Ubuntu :: Startup Script To Mute The Computer?

Oct 29, 2010

I usually need to turn on my computer in a library or a classroom and it is kinda embarrassing to cause sound at the startup. Is there anyway to introduce a script to mute the computer before it creates the startup sound?

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Startup Crashes Using LiveCD On Computer

Apr 13, 2010

Whenever I try to start up using a liveCD on my computer, it crashes on me and dumps the call trace to me. This happens both on Ubuntu and Kubuntu 10.04 with similar results. I am using a Gateway(tm) GT5408 machine with a default Intel(R) BIOS built-in. At first, the booting screen shows up and seems to load, but then I find that it took too long. Whenever I pressed an arrow key, it showed a bunch of text. Most of it was talking about memory, and from what I've read, it seems like I have a bad BIOS, but I'll let other people decide on that issue. The call trace is as listed below:

Ubuntu :: Computer Won't Mount Drives On Startup After An Unexpeted Poweroff?

Jan 14, 2010

Last night there was a rather large thunderstorm, and my computer was on at the time. The power went out while my computer was on, and now it won't boot up. After the GRUB screen, a white message at the bottom of the normal loading screen says somthing along the lines of "a partition listed in /etc/fstab cannot be mounted /dev/disk/by-uuid/6835blahblahblah". I chose recovery mode from the grub menu, which gave me a similar message.

Quote:

One or more mounts listed in /etc/fstab cannot yet be mounted: (ESC for recovery shell) /home waiting for /dev/disk/by-uuid/8bl I've googled around a fair bit, but people who got the same message were mainly those upgrading to Karmic, so a different problem. I think my problem was the fact that my computer was turned off possibly while writing and definitely without being unmounted.

So far I have tried changing /etc/fstab to refer to /etc/sda5 instead of UUID=68blahblah, but that came up with the same error. I have looked inside the /dev/disk/by-uuid and the disk that is trying to be mounted is there (so it's not a problem with that).

I just reinstalled OpenSUSE 11.3 GENOME on my computer (Compaq Armada E500 w/512 MB RAM, 30GB HD, and Linksys WPG54v2 wireless card). After futzing around for several hours on two different evenings, I got it working all by myself! The only thing is,ow I have to manually connect to my wireless network every time, which gives me a a great sense of accomplishment. I start the computermber having to edit a script somewhere to make it connect automatically on system startup, but I can't remember what it is I'm supposed to edit or how I'm supposed to edit it

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - Headphones Cannot Mute Laptop Speakers

Sep 26, 2010

I'm on an IBM Thinkpad X60. When I plug either headphones or external speakers into the headphone jack (whether on the docking station or the laptop itself), the laptop speakers aren't muted. I can hear sound coming from both simultaneously. I've tried editing the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf in all kinds of ways, my most recent attempt being to add the line:

Code:
options snd-hda-intel model=thinkpad
but still with no success.

I'm using 10.04 with the 2.6.32 kernel. I tried installing the .34 kernel with no better results, so I switched back.

Ubuntu :: Mute Button Screwing Up Volume?

Mar 7, 2011

I think this is a bit of a complicated problem so bear with me while I explain it. I'm using an HP Laptop with Ubuntu 10.10. The laptop has the touch buttons for mute and volume up/down, and I use them all the time (at least when I was on Windows). I've very recently switched to Ubuntu and now those keys are causing problems with a game called Minecraft. Basically, when I'm playing it and use those keys, it brings me out of full screen (if I'm using fullscreen) and then seems to mute like it should, but the problem is, it doesn't UNmute when I press it again. The lighted button on the laptop goes back to showing its unmuted, but the game still has no sound. I've tried messing with the sound settings inside the game, and doing all these weird combos of when I mute/unmute and all, nothing seems to help. I usually have to restart the computer to fix it, but then if I use the button again, it does the same thing.

P.S. does anyone know of a way for these buttons to NOT interrupt full screen? I had the same problem with it interrupting fullscreen apps on windows, but then I used a program called 3RVX and it fixed it. Is there anything like this on linux?

Ubuntu :: Volume Mute/unmute Randomly On Its Own?

Apr 25, 2011

The volume on my computer randomly mutes/unmutes itself rapidly at unpredictable intervals. sometimes it works fine, other times it does not. I cannot find out what the problem is. I have never had this problem until recently, and this problem has surfaced in ubuntu 10.10, 10.04, 64 and 32 bit versions of the operating systems. I have used this hardware setup for a year before this problem ever surfaced. My hardware is installed and working fine, I just cannot figure out why this is happening. Does anyone know of some commands I can use to find out what is causing the volume to mute/unmute itself?

