Just wondering. Every time I reload packages in synaptic I always get a whole bunch of failed "InRelease" or "TranslationIndex" URIs. Is that normal? I don't need any other translations for anything, just English. Is there something I should do to remove these from even being checked in the first place?

I stucked on a weired problem in Lucid, I am trying to install a recent update i got while pressing the Reload button in synaptic is that of language-pack-gnome-en. It is not installing and saying this message :

I've read hundreds of threads on this problem but they seem to be intermittent and the resolution has been using a different kernel version.
I'm using the latest kernel but I still have this problem
Running Logical Volume Manager gui and attempting to extend the volume results in the same error.
I'd like to remove a bunch of unnessessary packages. Trouble is, I don't know what they all do. Is there a list of packages that tells what is/is not nessessary to run my system? I'm sure there are hundreds of packages (well, maybe tens of packages) that I have no use for but I don't know what they are.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm having some difficulities with truecrypt and cannot figure out what's wrong since this is my first attempt to create hidden encrypted partition. I'm using ubuntu 9.10 64b with latest 6.3a truecrypt. After using truecrypt gui (just command truecrypt) I've tried: create volume-->create volumne within a partition/drive-->hidden trucrypt volume --> select some /dev/sdX by my choice --> select aes & sha512 --> password --> and format it.
when formating finished message "wrong ss, swith or wrong superblock of /dev/loop0" appeared. I've got no idea what could I do with it neither know whats program trying to do! Ok formating's done, then if you're trying to mount that partition then I would expect prompt for password, but that did not happen ...
EDIT: sudo mount /dev/loop0 /media/tmp/ also complaint about wrong superblock, but that does not ring any bell since i've got no idea what /dev/loop0 is or is for...
EDIT2: I've tried another approach also:
sudo truecrypt -t -c
sudo truecrypt -t /dev/sda3 --filesystem=none
but the first command finished creating 100G drive in 1 sec (nonsense) and latter one prints:
Error: device-mapper: reload ioctl failed: Invalid argument

After the EOL of 0.94 clamav, I removed it stopped amavisd from having my mail scanned, and installed the new version of clamav 0.96.
But, when I try to start amavisd and send a test mail these bunch of errors appears:

I've read some posts that had no reply, someone tried to telnet to 127.0.0.1:3110 "the default port of clamd". I tried that but I got connection refused.
For some reason many packages don't show after I enter package names in quick search field. I have to find each package by scrolling through the entire list. For example, typing g++ shows only some lib file, not the C++ package. The same for automake, autoconf and libtools. Synaptic works fine in 32bit ubuntu.

A user named carlee helped me get flash working over on the absolute beginner forum, but I've got a related problem still unresolved.Update manager is convinced that my perfectly working flash installation is broken, and insists I update it.However, the update fails every time, telling me E: flashplugin-nonfree: Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should reinstall it before attempting a removal.
Opening synaptic, I cannot select the reinstall option for the plugin. Removal and complete removal are my only options, and both give the above error. More problematic, I cannot de-select the flash plugin entirely. It MUST be part of any other package update through synaptic (if I wanted to re-install avant window navigator, for example). And since the flash removal operation fails, synaptic is effectively non-operational.How can I convince my update manager that my fully operational flash is just fine the way it is?

I was trying to compile a application but was getting too many errors due to dependencies that I didn't have installed and so I tried installing them but kept getting more errors so I decided to cancel the compile altogether so I can I easily purge all of these packages?

I've just finished installing Ubuntu 11.04 on my computer. I wanted to install LAMP server, but I noticed that the option to select packages by tasks has disappeared from synaptic. Is there the option to re-enable such a feature I found it very helpul? (Don't worry about LAMP, I've already installed it following some tutorial, but I am just interested in restoring the "Select packages by task" in Synaptic).

and whatever I try by installing another printer (HP Deskjet 5550) on what used to be direct usb:/dev/usb/lp0 it succeeds but will not print. I guess because the printer URI doesn't match the serial number or usb://CB770A doesn't actually exist.
BTW I have never used a printer type CB770A! Installing the printer on other usb ports, lp1, lp2, etc., also fails to print.
Note that this Deskjet5550 works fine in Windoze and from Ubuntu 10.04 so it isn't a printer specific problem.
I have spent quite some time trying to find where the printer URIs are defined even using strace (which calls localhost so I lose trace) without success.
how I can remove/edit these ghost printer URIs?
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and during my tries to free space I've removed several packages such as: openoffice, all editors, and some more packages such as players and printers drivers that I don't need and seem o.k to remove. However, after restart, the graphical interface doesn't load, I'm in the xserver, I have console but not gui. I was wondering if anyone can tell me which packages I should not remove or let me know of dependencies I need to consider when messing with packages?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI isntalled Ubuntu 10.04 LTS in a dual boot configuration with Windows 7 (new i5 desktop, 8 GB DDR3) , and after a few gliches solved, Ubuntu runs. The problem I have is when I try to install software with the Synaptic Package Manager, no packages can be downloaded. Also, after I attempt this, no other software can connect to the Internet (even if that software was able to connect before). Rebooting restores connectivity.

it is possible for me to save/backup packages downloaded using Synaptic or the Ubuntu Software Center? Where I live (South Africa) we have seriously limited internet and I do not want to download all my extra packages again if I have to reinstall Linux for some reason.
