Ubuntu Security :: How To Ask For A Password In Opening An Application
Jan 21, 2011
I just would like to know how to ask for a password in opening an application in ubuntu. The scenario is like in opening any application from system administration and the system will ask for a password to execute the application.

Is there a way to do this? I disabled the log in screen for my Ubuntu 10.10 for convenience with remote desktop (so the machine starts up right away and connect to vnc). But doing this means anybody at my house can just access my computer and application (brother's friends are a little curious) and they could easily access Keyring and grab all my passwords. So is there a way to require a password everytime an application is opened?

Ubuntu 11.04
Gnome 2.32.1
Weird little problem. I've bookmarked several network locations but when I try to open them, for some reason the Decibel Audio Player application opens. And if I use the "Connect to Server", it opens Brasero.

im building a small wallboard machine, using ubuntu 10.10 as 11.4 refuses to load correctly on any of my spare machines.but, anyway, thats not the issue, ive installed chromium-browser, and added it to the startup applications with
Code:
chromium-browser -kiosk http://wallboard
where http://wallboard is the wallboard info thats being displayed.
that works, BUT the browser is opening BEHIND the top 'menu' bar, and the bottom 'task' bar, which obviously, is not what i want. how do i set it to either hide these 'bars' or open the browser in front of them like it does if i manually run the command from a terminal?

For awhile I have had this issue with the command line and every time I try to complete any command that requires GTK graphics, It always returns the error "Error: cannot open display: 0:" The "EXPORT display" command that I normally use to fix this issue is not working. The only issue that I can think might be the cause for this could be my upgrade to natty (which was in fact a clean installation), or when I edited plymouth so that the startup and shutdown animations would match my laptop's native resolution (by the way I would also appreciate it if I could do the same with the startup animation, only the shutdown really works). If anybody know how I could resolve this issue I would greatly appreciate it. Oh and for specifics on my machine, I am using an ASUS N82 with an NVIDIA GEFORCE GT335M graphics card, running Ubuntu 11.04.

I have a laptop with 2 partitions . The second partition is called 'Data' and is for storing files. Every time I want to access it, I have to enter the root password. This is not a big deal but its tiresome when trying to run a program like Picasa. The folders where the pictures are located are in the data partition and if I forget to mount the partition, then the folders are not accessed under Picasa. How can I avoid entering the password every time. The data partition would be better opened automatically when the laptop boots up

I switched from Windows XP to Ubuntu, I zipped a large number of important files, giving them a CIA-grade password. Is there a WinZip clone available for Ubuntu that will enable me to open those password-protected files? Or can I only do the unzipping on another Windows machine?

I know this has probably been asked too many times here but I need to secure my emails. Personal matters of course. But yeah. I use the program "Password and Encryption Keys" to generate a key to sign my emails with but I do not know what to do. To be blunt, I'm stupid when it comes to this. IF not, steps in creating a key? and giving it (my public key) to the significant other? Finding where both keys are? Implementing it into Thunderbird? If it helps any here's some extra information: Ubuntu distro: Ubuntu 10.04 Email client: Thunderbird

After upgrading to 9.10 I am having trouble opening my old files encrypted with pgp. My keyring is still on the computer as I did an update and not a clean install. The problem is that I get a message saying that there is no pgp/mime program installed to open the file. Which program should I install to fix this?

I already posted a topic similar to this concerning the Desktop OS version, but this deals with the Netbook because unlike the Desktop, the Netbook is less cooperative. Allow me to elaborate: Today (or rather yesterday since it's not after midnight where I am), I changed my password because I was hopelessly confounded about how to get my Wireless Network card up and running after it had been installed and I was allowing my dad to use it. This issue has since been resolved, however...
When I chose my password during the original installation, there was no mention of it being "too simple." This is where the Desktop OS and the Netbook OS differ. The desktop will let me change it in the terminal without any errors. The Netbook will not. When I've attempted to revert it back to the original, it will not let me do so in the User Profile or in the Terminal. The Passwords and Encryption Keys application also does not appear to help.
So now even after I've changed it to a different "complicated" password I am still prompted to insert two different passwords since I changed my user password but I am unable to change the password I input during the installation. A bit screwy methinks. This is extremely important. I'd like to know how to change the original installation password.
If I can't change the main password on my laptop then this is a serious potential security breach just waiting to happen (especially since it's on a laptop and I will be hauling it around with me) and I will most likely install a different OS if this isn't resolved --- It would be very unfortunate since I spent the whole day fixing it and I really enjoy the interface. Luckily I can live with this on my Desktop since I'm not going to be hauling it around with me everywhere when the school year starts.