When I unmute it, it plays on both at the same time.

I can't seem to get it working properly. I've seen people with the same problem but never figured how they got it working and it usually depended on their computer brand. Anyone?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Mute Button Stopped Working?

Jul 15, 2010

In the last week, I noticed that my compaq 6710b physical controls for volume control/mute stopped working correctly. The volume control is not working anymore and the mute "unmutes" itself after precisely 1 minute.

I was wondering:

1/ did an update modify anything

2/ is there a way for me to know if the problem is physical? like a physical signal sniffer of some sort, or a log that indicates that I pressed mute

3/ Am I alone? and if not, does anyone know of a workaround?

Am running 10.4 Linux vaucher-laptop 2.6.32-23-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jun 11 08:03:28 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Ubuntu Multimedia :: PulseAudio - Mute Mic Output Through Speakers

Nov 9, 2010

I don't want to monitor my inputs. In other words: My microphone input plays through my speakers, adding a lot of undesirable noise from the mic. I can mute the mic inputs in alsamixer and/or in the Pulse volume control. This works to get the mic out of the speakers--but it also mutes my mic entirely, so I cannot record audio or use Google Talk. I want the microphone muted in my output, but available to my apps.

(I try to get on the Pulse bandwagon but it is so hard--I thought this was exactly what it was supposed to do, give easy mixing control over inputs and outputs. But I have to search for "fixes" with every single Ubuntu release for two years now, ever since it was first included. Ok, venting over, time to get it working!)

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Mute Speakers When Headphones Plugged In

Mar 9, 2011

I've been bashing my head against this problem for weeks now. The problem is that my external speakers are not being muted when I plug in headphones. I get sound through both the speakers and the headphones at the same time. This is happening on every Linux distro I've tried so far on this box, but in Windows everything behaves as expected. I've tried every option I have in both alsamixer and the Gnome sound preferences, to no avail.

Curiously, if I mute any one of the audio channels or toggle the headphone switch in alsamixer, all sound output is muted, to both the speakers and headphones. The audio chipset is a Realtek ALC888, on a Gigabyte GA-770TA-UD3 motherboard (6 jacks, optical and coaxial S/PDIF out). I must've tried a dozen different models in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, and none of them seem to make any difference at all.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Speakers Don't Mute When Headphones Plugged In - 10.10

Apr 27, 2011

I have issues with my sound board configuration. My speakers don't mute when headphones are plugged in and my mic doesn't work good.

I have being readed all kinds of forums and I found that the main issue is in that maybe the ALSA is not using the correct model.

I tried modifying the archive:

With different kinds of models but I couldn't found the right one. I tried all the Lenovo ones that I found in:[url]

My laptop is a Lenovo G455 and my sound board is an ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)

I love Ubuntu but this is bothering me since I upgrade to version 10.10.

Software :: Mute After Upgrading ALSA?

Sep 19, 2010

I didn't (maybe still don't) have ALSA loopback so I could record streaming, so I upgraded ALSA following these instructions:[URL].. The only part I didn't follow verbatim was the final step:

Quote: Allrighty, time to load it. But before that, shut down all audio apps (including firefox). Once done, do this:

Code:
sudo alsa force-unload
sudo modprobe snd-whatever-module-you-need
sudo modprobe snd-aloop
I was unsure about "snd-whatever-module-you-need" so I decided to reboot.

When KDE was just about to kick in, I saw a lot of new text I had never seen before scroll past very, very fast. Then it stopped and I could see it had something to with ALSA, but I couldn't really read anything. KDE started and... now I have no sound. I checked kmixer, it looks normal. It doesn't seem to be mute. I ran alsamixer in the command line, it doesn't seem to be mute either. I ran Kcontrol and checked the audio section, couldn't figure anything out. Here is the output of lsmod BEFORE the upgrade:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Mic Mute Button Present On Laptop Is Not Working?

May 29, 2010

I have a lenovo thinkpad and my internal microphone works only when i connect another mic through the jack. Even the mic mute button present on my laptop is not working.(There is no such problem on windows se7en) Earlier, even an external mic never used to work. After some searching i added "options snd-hda-intel model = thinkpad" to my alsa-base.conf file. And then the internal mic started working only when an external mic was connected.

when i type "cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec" i get:
Codec: Realtek ALC269
Codec: Intel G45 DEVCTG

I looked into the HD-Audio-Models.txt but couldn't locate the exact model for ALC269 so i searched online and decided to put model = thinkpad as i'd mentioned earlier. But The alsa-mixer shows card to be HDA Intel and chp as intel g45 devctg. Moreover, even this partial working of mic(s) is when i choose the input source in the alsamixer to be front mic and not int mic.
