I'm trying to determine the total disk space used by some files with certain type.I'm trying this with find, but maybe there's another solution? The fact is that I don't know what should I give to the pipe next to find (or whatever command) so that I can determine the total disk space used by that files.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been looking at things with the uname command and was wondering if you can install a system with 64/32 bit when it was actually not the one you installed (e.g. you install a 64 bit OS on a 32 bit comp). I was basically wondering how to tell what type of hardware I actually have instead of what the Debian package installed. (In order to ensure that I am running the hardware the way it was designed.) At the moment, I am looking at my processor (uname -p returns "unknown") and the machine build (uname -m returns i686).

View 2 Replies View RelatedHP's apparently all but useless Linux site suggests that their hplip drivers give you that capability. However, it also seems to expect that I will be running a GUI to use their tools.
My CP-1215 is attached to my server which doesn't have a GUI installed.
Previously I'd been using the open source CUPS driver, which seemed to work pretty well. However, I recently ran low on one colour of toner which messed up the printing. The toner-out lights on the printer never cam one, so replacing the toner cartridge was not the first thing I tried to fix it.
I've just installed the hplip / hp-plugin driver which also seems to be working. However, the CUPS web interface doesn't allow me to retrieve the toner status.
Has anyone had any luck retrieving the toner levels from an HP colour laserjet printer?
I have systemcrashes on my debian system since a few days now (didn't have any problems before) and the following entries in my kern.log: Machine check events logged
Where and how can I read these "Machine check events"? It has to be something wrong with the hardware, right?
I installed mcelog with aptitude. But it doenst give any output:

Problems do not stop here however...Now, when it reboots after install all I get is a "Machine Check Exception" followed by a "Kernel Panic". I had to switch back to Vista Home finally (not happy about that).
I just bought it and it runs happily under Vista, I just don't run happily under Vista.

In my system around 73gb(pc-desktop) i have,1 primary partition(windows)-25gb, 1-extended partition(remaining gb) 3 logical partitions were there in (under) extended partition in one of the logical partition is d:drive. in my hard disk d: drive is -/dev/sda5
previosly i was fat -file system , (d:drive-/dev/sda5), i remember i changed the d: drive(d:drive-/dev/sda5) file system to ext4file system ,with following command using terminal
After doing(changing the file system)this one ,i couldnt see the d:drive data
By doing that
1q) Did i reformatted the partition? i think the new filesystem(ext4) has no knowledge of the data that was on it when it had a FAT filesystem.
2q) How to do undo operation,i tried to change the filesystem type to fat/ntfs in terminal using command --sudo mkfs -t FAT /dev/sda5.
Result:its showing text message-'mkfs.FAT: No such file or directory'(not in single quote)
I had very imp data in d:drive
I just loaded octave. I ran through a few examples of how to implement a script file. Everything works until I get to "plot". When I run the "plot" command I get the following.

sh: gnuplot: not found
Just to double check my work, I ran the following code:
y=[1 2 3];

I am new to Debian but not Linux-based systems. I have been experimenting a lot with Debian Lenny/Squeeze. I am growing more comfortable each day with the Debian design. Yet there remain many unexplored areas. I am creating a migration check list. Things to check, prepare, or reconfigure when moving from one Linux-based system to Debian.
I have a good computer background and my current check list probably is fairly good. Yet I would appreciate input and opinions from experienced Debian users of things to watch in such a migration. Login defs, passwd/group files, different directory locations, keymaps, services and daemons, etc. I am not too concerned with the desktop as I plan to stick with KDE 3.5 for a while and I can basically move those settings across.
I want to put check menu & check list in utility dialog.i dont know how i do this
