Ubuntu :: Update / Run Terminal Or Synaptic Error "_cache->open() Failed"
Mar 2, 2010
I switched to Ubuntu a few months back and now have a problem I can't figure out and would like a little guidance. When trying to run Terminal or Synaptic I get the following error... E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
I installed Ubuntu some days ago. It is really great, so much better then Vista But, Ive got a small problem. When I try to install/update software, I get the following error:Quote:E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report. It is very annoying, since I cant install software now
I am trying to run Ubuntu 10.04 amd64. And Ubuntu typically is stable for me dispute all windows installs get BSOD. Graphic card is nvidia geforce 8400. more details will be included in system section
Index:CauseSymptomsSystem
Cause: 3-5 days ago I updated my computer that had not been updated for 2-4 days using synaptic. I had no error warnings so I decided to reboot (I might have used alt ctrl delete to restart). After restart I received the standard prompt that occurs when the graphics driver is having problems. The screen with the options: run low graphics mode, reconfig graphics, ..., restartx.
I tried low graphics. Eventually I boot to netroot. In net root I tried messing with nvidia driver packages not modalias. and messing with xorg.conf using nvidia-xconfig. Also attempted to change drivers using update-alternatives --config gl_conf those are where I messed and possibly exacerbated the problem (but probably not by much)(but I have had nvidia-current driver problems before due to updates that make me decide to reinstall).
Symptoms: The command startx returns no errors that I can tell from the log but startx stops. gdm (in netroot) returns cant find user list (cant readily recall the exact name but sounds like the password and names of users). Then some graphics errors. Most gtk and X programs/commands return the error x window cant open. and gtkbox (the gtk test program I will correct later) returned an error at ".run priority 0". Not when the same command was called with no priority explicity stated.
System: Hardware: user built. Amd Athlon II x3 435. ECS IC780M-A2 (V1.0A) EliteGroup motherboard. 2Gb ram. 500gb linux HDD. 40GB xp 32bit. grub2 boot. Software: ubuntu 10.04 amd64. Sources partners and some APPs.
I suspect the initial cause (before I monkeyed around) was that one of the lib packages that was updated in that session made my computer unstable. Also to note I removed a lot of lib packages in netroot thru the autoremove command. If not one of the lib packaged one of the others that were updated (I wish I could find out what was changed so I could at least undo it manually (in theory).
synaptic tells me: "you must manually run sudo dpkg configure -a to correct the problem"
update manager tells me the same thing but also that the software index is broken. And it offered a partial upgrade but it doesnt work or do anything just gets me the aformentioned error message.
I think this was all cause by me interrupting the last update process by pressing cancel, because it froze or something.
Whenever I boot my fedora 12, even before asking me for my login name, etc., there comes a message saying "Can't update IECauthority file : /var/gdb/.IECauthority" and hangs at the place. Even the mouse doesn't move. If I were able to open the terminal somehow, perhaps by changing the file permissions, I could get something. Also, when I boot from ubuntu 9.10 and try seeing what's in the /var directory of fedora, it doesn't show anything, even if I display the hidden files. If the directory gdb doesn't exist, why is it showing the error ?
Any time i try to install anything from terminal or synaptic i get this error message saying:
Or if i try to upgrade:
If i try to open the software-center the cursor changes but it does not open. This all started when it upgraded to Karmic Koala. There might be two seperate issues but i cannot install or uninstall at all.
when I run synaptic I can open the list of apps. and select but then I apply to download and get "error we failed to fetch etc etc." Seems to be an rpm problem but not sure. ????
after initating the update and i enter my pass word, update stops and an error box comes up stating that it is unable to update because there is more than one synaptic manager running, i have restarted and get the same results, and to my knowledge there is nothing else running in the background.
Ever time I try to use Update Manager or Synaptic Package Manager I get this Error Message:
I have been wondering if I just need to do a fresh install. Am currently using 9.10 on a Compaq laptop which is prone to overheating and "freezing", usually within 2 hours. Maybe time to install 10.04?
Yesterday I tried upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 using the upgrade manager. About half way through, my computer froze up and the only thing I could do was reboot my computer. It had already finished downloading all the upgrades and the computer froze while it was trying to install the upgrades. When I boot my computer and the Grub screen appears, I chose the Ubuntu OS (I have a dual boot system of Ubuntu and Windows XP). When it goes to boot Ubuntu, it gives me a blank screen and then a box in the right hand corner that says this: "Install problem! The configuration defaults for GNOME Power Manager have not been installed correctly. Please contact your computer administrator."
Then the screen remains blank. No cursor, no mouse pointer, nothing. I have researched this error message and it is either caused by not having any free space on my hard drive or that the upgrade packages weren't installed properly. In my case, it could be both. It is definitely the packages not be installed properly but I don't know how to find out if there is no free space on the hard drive partition for Ubuntu. Some of the solutions are to use the following commands in the terminal: sudo apt-get clean sudo dpkg --configure -a sudo apt-get --reinstall install ubuntu-desktop
The last command might cause me to lose previous settings, so that would be a last resort if the first two commands don't work. So my main issue is that I cannot open a terminal. My computer is set up to automatically log in. When my computer boots, I have the Grub screen which allows me to choose the Ubuntu OS, Ubuntu in recovery mode or Windows Xp. However, when I choose Ubuntu in recovery mode and select "c" for the command line, it does not recognize the "sudo" command. Same when I choose the command line in the regular Ubuntu OS. When I type "sudo apt-get clean" (without quotes), it says "Sudo command not found." I cannot find the command lines that would be the equivalent of a "sudo" command to use in recovery mode.
