General :: Boot Up Emachine With (either) Dvd In Drive

Apr 4, 2011

Have an older EMachine that I'd like to load up with Linux. The EMachine already has Windows 2K loaded. Have Fedora Core 2 and Red Hat 5 and for my test would take either. Have tried to boot up this emachine with the (either) dvd in the drive and made sure dvd is first in boot up sequence yet all that happens is Windows loads.

General :: Getting Linux To Work On EMachine Netbook (no CD Drive)

Jul 15, 2011

A friend loaded linux onto my eMachine netbook. Unfortunately the touch pad and WiFi refuse to work. He loaded it into a 40gb partition leaving 120gb unusable so it would probably make sense to start all over again. I only need basic txt software, pics and internet to work so I am not looking for state of the art. Just something that will work, is not too difficult to set up and preferably can be loaded from a pen drive (memory stick). Any suggestions? The "distro" as I understand it is Kubuntu. Not sure what version but I will have a look later.

Fedora :: Acer Emachine E725 Wireless?

Aug 31, 2010

I am very new to Linux and Fedora. I installed newest Fedora to a friend's Acer emachine E725 but the wireless does not work. Originally it had a Moblin linux installed on it but my friend does not speak English so I had to install for her a Hungarian version linux. Fedora seems to be quite user friendly but this wireless problem makes me worry. The wireless was working perfectly on Moblin, the wireless manager showed all available wifi connections and I could chose the desired one and the laptop connected to it. Unfortunately on Fedora and other Linux distributions this does not work. This laptop has a hardware button to switch the wireless On and Off but under Fedora it does not function.

General :: Boot From A USB Flash Drive With MBP?

Jun 25, 2010

I have been playing around with a Ubunto 10.04 live cd (32bit) on my mac. I want to be able to boot this OS (or similar) on my Mac, and on any other computer (PC or Mac). I also want it to remember changes and files. From looking around this is possible from a USB (with a Casper RW loop file I think). I have used the Live CD to create a bootable flash drive, which works on PC's but not my mac. Using these instructions: [URL] I was able to get my Mac to see the Linux at boot but once I clicked the Tux icon it would hang/ freeze. I let it sit for 10+ min and nothing happened. I started over (with a fresh formatting) and got the same results. I have reformatted the flash drive and am ready to try over. I think that I am goofing up in terminal steps as I am not use to doing that. After the last step in the terminal I get an error, something like invalid number or similar, it is not the one mentioned in the instructions.

I know that this for advanced users, I am not yet but working that way. I an a (retired) power windows user, moderate Mac user and a new Linux user. I want to learn which is why I am asking. I am not in a spot to install Linux directly on my Mac, so I I am seeking help to do it on a flash drive. I want the ability to run off any computer and I see this as I way to get there.

General :: Boot Slackware Without A USB Drive?

Jul 31, 2011

Background: Before this I was using Ubuntu, but I decided to use slackware from now on. So I installed it using a DVD and using the setup program also formatted a USB drive since it asked if I wanted to. After this I could boot into slackware fine (including getting into KDE with startx) and I can shutdown using halt -r now. When I boot with the USB drive in it says "Welcome to the Slackware Linux custom USB boot stick!".

Problem: If I turn on the computer without the USB drive it goes into "grub recovery". I don't know what I should do if I want to boot the computer without the USB drive. I also don't know why GRUB is coming up because I thought it had installed LILO.

General :: Can't Just Copy A Bootable CD To USB Drive And Boot From It

The CD-image should contain a boot-sector and everything else that is needed for booting, yet the USB stick does not boot.

What am I missing - why does the stick not boot?

PS: I am not interested in tips on how to create a bootable stick, I only want to understand why the above method does not work.

General :: System Won't Boot From Hard Drive

Jun 22, 2010

Something caused my Fedora 11 system to reboot this evening, only it keeps trying to boot from a CD/DVD. I get to a prompt that says "Boot from CD/DVD" and then it appears just to wait. I can insert my Fedora 11 installation disk and boot from it in rescue mode, and then I can see my entire file system, so I don't think the hard drive has failed. The system just doesn't seem to want to boot from the HD any more. I can get to a command line using the Fedora rescue mode, but I don't know what to do once I'm there.

one additional note. Around a month and a half ago I deleted some files by mistake and wanted to try to recover them. I tried a bunch of approaches that I came across (none worked), and I do remember that one of them had instructions to unmount a portion of the filesystem to protect it from being overwritten before I could recover the files.

Unfortunately, at this point I have no real memory of exactly what I did, but the system has been working fine since then. I would have thought that I had rebooted since then, but it's possible that this is the first time I've rebooted. Could I have unmounted some part of the file system such that it would still by unmounted even when rebooting? How can I check this from the command line I get in rescue mode? (My file system gets mounted under /mnt/sysimage/)

I routinely use the firewire drive to boot MAC OS X.However, I would like to boot from the linux partition of the USB drive. This linux partition had linux installed on it from a live cd, and during that process, I told the installer to install GRUB on the usb drive (which happened to be /dev/sdd).My question is, how do I get this disk to show up during the iMac option-boot? Currently, only the firewire MAC OS X option shows up. I have read about rEFIT, but that appears to install it to the Mac OS X disk (would that still work?)...Also mentioned was installing rEFIT to the internal EFI system partition, but I don't know if that is wise.