I have a database created by an older program (not Access) that I need to open and retrieve information for my business. The manufacturer put a password on there so that only it's program could open it. I do not use that program, but it has information I need. Is there a way to find that password or circumvent the password altogether?

How do you open a program, in this instance "Zenmap", from the desktop in a user account when it requires root privileges? Is there a way to be prompted for the password, the same way, for instance, you're prompted when mounting a new file system or making a change to the system? I tried entering 'sudo /usr/bin/zenmap' when creating the shortcut, however that didn't work.

I'm currently using Slackware 13.0 and have my machine behind a Linksys DD-WRT router. I believe the DD-WRT software has all ports blocked by default so opening up my machine for SSH login would only leave my system vulnerable at that port. To give an extra layer of security for that opened port, I've created the following script that would be invoked as the users' shell.
#!/bin/sh
#if SSH_CLIENT defined run nail with $SSH_CLIENT as an argument
if [[ -n ${SSH_CLIENT} ]]; then
[code]....

How can I disable that, please?
Everytime I start an app, the task panel will for a while show a new "dummy" entry "Opening Application X", which is extremely annoying and makes no sense, since I know I'm opening it, because I just clicked on it myself.

I had recently reinstalled Kubuntu after breaking it for the n-th time and downloads will no longer open from the Downloads window of Firefox. Instead, it brings up a dialog with the title Launch Application and asks me which application I should open it with. This seems to happen all of the file formats I have tried; namely pdf, zip, deb, and png. This did not happen from before the reinstallation.

my son is 15, autistic and mentally retarded. he is moderate-low functioning and loves to watch barney the dinosaur, thomas the tank engine and other young children's programming on videos on his computer. he can talk in a limited way and can read out loud at about the first-grade level, though he seems to have little or no comprehension of what he's read (hyperlexia).i'm having problems with viruses and spyware because he lacks the judgment that keeps the rest of us from clicking on every window that pops up. we've had a particularly nasty crop of ad-ware viruses lately that pops up graphic porn ads even when the browser is closed. i've had enough of this.
the computer is an ancient dell dimension 4600 desktop (circa ~2002) running windows xp. i've run ubuntu from a live cd and installed flash as a test. videos videos play fine, so that's not a problem. i don't really want to replace the computer becasue it still works and is only used by him to run firefox. i am willing to buy a new computer if that turns out to be the only option.i've been using ubuntu exclusively on my laptop for several years and i would like to remove windows from his computer and replace it with ubuntu. i'm wondering how i can make his computer as accessible as possible to him while not sacrificing too much security.my son has very poor fine motor control over his hands. he can use a mouse with some difficulty, but using a keyboard is out of the question. he can use the mouse to click on the shortcuts to his favorite videos, but i can't think of how he would be able to enter a password for his account. not only does he have the fine motor problem, but he is not able to remember any usefully secure password.
does anyone have any ideas about how to make his computer accessible to him without opening a gaping security hole? two ideas that i've kicked around are creating a user with absolutely the minimum privileges required to use firefox and no password or finding some way to enter a password that doesn't require a keyboard. i haven't come up with how to implement either of those ideas successfully.

I installed Ubuntu Server 10.10 with the GUI on a spare box I had. This is my first experience with Ubuntu. I have never used Linux before this. The system works great and logging on is no problem. However I installed 2 applications, gparted and samba. When I go to open either application I enter my logon password and I am told that the password is not correct. I am the only user on this machine and went to the accounts setting and changed my account type from custom to administrator to no avail.
I formatted my drive and reinstalled the whole thing again and got all available updates also. I reinstalled gparted and samba a second time on the new install and I still am told that the password is incorrect again when opening thes apps. Is there a simple, easy to understand way for this first time Ubuntu 10.10 user to correct this. There must be a minor flaw in this OS that is denying me use of my apps.
