Red Hat / Fedora :: Three Progress Bars At Startup / NDIS Wrapper Install

Jan 7, 2011

I have a couple of questions to ask, first, at F14 startup, it shows three progress bars at the bottom of the screen instead of the default fedora bubble loading indicator. It started after I had installed a driver for my Nvidia GeForce2 Go card. Is there any way I can fix this? and two, can somebody give me specific instructions on how to install ndiswrapper and the driver for my Linksys WPC54g version 1.2.

Debian :: Progress Bars While Putting ISO Image To Thumb-drive?

Jun 29, 2015

I am talking about this :-

Code: Select all[$] sudo cp debian-8.1.0-amd64-netinst.iso /dev/sdb

This is from [URL] ....

I could do two things :-

a. Do a pv and see if that works the same ?
b. Do an alias for pv which is cp

PV seems wrong when trying to copy an .iso image for booting.

Ubuntu :: Startup Screen With The Orange Progress Bar - Hardy Won't Boot

Aug 1, 2010

I've been running Ubuntu for a few years now and this is the first time in a while that I've been really stumped. My power went out earlier today. Of course my Ubuntu box was on, so it had a hard shutdown. When it booted back up upon power coming back on, it went to the normal Ubuntu startup screen with the orange progress bar, but stopped about halfway through. It then goes to a black screen, with a continuous stream of y's scrolling down the left of the screen. Like this:

[Code]....

So, I try selecting other sessions (Ctrl-Alt-F1, F2, etc) and only get anything from F1, where it says "Starting Up... <cr> Loading, please wait..." I then reboot into recovery mode and get the same continuous y's. However, now when I press Ctrl-Alt-Del, I get the Recovery Menu, which lets me into a root shell. Below is my fdisk -l output.

[Code]....

Ubuntu :: No Progress Indication When System Checks Disk(s) On Startup

Jan 21, 2011

Ubuntu 10.10 does not appear to have an indication of progress when the system checks HDs on start up. In previous versions - at least back to 8 - I think there was either a
progress bar or % reading to give an indication of progress of the scan / check .Is it possible to switch this back on in 10.10?Also how do you control the frequency of disk checks on start up?

Ubuntu :: Startup Application Opening Behind Task Bars?

May 11, 2011

im building a small wallboard machine, using ubuntu 10.10 as 11.4 refuses to load correctly on any of my spare machines.but, anyway, thats not the issue, ive installed chromium-browser, and added it to the startup applications with

Code:

chromium-browser -kiosk http://wallboard
where http://wallboard is the wallboard info thats being displayed.

that works, BUT the browser is opening BEHIND the top 'menu' bar, and the bottom 'task' bar, which obviously, is not what i want. how do i set it to either hide these 'bars' or open the browser in front of them like it does if i manually run the command from a terminal?

General :: Theme In Ubuntu Not Applied To Menu Bars At Startup

May 30, 2010

The theme I have chosen in Ubuntu 10.04 (Ambiance with buttons in the upper right-hand corner) is not applied to the menu bars at boot/login. Menu and title bars should be very dark with a white font. When I boot the computer, the application title bar is correctly formatted, but the main menu bar of gnome and the menu bars of all applications are black font on gray background. When I open the theme selection (in German Einstellungen | Erscheinungsbild, in English likely something like Preferences | Appearance).

The correct theme is applied to menu bars without that I have to select the theme again; simply opening the Appearance dialog suffices. First I did not name my modified theme (showed up as first theme in the theme selection dialog, user modified). In trying to solve the above issue I gave the theme a name, but the strange behaviour persists. Where I can make the theme automatically and completely applied at boot.

Fedora Installation :: Resize Of NTFS Partition On Install - No Progress Indicator On The Installer

Apr 13, 2009

I am doing a fresh install of Fedora 10 64bit on my PC. What I have done is, freshly installed Vista Home Premium 64 bit on the entire Hard Drive (680GB), then fired up the live CD and told the installer to resize sda1 (The windows partition) to about a 60:40 ratio. I intend to dual boot the system

Now the thing is, it's been running for half an hour now and there's no progress indicator on the installer so I don't know if its actually doing anything. Well there is a progress indicator but it's nonsensical, it just moves backward and forwards. The HDD indicator LED on my computer is flashing every now and again, but not constantly as I expect it to?

Ubuntu :: Can't Use Desktop Bars On New Install

May 7, 2010

I didn't like the bar on top so I switched it to be on the bottom while the bottom bar was still there. On top of that, I wasn't thinking and dropped the pixel size for the bar from 24 to 23. I guess I assumed that the bars would either combine or one would be replaced; I don't know. But now I can't use anything from either bar, even though it shows some of the information from the first one. When I click it, it doesn't do anything. It's "under" the other bar, so to speak, rendering both of them useless.

