Sep 14, 2010how much memory a ubuntu machine use? I use the 'top' to query,about 1.5G was used, 500M free. surprise! System monitor show that only 400M memory are used, which one was right??

May 9, 2010I have a moderately old laptop, with an AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-50 processor and 438 MB RAM (after the graphics takes a fair old chunk it seems). I've currently got lubuntu 64-bit on it, and am not 100% happy with the performance. (Though I'm very pleased with the system in other respects). I'm wondering whether 32-bit GNU/Linux might use less RAM, and thus result in better performance.Or should I be more focussed on other things if I'm looking to boost performance, like maybe the hard drive, or stopping the CPU throttling down (/proc/cpuinfo reports 800MHz)?

Jan 26, 2010I'm running Fedora 11 (2.6.30.10-105.2.4.fc11.i686.PAE) 8 GB memory on a AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 965 Processor, 4 core server I just built.The problem I have run into is any virtual machine that has >1024 MB memory assigned to it will not boot. As along as it has 1024 MB or less it boots fine.The symptom you see is a very quick message "Booting from hard disk" the screen then goes blank, you can't login through SSH, and can't ping the network address so I know it's not some crazy video problem hiding the boot process.The attachment are messages from a failed boot attempt.

Mar 16, 2010I've been running my Dell Mini 9 with the latest alpha for 10.04 since January, but over the weekend I botched things pretty badly and decided to go back to 9.10.I saved my home directory to another machine, and proceeded to install from a 9.10 USB disk. Things didn't go terribly well (I kept seeing "devkit-disks-daemon" crashing) but the install did complete. I shutdown the netbook, yanked the USB drive and powered it back on only to be greeted the grub menu. Choosing any option yields: Code:error: out of memoryPress any key to continue...I did a little searching in places like:HTML there is no mention of that problem there, and running though the command line instructions has the same results. (the linux command seems to be the problem)I've tried re-installed grub from the directions on the page but it is failing with:

At the moment, top shows all the RAM is taken, (NOT by cache), but the RAM used by the various processes is very far from 16GB.I have seen this problem several times, but I don't understand what is happening.My only remedy so far has been to reboot the machine.

Jan 29, 2011I have had a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 and installed some software after that.Since third some, some process is eating half of my memory.I have checked processes running in system manager but everything is normal.Maximum is consumed by compiz which is about 26 mb, seems very normal.I did restarted my computer several times, and in the start for 5 mins, its fine after that again my cpu fans runs at very fast speed and my one cpu is used up 95 % (I have dual core).Please help me out, this invisible thing is driving me crazy.I am attaching my htop screen shot (sorted by cpu %), now the cpu is not used by completely but fan is still struggling hard and fast.

Feb 3, 2010we found that if we use 'top' to show the memory usage of a server (SuSe Linux 10), we can get virtual memory usage as well as 'Resident memory' usage. For virtual mem or a particular process, it is around 1.1GB, which is large but for resident memory, it only consumes 300MB. Are there anyone who knows what the differences are? I would also like to know whether the difference (1.1GB - 300MB) = 800MB are actually available for use by other applications in the system.

Oct 20, 2010I am monitoring physical memory in a server I administer, and my hardware provider told me they had increased physical memory size to 4Gb... However, using several tools (free -m; top; dmesg | grep Memory; grep MemTotal /proc/meminfo I discovered that I actually have 3Gb, not 4... But, my doubt comes from the fact that dmesg | grem Memory tells me I have 3103396k/4194304k available The first number is effectively 3Gb, but the second one, is 4! so, why I am looking at this two different numbers?

Nov 22, 2009I am writing an application that wants to access periphals registers outside the standard (allowed) memory area.
Doing so gets me "segmentation fault".
I know, this is natural behaviour.
One way of getting around this is writing the module which has to be loaded by linux. I will consider this some time later.
For now, I want to come to some quick result and allow linux or gcc compiler to write to those memory areas of periphals. Is there a direct way to do so?

