But after restarting there are few problems appearing like system monitor not opening and Thunder bird opening but not showing any folder including inbox.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu Lucid on my computer a few weeks ago (fresh install, formatted). But recently I've been having some problems.
This is about the 4th time it happens. When I randomly open a program, sometimes the whole computer will just freeze. I can't change to a terminal window with Ctrl-Alt-F1,2,3,4 or anything. I can only press the Reset button on the computer case. This is frustrating because I already lost ALL my firefox settings and addons and I don't want anything like this to keep on happening.
The problem was: *drumroll* the POWER SOURCE.
Apparently the voltage was having little drops and this caused all the hardware to freeze. This caused the system operation to be WORSE after I bought the new graphics card (since it was bigger and needed more power). I bought a new powersource and installed it and it seems everything is alright now.
Since upgrading to 10.10 when switching to evolution calendar, my Netbook freezes, completely. Not just the calendar, but the whole interface and I must shut the machine off to escape. I use the Gnome desktop (not the silly netbook one . I can't find any other references to this in the forums, does any one know if this is a known bug? or there is a fix? it isn't listed in the sticky at the top of the general forum.

that works, BUT the browser is opening BEHIND the top 'menu' bar, and the bottom 'task' bar, which obviously, is not what i want. how do i set it to either hide these 'bars' or open the browser in front of them like it does if i manually run the command from a terminal?
I have created .NET 2.0 windows application setup with MySQL database on the XP and I have installed same setup on the Ubuntu. Right now full setup of my windows application (Desktop application) using WINE installed successfully but I'm facing one major problem. but when I'm trying to open my application using shortcut from desktop its not opening.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIf I start skipping through a movie or song that's playing, sometimes the program will totally freeze. It stops playing audio and video altogether. Similarly, if for instance I'm listening to a music playlist, often times when VLC skips to the next track it stops playing audio, but continues through the track like it's still playing. Once it reaches the end of the first track it had a problem with, it freezes altogether and I have to close the program. In fact, the program stays running even after I "x" out of it, and I have to kill the process in system monitor and restart VLC in order to restore functionality. This happens quite often (as in, a few times a day), and as I'm sure you can imagine, this gets quite annoying, lol.
I've looked in the various logs in Log Viewer, but I don't see any obvious problems. There are no error messages pertaining to VLC, or audio or video output so far as I can tell. I've also tried reinstalling VLC to no avail. I think the next thing I'll try is to remove it completely first, and then reinstall it....but if that doesn't work, is there anything else you guys think I should be looking at? Lucid is the first Ubuntu release that's worked well for me (9.04 and 9.10 had serious issues on my machine) so I'd like not to revert back to an older release just for VLC if at all possible.
For awhile I have had this issue with the command line and every time I try to complete any command that requires GTK graphics, It always returns the error "Error: cannot open display: 0:" The "EXPORT display" command that I normally use to fix this issue is not working. The only issue that I can think might be the cause for this could be my upgrade to natty (which was in fact a clean installation), or when I edited plymouth so that the startup and shutdown animations would match my laptop's native resolution (by the way I would also appreciate it if I could do the same with the startup animation, only the shutdown really works). If anybody know how I could resolve this issue I would greatly appreciate it. Oh and for specifics on my machine, I am using an ASUS N82 with an NVIDIA GEFORCE GT335M graphics card, running Ubuntu 11.04.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 10.10 last evening and all has been going well. Lucid didn't work out for me, so I used other distros. 10.10 fixed all issues except one thing. This is a need for me; e-courses I take require that I use Elluminate Live, a Java-based conference software. It runs flawlessly on every distro except Ubuntu. I had to use another PC running a different distro in order to get to a class. I really don't want to do that all the time. I thought it may be OpenJDK, but I found that Sun Java was installed and in use (I installed the extras while installing). I tried OpenJDK (worth a shot eh?) and the exact issue persists. All other programs have perfect audio.

Everytime I start an app, the task panel will for a while show a new "dummy" entry "Opening Application X", which is extremely annoying and makes no sense, since I know I'm opening it, because I just clicked on it myself.
I had recently reinstalled Kubuntu after breaking it for the n-th time and downloads will no longer open from the Downloads window of Firefox. Instead, it brings up a dialog with the title Launch Application and asks me which application I should open it with. This seems to happen all of the file formats I have tried; namely pdf, zip, deb, and png. This did not happen from before the reinstallation.