Luckily I am dual-booting from Win7, so I can still use my system. I noticed that Ubuntu loads much slower than Win7, which really surprised me. It could be that the drivers need to be installed on Ubuntu, but I can't get to the driver installer.

should I do an uninstall, reinstall, and try not to be such an idiot next time?

Fedora :: Recording Sound Progress

Nov 28, 2009

Well, I've made progress in getting my recording to work.I was running a piece of software called liveice, and this used to work, but now with the current versions of of Fedora I just get noise and other strange problems. I stopped using liveice, and switched to darkice, and now my recordings are working without noise. I hear correct sound and the volume controls are acting sensible.Liveice was broken in a very weird way.The recording meter worked correctly, but the audio it actually recorded was just noise. This program uses OSS, as does darkice. When I record on the SB live, which is dsp2,sometimes I hear sound on it from the other sound card? Is that weird? Why would the input from the sound cards come in mixed like this?I have two sound cards, /dev/dsp and /dev/dsp1. One shows as ICH5/AD1985, and the other is an SB Live 5.1.I currently have Pulseaudio installed and running. I did a yum update just now. This is all with Fedora 12.This system was upgraded from 10 to 11.And then again from 11 to 12.

Fedora :: F14 Boot Screen - Show Progress?

Dec 26, 2010

I just installed the latest updates for Fedora 14, and a restart was necessary so I did. Then, it didn't reboot! It hung when the cursive Fedora "f" was there for about 15 minutes. I had guessed that maybe it was doing an automatic fsck disk check, but I'm not sure.

Anyway, I couldn't change to tty2 etc while this was happening and for all I knew, the system was frozen. Is there a way to see the load progress (the text) while booting?

FYI, after 1 extremely slow but eventually successful boot, everything is back to normal with rapid boot times.

OpenSUSE Install :: Yast Hangs At 99% Downloaded - Aria2c Can't Parse Progress Line [11.3] / Fix It?

Sep 6, 2010

I've just upgraded to 11.3, as a result, the suse-supplied video driver runs very slowly (screen-saver updates about 2 fps, to give you an idea) On 11.2, I had installed nvidia's native driver and things were just fine, so I tried to install the latest nvidia driver again, but I'm getting a hard hang with Yast -- at 99% downloaded, yast stops responding ("abort" doesn't respond, but an external "kill" signal works)

Finally getting the bright idea of checking the y2log file, I see the following code...

these three lines are repeated every second

I'm sure there are some fingers to be pointed [nvidia's ftp server is borked; aria2c is clueless, etc] but that does not help me - what do I need to do to convince this "aria2c" program that the file has, in fact, completely downloaded so that the installation process can continue?

ATI video ?? 128mb
net card (think onboard is dead)
raptor 36 Gb HD
1 Gb ram
sony DVD

Also some other issues: I used the yum update and had to use the yum complete-transaction-function to get it to finish seems all went well after that cant get yum list adobe* to list any thing to install?? And sometimes the computer will start up and after login will go to the nice blue desk top with no icons or bars???

I had a hard time installing this os on my computer as it did not want to use the sata on board. Got a IDE to sata adapter and things went well from there. I also tried to install it on a 4 Gb CF card that was adapted thro the IDE but that was a bust also.

Server :: Relational Interface/wrapper Around SQL Database?

May 19, 2011

I'm not a database guru, so be patient with me: Is there some kind of "wrapper" software you can put around an SQL database (MySQL perhaps) that allows you to internally configure database rules on a higher level than the database itself can actually implement? (E.g., "rows in table A can be deleted, but only if there are no related rows in table B and only if column x for the row in table A is in state y.")The idea would be to keep from having to trust this kind of logic to the client programs, while also avoiding the need to write a full fledged server daemon just for your application. The clients submit their SQL insert requests to the wrapper daemon, and the daemon passes them on to the database if they pass a rules table defined for that particular database.

Programming :: C Wrapper For Secure Password Substitution

Feb 3, 2011

I'm working on a program that will allow non-privileged users the ability to substitute passwords that are read in from a 600-root:root file.
A user might call it like this:
/bin/securepasswrapper "/path/to/check_ping -u Admin -p ?webserver1?"

The file (defined now as /tmp/securefile) will be searched for the identifier "webserver1", and it's corresponding password will be returned to securepasswrapper. Now, I know you could just call /bin/echo, and get the output, but that's in scope at this point.
File format of securefile is:
<identifierassword>
ex: webserver1:asdf123

Once the password is properly substituted in, securepasswrapper should then execute it as the UID/EUID of the calling user (not root)...that part I've not got to yet.
Code:
/* program: securepasswrapper
author: R.Briggs + Google
date: 02/02/11
purpose: C wrapper that replaces placeholders in a string with secure passwords retrieved from a file
*/ .....
