Ubuntu :: Startup Application Opening Behind Task Bars?

May 11, 2011

im building a small wallboard machine, using ubuntu 10.10 as 11.4 refuses to load correctly on any of my spare machines.but, anyway, thats not the issue, ive installed chromium-browser, and added it to the startup applications with

Code:

chromium-browser -kiosk http://wallboard
where http://wallboard is the wallboard info thats being displayed.

that works, BUT the browser is opening BEHIND the top 'menu' bar, and the bottom 'task' bar, which obviously, is not what i want. how do i set it to either hide these 'bars' or open the browser in front of them like it does if i manually run the command from a terminal?

Ubuntu :: Disable "opening Application X" Notification In Gnome Task Panel?

Oct 15, 2010

How can I disable that, please?
Everytime I start an app, the task panel will for a while show a new "dummy" entry "Opening Application X", which is extremely annoying and makes no sense, since I know I'm opening it, because I just clicked on it myself.

Ubuntu :: Changing Resolution In VMware Messed Up Task Bars

Jan 29, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 with VMware Workstation 6.5.0. The install went fine and I ran the updates and everything was working great. Then I decided to change the resolution to something a little larger that was actually workable and after a restart my taskbars were all messed up. I deleted that machine and then opened up the backup. I changed the resolution again and after a restart, same result. I've tried it with multiple resolutions with different aspect ratios all with the same results. I've included a link below with a screen shot of the desktop so you can see what it's doing. Now, it's not unusable but distracting to me nonetheless.

General :: Display Stretched With No Task Bars Showing

May 21, 2011

i have a hp laptop with a cracked screen so i'm using and external monitor. It is an HP vs15c. Now it was working fine.. perfect even.. until i was working on a second virus infect pc in bed with the keyboard connection to this pc next to me. What happened next is a bit embarrassing and also why i have no idea what i did or how to fix it. Well i found the virus in the laptop i was repairing (god i hate vista.) when i wiggled in excitement .. only the keyboard slide under my breast and the next thing i know my screen looks stretched and i have no bars. i can move my mouse beyond the right and the bottom edges of the screen and i can't change anything cause i can't get any option.. or least i don't know how to get them without the bars.. i can't even reboot if i wanted to cause my task bar is GONE. the bottom active bar is there.. off screen where i can see it but if i drag my mouse down far enough it is there to click on things. However the top bar that i need is gone. I am NOT good with terminal.. nor do i know how to open it without the top task bar. Right now i'm cursing a storm and being very angry about being a woman.

Nov 16, 2010

My file manager keeps on opening in the taskbar and it will not stop, but no application comes up, only in the taskbar. No icons will show up on my desktop either. When I go to open up the file manager, nothing comes up. Even when I try nautilus or sudo nautilus nothing happens. I read on another forum to use gconf-editor and nothing fixed it. What do I do? I need to have my computer fixed for school. I am running Ubuntu x86 64-bit on a HP Pavilion tx2500z laptop.

General :: Theme In Ubuntu Not Applied To Menu Bars At Startup

May 30, 2010

The theme I have chosen in Ubuntu 10.04 (Ambiance with buttons in the upper right-hand corner) is not applied to the menu bars at boot/login. Menu and title bars should be very dark with a white font. When I boot the computer, the application title bar is correctly formatted, but the main menu bar of gnome and the menu bars of all applications are black font on gray background. When I open the theme selection (in German Einstellungen | Erscheinungsbild, in English likely something like Preferences | Appearance).

The correct theme is applied to menu bars without that I have to select the theme again; simply opening the Appearance dialog suffices. First I did not name my modified theme (showed up as first theme in the theme selection dialog, user modified). In trying to solve the above issue I gave the theme a name, but the strange behaviour persists. Where I can make the theme automatically and completely applied at boot.

Ubuntu :: Opening A .ppt Presentation At Startup

Jan 15, 2010

Alright, so we have a customer that we plan on hooking up 2 Atom Nettops to TVs and having them display meal menus through powerpoint on them. They didn't come with Windows licenses and we are wanting to keep this cost low, so that's why we are doing this through Ubuntu. The plan so far is to ftp the .ppt file to each of the computers from a main Windows machine. I have the FTP servers up and running fine as well as VNC on both machines in case we need to access them. The path to the .ppt will remain static all the time so the filename and path will not change. Let's say it's called menu.ppt and it's located on the desktop of the user "user". I also have the 2 boxes automatically logging into the desktop. How can I launch this .ppt file on startup so that I don't have to touch the computer, just turn it on, and this menu.ppt will open and start playing? Or at the very least, open in OpenOffice or something of the sort and all the client has to do is VNC in and hit F5.

Ubuntu :: Error - Cannot Open Display - 0 - When Opening Any GTK Application From The Terminal

May 13, 2011

For awhile I have had this issue with the command line and every time I try to complete any command that requires GTK graphics, It always returns the error "Error: cannot open display: 0:" The "EXPORT display" command that I normally use to fix this issue is not working. The only issue that I can think might be the cause for this could be my upgrade to natty (which was in fact a clean installation), or when I edited plymouth so that the startup and shutdown animations would match my laptop's native resolution (by the way I would also appreciate it if I could do the same with the startup animation, only the shutdown really works). If anybody know how I could resolve this issue I would greatly appreciate it. Oh and for specifics on my machine, I am using an ASUS N82 with an NVIDIA GEFORCE GT335M graphics card, running Ubuntu 11.04.
