My computer has windows 7 and kubuntu 8.0.4 installed. I install fedora 12 in the /dev/sda8 ext4 partition now. Currently the computer can dual boot windows 7 and kubuntu 8.0.4. I want to make the computer triple boot. Executing the update-grub command in Kubuntu's Konsole do not detect and add an entry for the Fedora installation in menu.lst.

At the moment fedora grub boots, from there i am able to choose other operating systems. But I want to use windows boot loader, from there i would like to have windows give me the choice of different OS's to boot from.

Moblin does have a GRUB, but I'm presuming that its the legacy version, not GRUB 2. How would I get the Ubuntu GRUB back as the main bootloader if that were the case?
This is just planning, there will probably be more question springing to mind later on.
I am attempting to triple boot Ubuntu, Windows 7, and Backtrack 4. Win7 and Ubuntu are both booting and working properly, but after trying a number of configurations for GRUB I cannot boot Backtrack. Everything I attempt seems to come back to one problem and result in the same error: Error 17.

Windows 7 64-bit D: (GPT and MFT)5. Ubuntu 10.04 / (only GPT)6. Ubuntu 10.04 swap (only GPT)Windows only supports MFT and thus sees last two partitions (5 and 6) as unallocated space. Can I somehow make it see these partitions to be able to access files from Ubuntu?P.S. I know this is rather Windows problem, but I don't know any good forums where I can ask that, because mostly on these forums the answer is "Why would you need anything but Windows?".

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just bought a Dell 537s machine and configured it for dual boot of Windows 7 and Kubuntu 9.10. On my old dual boot machine I had the Windows System and the Linux System on different disk partitions. That way I could write fstab in such a way as to make the Windows System read-only as seen from Linux, so Linux couldn't mess up any Windows System files (and since Windows can't read ext3, Windows couldn't mess up the Linux System).
But the new machine came with Windows 7 installed and gobbling up 3 primary partitions. Kubuntu installed itself in such a way that Linux can read/write to the Windows System. This makes me nervous that Kubuntu might be able to mess up Windows 7.
Is there any way to make specific Windows 7 directories/files unwriteable as seen from Linux without altering their behavior in Windows 7?
I have a dual boot with vista on disk 0 and ubuntu on disk1. I just installed a disk 2 that I would like to use to try out other distros. Ubuntu is the only linux experience I have had. I'm really not very good at all of this, so my questions before I start loading another distro are:
1. Does Fedora use GRUB as its installer?
2. When I installed ubuntu on disk 1 (sdb1), the install was very simple. I chose sdb1 for the install, it loaded it, and when it was done I simply had the choice of which drive to boot into. Will installing Fedora on disk 2 (sdc1) be just as simple, or will I encounter steps I must take to make it so that I have a choice of which disk/OS to boot into?
I have a windows vista and fedora 11 64 bit dual boot. my diskstructure is as follows:
I have a swap of 6 gb.
I dont want to loose any of my existing OS's.
I have Vista and F11 dual booted on my system. I wan't to resize Fedora(I think Vista has already been shrunk as far as It can) and install Debian as a third OS. Fedora takes up all the free space and I am only using a small amount of the partition. I am not sure of the best way to do this. Can I boot the Debian live cd and resize Fedora at the partion step? Or do I need to boot a live F11 cd, repartition and then boot the debian cd? Or is there a better way?

We are using fedora. On my laptop, I want to triple boot. Right now I have just 1 partition, with windows 7 ultimate x64 installed. I want to triple boot windows 7, windows xp x64, and fedora 12 x64. I am getting ready to format my laptop now with xp installing first. Then I will do windows 7, and then lastly fedora. Do I need to do anything special while installing fedora last? I have a 300gb hard drive, and I plan on having 100 for xp, 150 for 7, and the remainder for fedora.

I have a new Dell Studio 1555 64 bit system with Windows 7. I really like running dual boot systems and this is my first W7 machine. Is it vaguely safe to attempt to install Kubuntu 9.10 on this system? It still smells new and I'd hate to wreck it this soon, LOL. The vast amount of info on this forum along with the sheer number of posts makes it difficult to sift through sometimes.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have triple boot pc (xp, ubuntu, and fedora), installed in that order. xp and ubuntu seem to be stable. i have had to pull the power cord 3 or 4 times while booted in fedora. i noticed the last 2 times i can still move the mouse around, but can't get it to open anything. the keyboard is locked up, can't alt-f1 or f2 or anything to get console. can't get it to do anything, other than watch the mouse tail move around (weird).
i installed a new power supply (and at least i now have a power switch - the old one never had one), but that didn't fix the lock up problem. i haven't ran yum update since the fc10 live cd gnome install. was planning on doing that later.. not sure how long it will stay up to download all the 300 or so updates. right now the only thing open is a terminal (can't type in it).. what should i look at to fix this lock up problem?
I now have a triple boot on triple drives with Vista on sda, Ubuntu on sdb, and PCLinuxOS on sdc.When I installed PCLinuxOS on sdc, I installed the bootloader in the first sector of partition 1 of sdc so that I could keep using the Grub bootloader that installed with Ubuntu.Everything is working fine at the moment.I now want install Fedora 10 on sdc for experimentation. I have used gparted to create another partition on sdc to install Fedora 10, so my question is 'What and where exactly should I put in the /boot/grub/menu.lst of my original bootloader to get to Fedora?'

