View 1 RepliesI can gnome-open or eog a .jpg file in terminal command window in the gui mode. But when I use console, this commands doesn't open them up but instead gives an error. I want to try opening images, text files, videos, music in console mode, but the commands eog and gnome-open don't work here.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu Lucid on my computer a few weeks ago (fresh install, formatted). But recently I've been having some problems.
This is about the 4th time it happens. When I randomly open a program, sometimes the whole computer will just freeze. I can't change to a terminal window with Ctrl-Alt-F1,2,3,4 or anything. I can only press the Reset button on the computer case. This is frustrating because I already lost ALL my firefox settings and addons and I don't want anything like this to keep on happening.
The problem was: *drumroll* the POWER SOURCE.
Apparently the voltage was having little drops and this caused all the hardware to freeze. This caused the system operation to be WORSE after I bought the new graphics card (since it was bigger and needed more power). I bought a new powersource and installed it and it seems everything is alright now.
Since upgrading to 10.10 when switching to evolution calendar, my Netbook freezes, completely. Not just the calendar, but the whole interface and I must shut the machine off to escape. I use the Gnome desktop (not the silly netbook one . I can't find any other references to this in the forums, does any one know if this is a known bug? or there is a fix? it isn't listed in the sticky at the top of the general forum.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 and have been unable to switch to console mode (Ctrl+Alt+Fx key combo). The system just freezes on attempt (not even capslock on off works) and the only option is hard reset. I am on a SONY VAIO VGN-CR353, just in case.
View 4 Replies View RelatedIf I start skipping through a movie or song that's playing, sometimes the program will totally freeze. It stops playing audio and video altogether. Similarly, if for instance I'm listening to a music playlist, often times when VLC skips to the next track it stops playing audio, but continues through the track like it's still playing. Once it reaches the end of the first track it had a problem with, it freezes altogether and I have to close the program. In fact, the program stays running even after I "x" out of it, and I have to kill the process in system monitor and restart VLC in order to restore functionality. This happens quite often (as in, a few times a day), and as I'm sure you can imagine, this gets quite annoying, lol.
I've looked in the various logs in Log Viewer, but I don't see any obvious problems. There are no error messages pertaining to VLC, or audio or video output so far as I can tell. I've also tried reinstalling VLC to no avail. I think the next thing I'll try is to remove it completely first, and then reinstall it....but if that doesn't work, is there anything else you guys think I should be looking at? Lucid is the first Ubuntu release that's worked well for me (9.04 and 9.10 had serious issues on my machine) so I'd like not to revert back to an older release just for VLC if at all possible.
I would like to kindly ask you for some advice. Allmost a month I am experiencing strange behaviour of the system. I use Debian Wheezy 64bit on Intel Core i3 processor, SSD hadr drive, 4GB ram. Problem is, that sometimes the system becomes very slow when booting kernel, the kernel booting stops for 5-8 seconds on something (timimng, Processor initialization or something related, but not always the same thing) and then the system is booting noticeable slower than usual and when in the graphic environment (I use gnome) everything seems to be slower than usual, the typing in console is slow with lags and videos (movies) are not watchable due to freezes and lags.
I was trying to figure out what is causing it, the only thing I came up with is, that when I wait 10-15 sec in grub menu before selecting the kernel and after some time I manualy hit enter, it usualy boots fast and with no additional issues in the system. Sometimes it boots up normally even without this longer waiting time, but sometimes not. It is strange.
i am using Fedora 14. Once system get hanged during opening a video file so I had to restart the system by pressing restart button. But after restarting there are few problems appearing like system monitor not opening and Thunder bird opening but not showing any folder including inbox.

View 6 Replies View RelatedWe are having a cluster with couple of disk servers, compute nodes and a head node. Disk server is nfs mounted on all the compute and head nodes.
The problem is that if any of the disk servers hangs, it freezes rest of the cluster too which is dangerous. Ideally, cluster should not care about the hanged server and run without any problem except files from that server is not visible.
Is there any way I could avoid the problem of freezing cluster because of one hanged server?

View 4 Replies View RelatedAlright, so we have a customer that we plan on hooking up 2 Atom Nettops to TVs and having them display meal menus through powerpoint on them. They didn't come with Windows licenses and we are wanting to keep this cost low, so that's why we are doing this through Ubuntu. The plan so far is to ftp the .ppt file to each of the computers from a main Windows machine. I have the FTP servers up and running fine as well as VNC on both machines in case we need to access them. The path to the .ppt will remain static all the time so the filename and path will not change. Let's say it's called menu.ppt and it's located on the desktop of the user "user". I also have the 2 boxes automatically logging into the desktop. How can I launch this .ppt file on startup so that I don't have to touch the computer, just turn it on, and this menu.ppt will open and start playing? Or at the very least, open in OpenOffice or something of the sort and all the client has to do is VNC in and hit F5.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running 9.04 jaunty. I made a file in gimp and saved it as .xcf. I want it to be a pdf file, so I try opening it with open office drawing, but it keeps opening it with the word processor instead. The word processor starts the file if I do a right-click 'open with' on the file on my desktop, and even if I use open from the file menu in drawing itself. I'm wondering what to do to get drawing to open this file. Is it that .xcf is not supported by drawing?
