I need to buy some more RAM for my old PC. I know there are Windows applications that can tell me the type of RAM I have installed. I am running Ubuntu and I was wondering if there was an alternative that would tell me about the RAM I am using.

I believe the DD-WRT software has all ports blocked by default so opening up my machine for SSH login would only leave my system vulnerable at that port. View 7 Replies View RelatedIm having a frustrating issue with my two machine cluster I setup using Conga. Everything was working great except now when lucci starts mysql the port (3306) is never opened to outside machines. I can do a "ps -ef | grep mysql" and see it running as well as login to mysql on the node it is running on - but an nmap of the machine does not show the 3306 port and I cannot login to mysql remotely and yes I turned off all iptables(iptables,ip6tables) and SElinux is disabled.What am I missing here? If I start mysql on my own (and it is using the same my.cnf as lucci is) it does show the port open and works perfect,t for some reason when lucci starts it, no dice
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been looking at things with the uname command and was wondering if you can install a system with 64/32 bit when it was actually not the one you installed (e.g. you install a 64 bit OS on a 32 bit comp). I was basically wondering how to tell what type of hardware I actually have instead of what the Debian package installed. (In order to ensure that I am running the hardware the way it was designed.) At the moment, I am looking at my processor (uname -p returns "unknown") and the machine build (uname -m returns i686).
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a moderately old laptop, with an AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-50 processor and 438 MB RAM (after the graphics takes a fair old chunk it seems). I've currently got lubuntu 64-bit on it, and am not 100% happy with the performance. (Though I'm very pleased with the system in other respects). I'm wondering whether 32-bit GNU/Linux might use less RAM, and thus result in better performance.Or should I be more focussed on other things if I'm looking to boost performance, like maybe the hard drive, or stopping the CPU throttling down (/proc/cpuinfo reports 800MHz)?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm running Fedora 11 (2.6.30.10-105.2.4.fc11.i686.PAE) 8 GB memory on a AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 965 Processor, 4 core server I just built.The problem I have run into is any virtual machine that has >1024 MB memory assigned to it will not boot. As along as it has 1024 MB or less it boots fine.The symptom you see is a very quick message "Booting from hard disk" the screen then goes blank, you can't login through SSH, and can't ping the network address so I know it's not some crazy video problem hiding the boot process.The attachment are messages from a failed boot attempt.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been running my Dell Mini 9 with the latest alpha for 10.04 since January, but over the weekend I botched things pretty badly and decided to go back to 9.10.I saved my home directory to another machine, and proceeded to install from a 9.10 USB disk. Things didn't go terribly well (I kept seeing "devkit-disks-daemon" crashing) but the install did complete. I shutdown the netbook, yanked the USB drive and powered it back on only to be greeted the grub menu. Choosing any option yields: Code:error: out of memoryPress any key to continue...I did a little searching in places like:HTML there is no mention of that problem there, and running though the command line instructions has the same results. (the linux command seems to be the problem)I've tried re-installed grub from the directions on the page but it is failing with:

i am using Fedora 14. Once system get hanged during opening a video file so I had to restart the system by pressing restart button. But after restarting there are few problems appearing like system monitor not opening and Thunder bird opening but not showing any folder including inbox.

Looks like SElinux has stopped working
In my system around 73gb(pc-desktop) i have,1 primary partition(windows)-25gb, 1-extended partition(remaining gb) 3 logical partitions were there in (under) extended partition in one of the logical partition is d:drive. in my hard disk d: drive is -/dev/sda5
previosly i was fat -file system , (d:drive-/dev/sda5), i remember i changed the d: drive(d:drive-/dev/sda5) file system to ext4file system ,with following command using terminal
After doing(changing the file system)this one ,i couldnt see the d:drive data
By doing that
1q) Did i reformatted the partition? i think the new filesystem(ext4) has no knowledge of the data that was on it when it had a FAT filesystem.
2q) How to do undo operation,i tried to change the filesystem type to fat/ntfs in terminal using command --sudo mkfs -t FAT /dev/sda5.
Result:its showing text message-'mkfs.FAT: No such file or directory'(not in single quote)

I just loaded octave. I ran through a few examples of how to implement a script file. Everything works until I get to "plot". When I run the "plot" command I get the following.

I'm trying to install deluge via ssh and my vps has 512mb ram and is only using 11% of it prior to running the code.
I have had a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 and installed some software after that.Since third some, some process is eating half of my memory.I have checked processes running in system manager but everything is normal.Maximum is consumed by compiz which is about 26 mb, seems very normal.I did restarted my computer several times, and in the start for 5 mins, its fine after that again my cpu fans runs at very fast speed and my one cpu is used up 95 % (I have dual core).Please help me out, this invisible thing is driving me crazy.I am attaching my htop screen shot (sorted by cpu %), now the cpu is not used by completely but fan is still struggling hard and fast.