The video unfreezes when I move the mouse, the video then fastforwards to the actual replay position. Video card is nvidia geforce fx5200 on proprietary driver, I have the desktop effects enabled. Any idea what this is about? I discovered the effects causing wine windows to break (no window contents, no foreground, no reaction on mouse) when changing the desktops or minimizing them. View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been goign nuts trying to find the source of this niggling problem I've had since upgrading to Maverick. Whenever I'm watching anything I will get these short freezes of about half a second before he file continues playing. It will happen on average 3-4 times per hour on a video file.
For MP3 playback it's even worse, I'll get a stutter every couple of minutes, sometimes several in the same song. I reformatted completely and installed Maverick from scratch. For about a day I thought I had it sorted but then it started happening again.
I checked dmesg and there are a number of worrying lines like this:

The thing is that this problem occurs on all three of my hard drives (2 SATA, one IDE) so it's extremely unlikely all three have become damaged on the day I updated. Could this be a kernel problem of some sort? On an unrelated note all but one of my USB ports fails to recognise any portable music players.
I have a very fresh and basic install of the weekly jessie build (this week). I've installed nvidia drivers, some non-free plugins, virtualbox, basic system tools, etc. The issue is while playing in audacious, the song will freeze for about 5 seconds. It's always around 5 seconds. Sometimes it's once or twice per song, sometimes I'll play 10 songs without it happening. BTW, all music is on a separate hard drive on an NTFS partition.
In audacious, I'm using the Winamp skin. I noticed when trying to play for the first time, it wouldn't play unless I changed the setting in audacious to use ALSA. That was the only way I could go to Settings and select my SPDIF digital output. But then doing that, other sounds no longer worked (in iceweasel). So I downloaded pavu, was able to select my onboard digital stereo output, set audacious back to pulse audio, and everything now works. Only issue is audacious is freezing every now and then... Is there a driver or module that I need to check for? Is there a way to get everything to use ALSA?
I once tried AV Linux for the low latency kernel but since it was based on Wheezy and I wasn't familiar with repos, everything was extremely outdated, so I migrated away. Should I need an LL kernel for 320kbps audio playback? I haven't sat and watched a full mkv yet, some of those have 1.5mpbs audio.
I'm looking into building a media server that will output to 2 channels. I'd like to use Ubuntu however, if there's a better alternative, I'd be open to using it. I'd have 2 audio and video cards for output and what I'm interested in knowing is if there's a way to set the audio output to a specific card per application or workspace. Is there an easy way of doing this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) on a five year old desktop computer with no problems what-so-ever until that is when i try to use aMSN. The aMSN program is great and problems only arise when i try to configure the audio and webcam. When i open up Preferences -> Edit audio and video settings and try to configure the audio and webcam everything just freezes solid and the only way i can un-freeze the computer is to disconnect the plug from the power connection.
On other occasions when i have again attempted to configure the audio and webcam the whole aMSN program just vanishes off the screen altogether? I have a Logitech QuickCam 8.1.1

I currently have my desktop setup with two displays, one of them being my living room tv that I run Boxee on. My problem is that all the audio runs through the same speakers preventing me from listening to music or gaming at the same time as when Boxee is in use.
I would like to know if it's possible to split the audio so that an application of my choosing only outputs sound through my headphones. I was thinking it would be possible with some of the controls in pulse, but if it is I cannot figure it out.
I switched to OpenSUSE last month, and so far so good.But one thing that I haven't found yet is a CD ripping program. Yeah, I know, Amarok and K3B will both do it, but both seem a bit fiddly to configure and both are massive programs and seem to be over the top for what I want. When I used Ubuntu/Gnome I used GRip, and latterly RipperX, both of which do pretty much what it says on the tin - they rip CDs. And that's it. I'd prefer this kind of approach than the 'everything plus the kitchen sink' that I get with Amarok and K3B.Is there any kind of lightweight CD ripper in the OpenSUSE repos?

My wife is reluctant to move from WinXP so I started my own personal campain to promote fedora at home but my wife complains that I "spend too much time fidling with the thing(PC)" and that "it wasn't the case with WinXP" so I =was looking for ways to impress my wife with fedora's capabilities so I flashed her with compiz and dual screen using our old 52" projection tv as a DVR but rhe problem is that my daughter want to watch her DVDs and my wife want to watch a ..... video.I have a system with two Sound card one embedded on the main board and one on a PCI slot and what I am trying to achive is haveing two applications, like two instances of VLC play their sound on the souncard I select per instance, or one Sound card playing VLC and the other playing a ..... video's sound.
I have looked at pulse audio properties and it detects both of my sound cards just fine and it plays wonderfully on either but that is just it... it will pay on either but not both.I have read that you can configure pulse audio to use your second sound card as sorround or duplicate audio but the idea is dicrete audio from dicrete application. Is there such an use case already supported by pulseaudio?So there might be a solution if I disable Pulse Audio but I rather not but I'm open to either.