If you hit the TAB key while in the command line of recovery mode, if gives a list of commands but I don't see a way to open up a terminal window. For example, when I type terminal_input, it just says, Active: Console, Available: usb_keyboard." I have also tried selecting the Ubuntu OS, waiting for it to boot and then hitting Ctrl+Alt+F1 but it does not give me a log in screen. I have tried Ctrl+Alt+F2 and Ctrl+Alt+F7 and neither of those give me a log in screen either. It is just a blank screen. No cursor or mouse pointer is visible. All I want is the ability to open up the terminal so I can run "sudo apt-get clean" and "sudo dpkg --configure -a".
while trying to open synaptic package manager i get the following errer "E: The package clamav-daemon needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it. E: Internal error opening cache (1). Please report."
Today i upgraded my system and started getting error when i update, install or remove a package. The error isn't restricted only to one repository so i thing something is wrong with my system.
Since upgrading to Natty I have a very annoying issue and since I am unable to resolveWhenever I start the synaptics package manager I get the following message:An error occurred:E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report.Once I run sudo dpkg --configure -a from the terminal this is what I get:Setting up xulrunner-1.9.1 (1.9.1.18~hg20110309r27352+nobinonly-0ubuntu1~umd1) ...No further progress the machine hangs indefinitely on this, need to kill terminal to exit. Even hours waiting does not show any progress.

I did an automatic update and rebooted this morning and I now have a bit of a nightmare situation where I can't open the majority of applications, including the terminal. When I rebooted, my desktop loaded as normal, but then when I try to open the terminal (from Applications -> Accessories or from my quick launch panel), nothing happens other than the quick launch panel disappears for a second then reappears. This is the case for most other apps, but not for Chrome (obviously).
EDIT: Used Alt+F2 to open the terminal, ran safe upgrade and then rebooted, but still having the same issue. As Ubuntu was booting, there was a "Broken pipe" message, which didn't stop the boot process but is still a bit worrying. I've run a file system check but this hasn't resolved the problem either.

I'm installing and configuring my first server using RackSpace CloudServers running Ubuntu Karmic Koala (9.10) and I'm now installing iRedMail. The installation runs successfully until I recieve this error:
Code: The following packages have unmet dependencies: mysql-server-5.0: Depends: mysql-server-core-5.0 (>= 5.1.30really5.0.83-0ubuntu3) but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages < ERROR > Installation failed, please check the terminal output. I understand this is telling me there is some software that iRedMail (or something iRedMail is dependant upon) that needs installed. Is this correct? And if so, what is i needing installed and how do I do that (aptitude install example-package?)?
I have an "error", its not really and error, every time I open the terminal, it shows this: Reading: command not found Building: command not found Reading: command not found *****@****-****:~$
I have ubuntu 10.04. The installation is about 3 days old. My account type is administrator. When I try to open "synaptic package manager," "root terminal," "software sources," or "firewall configuration" the window list on the panel on the bottom of the screen informs me "starting administrativ..." and then vanishes without fanfare. Clearly it would seem these programs are all dependent on something I managed to screw up.The question then is; what is it, and how can I fix it? Also note: everything works fine on the root account.
I'm getting these messages Over SSH with the -D switch
Code:
At uni I did this for a couple of reasons, primarily to connect to trackers for bittorrent. I would get these messages fairly often but I never thought much of it because I figured I was just loosing packets over the network or something (understandable in my situation). At home I decided to continue to use this method because that computer is set up in DMZ and is very useful. I havn't received many of these messages but recently all my torrents stalled and I had a whole bunch of these messages. Is it possible my computer just cant handle all the network connections (it's a 2ghz AMD running debian)? What exactly do these messages mean? Is there any way to optimize my connection in any way?
For awhile I have had this issue with the command line and every time I try to complete any command that requires GTK graphics, It always returns the error "Error: cannot open display: 0:" The "EXPORT display" command that I normally use to fix this issue is not working. The only issue that I can think might be the cause for this could be my upgrade to natty (which was in fact a clean installation), or when I edited plymouth so that the startup and shutdown animations would match my laptop's native resolution (by the way I would also appreciate it if I could do the same with the startup animation, only the shutdown really works). If anybody know how I could resolve this issue I would greatly appreciate it. Oh and for specifics on my machine, I am using an ASUS N82 with an NVIDIA GEFORCE GT335M graphics card, running Ubuntu 11.04.
My scanner is Benq 5000 ,the default scanning software (xsane) give me the following message whenever I plug the scanner to the pc : Failed to Open Device 'Snapscan:libusb:005:002' Invalid Argument. I tried the gnome image scanning software too but it didn't recognize the scanner at all. The only software that worked is vuescan but unfortunately it is non-free software !!!!
Vista refused to boot past login and eventually froze up in safe mode, preventing me from even safely copying files to a storage device. My friend suggested trying Ubuntu temporarily, and I'm currently running it as a trial from a key thob.I'm very much a newbie to the OS but after some getting used to and playing around over a few days Im happy to make the switch permanently. I managed to take off the needed files, and then went on to do some cleaning up of my harddrive to make some room for a partition for Ubuntu. I was removing things like old music, videos and games, nothing vital, but after I reset I tried to enter the C drive Im given this message:
Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 18: Failed to open hiberfil.sys data attribute: No such file or directory Failed to mount '/dev/sda2': No such file or directoryMy HD is currently partitioned for two 150gb drives, and I can still use my D drive fine for all purposes.
