuntu 7.1 , I can not install the packages , receiving the followings :
user1@ubuntu:~$ rpm -q make-3.80-184.1 The program 'rpm' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing: sudo apt-get install rpm bash: rpm: command not found user1@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install rpm
I'm trying to use my iphone in ubuntu (it's jailbroken) and I tried following a couple guides at work to no avail. I JUST installed ubuntu (a clean upgrade) only a few hours ago, and this is the first thing I tried.
I had the same problem:
Code:
I would like to get past this, or have an alternative to putting music on it's stupid ipod application!
I tried to install some packages using "apt-get" but every time I try to install one it throws "Aborted" message, I tried several packages and combination allways with the same result.
But If I install them with Synaptics I can do it without any problem, as I know Synaptics uses apt-get to install packages so all this is a bit confusing to me .
apt-get version:
apt 0.7.25.3ubuntu9 per a i386 compiled on May 14 2010 15:33:48 I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx
I try to install Ubuntu upgrade I get errors Failed to fetch http://us.archive.Ubuntu.com/Ubuntu/...ntu3.7_all.deb. could not resolve [url]....And many more similar to this one I'm using my android to type so I can't copy all of them.My log in screen is black with a cursor it started when my update failed to install properly.I use an Intel procceser, 512mb ram, intergrated Intel video card, 1.6ghz And uh 80gb harddrive.
After I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.4 I could see Ubuntu One in the Places menu. (and subsequently have access to my files etc there).I have now installed 10.4 on a new machine (clean install) and I don't seem to have access from 'Places' now. The only way I can get to it is via a web browser. Is it just hidden away somewhere? Or do I need to install some additional packages?
I noticed this trying to install the virtualbox qt gui, but it doesn't really seem to be anything to do with that. I think maybe I have a PPA that has different versions of a lot of qt packages, but I'm a bit confused: In Synaptic, I try to install virtualbox-ose-qt, and get an error
"Depends: libqt4-opengl but it is not going to be installed"
Ok, so I search for that package, it is there, but I get:
Depends: libqtcore4 (=4:4.6.2-0ubuntu5) but 4:4.6.2-0ubuntu6~ppa9 is to be installed Depends: libqtgui4 (=4:4.6.2-0ubuntu5) but 4:4.6.2-0ubuntu6~ppa9 is to be installed
And pretty much the same every time I try to follow this down the pile. Now I think this is saying it wants the version ending 5, but the only version available is the one ending 6~ppa9. But under "Latest Version" is the version number ending 5 anyway, so I don't know where this other one is coming from.
I sorted everything in Synaptic by Origin and went through everything that wasn't directly from Ubuntu, but didn't see anything at all about libqt4, so as far as I can tell there shouldn't be any conflict with a PPA anyway??
Do I need a PPA for the most recent versions? Or is it possible to force installation of the versions available? Would that cause problems?
I did a succesfull Alternative Installation of 10.04 yesterday and managed to load the packages that allowed me to install NetGear NG511v2 drivers. So far so good.
When I plug in a usb flashdrive it only mounts during boot-up. I know I can load a package that allows me to select ' hot mount usb drive' (or similar check box). How do I find what packages to install to give me this functionality?
Similarly my accessories tab shows Bluetooth as being available. There is no bluetooth on the laptop so how do I find out what packages I can safely remove?
The wider question is, is there a list of packages with their associated functions and associations?
I've already had a look at the lists of installed packages and available packages on my CD, but I have no idea what they do.
I would like to do a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 on my Ubuntu 10.04 machine.Living in South Africa where we pay per MB, the 700MB live cd will use my data cap up for the month. I have a few other applications/programs installed (like vlc, skype, remastersys...) that are not part of the normal distribution. Is there a way whereby I can extract these applications to install again without having to download them of the internet? Also to get my added repositries, codecs,

I can't install packages via the terminal. For example: sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
Doesnt work. It gives me: Lser paketlistor... Frdig Bygger beroendetrd Lser tillstndsinformation... Frdig E: Kunde inte hitta paketet compizconfig-settings-manager
Swedish there hehe, but basically it says the it couldnt find the the package named "compizconfig-sett.This problems occurs in several situations. Every single package i try except "upgrade" fails to find a package.
Also, the package manager "Ubuntu Software Manager" and Synaptic arent giving me any solutions. Same problems. Packages arent available and such. I have a working internet connection and the GPU drivers are installed. Everything is updated. sudo apt-get install update/upgrade is done and also done in the general update manager.
