Ubuntu :: Task Bars Gone After Upgrade
May 1, 2011
I have just upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04 and after the restart I lost everything in my top task bar (all I have is a blue strip) and I don't have a side task bar at all(just the space where it should be). Has anyone got any idea how to get them back?

im building a small wallboard machine, using ubuntu 10.10 as 11.4 refuses to load correctly on any of my spare machines.but, anyway, thats not the issue, ive installed chromium-browser, and added it to the startup applications with
Code:
chromium-browser -kiosk http://wallboard
where http://wallboard is the wallboard info thats being displayed.
that works, BUT the browser is opening BEHIND the top 'menu' bar, and the bottom 'task' bar, which obviously, is not what i want. how do i set it to either hide these 'bars' or open the browser in front of them like it does if i manually run the command from a terminal?

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 with VMware Workstation 6.5.0. The install went fine and I ran the updates and everything was working great. Then I decided to change the resolution to something a little larger that was actually workable and after a restart my taskbars were all messed up. I deleted that machine and then opened up the backup. I changed the resolution again and after a restart, same result. I've tried it with multiple resolutions with different aspect ratios all with the same results. I've included a link below with a screen shot of the desktop so you can see what it's doing. Now, it's not unusable but distracting to me nonetheless.

i have a hp laptop with a cracked screen so i'm using and external monitor. It is an HP vs15c. Now it was working fine.. perfect even.. until i was working on a second virus infect pc in bed with the keyboard connection to this pc next to me. What happened next is a bit embarrassing and also why i have no idea what i did or how to fix it. Well i found the virus in the laptop i was repairing (god i hate vista.) when i wiggled in excitement .. only the keyboard slide under my breast and the next thing i know my screen looks stretched and i have no bars. i can move my mouse beyond the right and the bottom edges of the screen and i can't change anything cause i can't get any option.. or least i don't know how to get them without the bars.. i can't even reboot if i wanted to cause my task bar is GONE. the bottom active bar is there.. off screen where i can see it but if i drag my mouse down far enough it is there to click on things. However the top bar that i need is gone. I am NOT good with terminal.. nor do i know how to open it without the top task bar. Right now i'm cursing a storm and being very angry about being a woman.

I have an issue with my task bars. My task bar that shows my active applications is on the bottom, the expand is disabled and auto hide is enabled. The task bar that has Applications, System, Places, and so on is on the top with the same preference settings. However every time I restart my system both task bars are at the top.

Is there a way to move the side and or top task bars as well as change there properties (auto hide). I know how to add programs to the side bar but can't figure out how to change the top bar menus. When I ran 32bit thru a windows vm I had a top bar where I could access the programs and no side bar. I liked it better than the 2 bar setup in my 64bit wubi install. Can it be changed?

After upgrading to Natty from the previous version and switching to Ubuntu Classic my compiz settings were completely wiped out. No problem, I just re-entered them. The problem is that I don't get any menu bar on my windows. It also happens once in a while in Metacity but using the compiz fusion icon utility to reload the window manager will usually fix the issue. I have had this problem intermittently in the past but have always been able to resolve it by reloading the window manager. Now when I'm using compiz I ALWAYS have this issue and it makes compiz unusable. Compiz is not just eye-candy for me, it has become integral to the way I use my computer. If anyone has any ideas I'm all ears.

When I upgraded to 11.04, Ubuntu classic works fine. However, when I log into the Unity Ubuntu, all that shows up is the background, and Desktop Items. No task bar at the top (containing the time, shutdown etc) or side panel bar, with the shortcut items. Now, while I was using 10.10, I installed 11.04 as a clean install on a different partition of my laptop. Therefore I have the system requirements. However, the upgraded 11.04 causes Unity issues.

After upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 all of a sudden, the task manager or task bar, keeps changing length. The individual window "buttons" themselves keep changing size - flashing even, and the space between them also changes. It is driving me nuts! The little system tray(?) icons no longer appear in the system tray, but all stacked on top of each other in the top left corner.

I recently upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and all went well once I found the trick to force the upgrade to a beta version. (Subject of a previous post) However now having switched the PC back on after 2/3 days of not touching it, I have nothing in the top and bottom menu bars, just the icons on the desktop for the CD and a shared drive (Machine is dual boot XP/Ubuntiu courtesy of Wubi). I have my task list in evolution (mainly so it can sync with my phone and online task list) but I always forget to look at the task list. Is there an application or plugin which periodically displays the contents of the tasklist or even better, it briefly displays the most urgent/important tasks when I login? Or anything else which automatically displays the most important tasks. Currently I have to open the task list and look at them (which I usually forget). I do not mean some kind of alarm when the task is due but more a daily reminder of what to do.

I've been running Xubuntu for the past month or two on my Acer Aspire One netbook with very few problems, and generally I've been happy. But this morning, I went to boot up my netbook to check my email and when it booted, I got to my desktop, but the bars at the top and bottom of the desktop are missing. I thought at first that it was hanging during the loading of Xubuntu and that there was a serious problem at hand that might've demanded a reinstall of Xubuntu, but upon further study once I got back to my campus, I discovered that the bars have simply disappeared and that everything else runs fine. When I try to click "Panel" in "Settings", which I'm assuming is where I'd adjust settings for said bars, nothing comes up.
As I think about it, it doesn't seem like a major problem, considering everything else still seems to function fine, but I would like to have them back again.