Everything works fine, the setup went very well. But I got to thinking (A dangerous thing for me). In Ubuntu I am using separate partitions for / (root) and /home. I was wondering, during install of Fedora, could I use the separate partition I am using now for both root and /home for just / (root) and use the Ubuntu /home partition for Fedora (set the mount point for /home to the same partition as I did for Ubuntu and not format the drive)? This would allow me to seamlessly use the /home partition and not require duplication of files. I can mount the Ubuntu /home dir while in Fedora.I can share the /home partition with two different installs of Ubuntu (been there).
I need some help creating a triple boot system, I have already installed XP and W7, now I am installing Fedora 12 (this is for work so unfortunately it has to be like that). Now the problem is that I want it to show all the partitions in GRUB. Right now it works by going to GRUB first, when selecting Windows it jumps to the Win7 boot manager.
I tried to have them all in one but it seems like the addresses I used in GRUB did not work cause it keeps directing me to the Win7 BM. BTW I am using a single drive with 3 different logical partitions.
I have an Intel DG33TL MB, Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650, 8GB SuperTalent DDR2-800, and 4 Seagate 500GB hard disks. The disks are connected to a 3Ware 9650SE-4LPML and set for RAID0. I partitioned the drive in the following manner: 900GB for XP-Pro x64 (first install), 100 GB XP-Pro (installed second), and the remaining for FC10. I had a dual boot working fine with XP and F12 on two physical drives, all was well. Last night my friend helped upgrade my system, I now have 3 drives (20gig F12) (60gig XP) and (320gig Win7) now the PC only loads Win7 as I think my friend told bios to boot from 320gig. Has anybody here got experience with triple boot from 3 drives? Here is my guess, tell bios to boot from other drive and add Win7 to grub. Not sure how but that's my guess. Also what worries me is that win7 does not "see" the other two drives.

Tri-booting. They were installed in the order I listed above. I ran into a few bugs with Kubuntu, so I no longer want to use it. I want to use GParted on a LiveCD to format Kubuntu and expand my Ubuntu home partition to sit on top of Kubuntu's space right now. If I nuke Kubuntu, will Grub still exist with my Ubuntu/XP entries to boot?

When Mint formated the hard drive, Fedora wasn't in the graphic, even though sda1 was ext4 and sda3 was lvm2. When Mint rebotted, Mint and OpenSUSE were on the menu, but Fedora wasn't.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a Computer, It came with Windows 7 64bit on it. I installed Ubuntu through WUBI. I used the Windows Disk Management program to resize my HDD. I shrunk the main drive and created a 20 gig free space. I installed WindowsXP on this 20g space. I had to change from AHCI to ATA. I started my new XP installation. As I should have expected my the screen that let me pick between Windows 7 and Ubuntu was gone, and it just said XP. Well thats cool. I get in XP use bcdeasy and use the install Win7 to mbr. So I restarted. Great I now I have Ubuntu and Win7... but no XP. So i think, okay, ill boot into Ubuntu, use the update grub command and XP will be there, so i do it and restart. No XP, So i try to boot into Win7 and see if i can do something in there.. No luck it says it can't boot and takes me to a startup recovery thing. Which, as Windows recovery things tend to do, doesn't find anything wrong. So I have Ubuntu now, which is great, but I do need Windows.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm currently on a work trip with my Asus G72GX laptop for non-work use (I'm posting from my work laptop). Yesterday, I accidentally booted into my laptop's recovery partition (from the Grub2 bootloader). Before I realized that that's what was happening, it booted into some kind of recovery program which ended up in an error. I restarted the laptop and couldn't get into the bootloader anymore. Now, the only thing that comes up is an error -- "error: unknown filesystem." Below that, it gives me the "grub rescue>" prompt. Most of the commands that sites list for grub rescue only return "Unknown command". ls works and lists all of my partitions: (hd0), (hd0,msdos, (hd0,msdos7), etc. down to msdos1. When I "ls (hd0,msdos" (etc, etc) it says "error: unknown filesystem."
I then started looking into booting from a Live Ubuntu USB drive. I've tried 11.04 and 10.04 now and they both do the same thing. I put them on an 8GB flash drive (only 1 at any given time) using Universal USB Installer and was able to get to the Ubuntu menu (Run Ubuntu from this USB, Install Ubuntu on a Hard Disk, etc.) If I try either "Run Ubuntu" or "Install Ubuntu", the screen flickers and comes right back to that menu.BTW, my 3 operating systems are: Windows 7 HP 64-bit, Mythbuntu 10.10 64-bit, and Windows XP 32-bit. Laptop hardware: Core 2 Duo P8700 2.53GHz, 6GB RAM, Nvidia 8800 GTX video card.

i'm trying to set up a triple boot for me newly bought iMac.
I had Kubuntu 8.10 with KDE 4.0 interface and i decided to try out fedora to see if i liked it and wanted to eventually switch. i've done so many dual boot systems with Kubuntu and not had any problems that i decided not to back up my system this time before running the installation. after running the installation and shrinking my hard drive (200 gb) by 80 gigs, i rebooted to find that Kubuntu was no longer bootable. the first time i booted into fedora, disk utility popped up with a message that said "1 or more hard drives is failing". i ran the test that it recommended and found no problems. then i ran the longer test and still found no problems. i've rebooted a few times and have not been able to see Kubuntu in the boot loader options. if you need any more information i will be happy to provide it. my question, obviously, is how can i retrieve my Kubuntu partition. it is still there but is not bootable.