Aug 25, 2010Is that possible that SHM shared memory is counted as cache memory on Linux with kernel 2.6.18?If find it really odd since this memory is not file backed, but I have a piece of code that loads data using shm_open+mmap, and it generates an amount of cache memory in /proc/meminfo that corresponds exactly to the amount of shared memory (I load that data from a file but I am using posix_fadvise(fd,0,0,POSIX_FADV_DONTNEED) to ensure this file is not cached and I made sure that it is working as expected). As far as I know SHM memory was not tagged as cache memory with kernel 2.6.9.If it is the case it is really unfortunate since normally cache memory can be considered to be part of the "available" memory since it can be flushed promptly but this is clearly not the case with SHM memory... Is there an easy way to get the total amount of used SHM memory on a system?

I've done an extensive google search about the issue and it seems not uncommon. I ran a memtest with no errors returned, so I'm sure that there's nothing really wrong with the memory; apparently it's a bug in the kernel that's causing this.

Jan 8, 2011I have been setting up a vps I got out with bhost.net, with CentOS installed. I've been learning and have set up everying I need with the exception of ftp/sftp.
Using yum I installed vsftpd and ran into problems, thinking it was something I might of done I did a fresh install of CentOS and I still recieve the same problem on a fresh install so it is nothing I have done to the server.
The problem is when connecting via a sftp client I get an out of memory error. This error is listed in the putty faq ( url ) under A.7.5, there is a brief explaintion of the cure under A.7.6.
there is mention of a login script but I don't know where this is located. I'm a novice at Linux but by no means incompotent when it comes to computing.

Anytime I try to access the machine it asks me for my password...I enter it but it says it is invalid....is there anyway to reset it? Internet and smb-browsing ON this machine work, as does pinging FROM it. If this was a windows machine, I'd say a firewall is in the way, but since it's a vanilla karmic install, this should not be the case (or should it?).

All I know is that now that I have switched to Kubuntu the process has become much harder because now I have to find out some special locations, numbers etc. for it to connect to the printer. It says alot about 'contacting the network administrator' if I am unsure about what to put in. But I am more or less the network administrator. how to find out what numbers to put in so that my Linux machine can connect and print to the Windows machine? Or maybe someone knows a few commands to share? I go to Applications > Settings > System settings, Printer configuration, New Printer, New Network printer, and then there are a few options but I don't know which one to choose. Windows Printer via Samba, I guess? Then in the box that says smb://[enter stuff here] I need to put in info but I don't know how to find that info.

Dec 3, 2008I have ubuntu-8.04.1-server installed on virtual machine. It works perfect. Now, I made copy of this virtual machine. I started that copied machine and it works fine, except one thing: network does not work!
I have several others VMs with freeBSD, openBSD or Windows on it, but only ubuntu machine hes network problem after coping. I tried some other VM with ubuntu on it - same problem! I downloaded VM with ubuntu - same problem.I take a look into /etc/network/interfaces file and it looks just as it should (same as before coping) but ifconfig command returns parameters for lo only (before coping there was eth0 and lo).

Aug 28, 2010I am trying to establish the easiest way to share a folder from an Ubuntu machine to a Windows machine.In the past I have added things to smb.conf and that has all worked fine but what I am trying to do is to figure out what the "new user" way of doing this is so that when I am helping other people I know I am getting them to do the simplest thing.I completely removed samba and reinstalled it so that I didn't have any configuration. Right clicked on a folder and selected "Sharing Options" ticked the "Share this folder box" gave it a name and a comment and ticked the other two boxes.
When I went to the windows laptop then it kept asking for a username/password and nothing worked.Back on the ubuntu machine I did sudo smbpasswd -a [username] and created a blank password. Now from the windows machine I can access the shared folder.Is the smbpasswd step still required? It's very confusing for a new user as there is no suggestion that anything other than right clicking on the folder and choosing the options you want would be required. Is it something to do with the fact that this is an ubuntu machine that has gradually been upgraded through versions and this problem wouldn't have been there from a new install?