Whenever I boot into Ubuntu Karmic, the visual effects are turned off and any window I open has no title bar.The cursor keeps displaying the Busy wheel, even if nothing's happening. I have to go into Appearances and manually set my visual effects.I don't know how this happened, but it started around the time I installed CompizConfig.Karmic Koala, 1.6GHZ Intel Atom processor, 1GB RAM, dual-booting with Windows XP.

I didn't like the bar on top so I switched it to be on the bottom while the bottom bar was still there. On top of that, I wasn't thinking and dropped the pixel size for the bar from 24 to 23. I guess I assumed that the bars would either combine or one would be replaced; I don't know. But now I can't use anything from either bar, even though it shows some of the information from the first one. When I click it, it doesn't do anything. It's "under" the other bar, so to speak, rendering both of them useless.
Luckily I am dual-booting from Win7, so I can still use my system. I noticed that Ubuntu loads much slower than Win7, which really surprised me. It could be that the drivers need to be installed on Ubuntu, but I can't get to the driver installer.
should I do an uninstall, reinstall, and try not to be such an idiot next time?

I am having a problem with Ubuntu Netbook Remix. I couldn't stand the new UI with the huge icons taking up my screen, and the maximize/minimize/close buttons displaced, so I enabled the normal Gnome desktop on my netbook. However, with my tiny screen I am seeing that some windows have lost all of the information, and no scrollbar is present.
For instance, when attempting to change account settings in Mozilla Thunderbird, some of the options would extend beyond the bottom of the windows where "cancel" and "ok" are found, but the window ends and no option to scroll down to the missing information exists. A similar problem happens when I try to make adjustments to some items in system administration.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on my Cr48 (google beta laptop), which is downloaded from Google.
After a while of using it (it varies, and has been about 30 minutes recently), the menu bars at the top and bottom of the screen disappear.
Webpages perpetually load... but never do. Browser chats still work with people, I just cant load new web pages.
When I hit the power button and am prompted with three shutdown options, the top and bottom icon are red circles with a white X (like it cant load the icon), and all the text is just boxes like it cant load the symbols.
I have to hard reset the whole computer by pulling the battery.

My gnome menu bars suddenly froze for no reason. On the top, the system menu is open, but I can't click on anything. I tried Alt+F2, but I can't type anything in the popup or even close out of it. The bottom bar is also frozen, so I can't even switch between programs. The only thing that is working is nautilus, which I used to open Chrome. So without being able to run an application and since I don't know how to open a terminal with nautilus.

I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 (gnome flavor ) on my notebook.Everything installed fine except that I'm seeing three problems I'm hoping someone can help me with (or point me in the right direction).
1. When I open any window (gcalc or Firefox for example), the 3 little buttons which are used to maximize, close, etc...) are missing. So basically in order to exit any app, I have to do it through the application rather than clicking the close button. If you go to Themes, you can see what I'm talking about. For example, the theme 'ClearLook' show's the buttons. If I choose this, these buttons are not there.Any ideas why this is happening or how I can fix it?
2. When I open any application, it positions itself in the upper left hand corner of my screen. The menu of the application is tucked under the Gnome menu bar, so basically to use any application requires me to move it first.so I can get to the app menu.
3. When I open any application, I'm unable to position the mouse such that I can resize the window. Its like the mouse cursor can't find the the fine line where it changes so that I can grab the screen to increase or decrease it.

'm running Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04 dual-boot. After installing Ubuntu, I installed CompizConfig. So, here's my problem. I tried to enable the 3d workspace seitcher and when I did the title bars for all the windows disappeared. And I couldn't disable the 3d switcher. Not knowing what else to do, I restarted the computer. Now when I log in, it goes to my wallpaper but nothing works. All can do is shut down/restart by pressing ctrl alt delete. Is there anything I can do other than reinstalling?

I was setting up my Ubuntu 11, installed drivers and stuff.the last thing I installed was Wallpapoz - I was willing to have different backgrounds for different work spaces.I dunno exactly what happened, but when I restarted the computer, all the bars were gone: both the new apple-style dock on the left of the screen and the classic one in the top.I really don't know what to do know.I got into recovery mode, where the top bar is present, and I removed wallpapoz, but nothing has changed when I restart the computer normally.

After starting up today, I noticed that nautilus has suddenly become quite minimalistic (see screenshot). Additionally, each folder opens in a new window (didn't before) and turns gray when it is opened. It looks the same running as root (except not themed, of course).
I've already done
Code:
sudo apt-get remove --purge nautilus
sudo apt-get install nautilus nautilus-share gnome-session
Also, gksu no longer works properly. It always reports incorrect password, even when the password is correct. Luckily, gksudo does work. I don't know if this is related.
