for my small home server i want the machine to NOT start x11 automatically but to enable remote logins via xdmcp.The problem: xdmcp is controlled by gdm. If i disable gdm to have no x11-login-screen xdmcp does not run...Is there any way to start gdm without starting x11 on the console?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently installed ubuntu 10.10 on my Acer Aspire laptop 5745G-7671 laptop. It has an Nvidia Geforce gt 420m dedicated card, and an Intel HD integrated GPU. The problem is, I recenly installed a driver for it (because ubuntu had already found a driver in hardware management). After I did that, everytime I try to start ubuntu, I can no longer see any GUI interface.I have tried everything. I tried restarting X (which doesn't seem to work in Ubuntu 10.10, and tried holding CTRL+ALT+F7 too, but it just displays a few "[ OK ]" messages.

The module (and a few others) appear to be loading for my Audigy2 card. Sound is fine in KDE and all relevant applications. I have no sound outside of X. I've made certain that the volume is up on ALL outputs in "alsamixer" there's got to be something I'm missing. I've just checked....I connected one of the line outs from the sound card to an amplifier and used madplay to play a song in console. It worked fine. The problem seems to be that the sound is not being routed to the video card (via spdif) in console mode. This does work after I've started X as I have sound on all applications when running KDE.
Yesterday i fell asleep while my laptop was still on. when i woke up this morning i stared at a black screen. I tried to wake it up but nothing happened so i just turned it off.
But when i turn it on again i get this after the login screen: Xsession: Warning" Unable to write to /tmp; X session may exist with an error
After a few minutes i get the message, that my temp directory id full.
Now the problem is, that i cannot even login in console mode! i tried the "console login" mode from the login window, i tried switching the console with ctrl+Alt+F1, i even tried to start in recovery mode. But all i get is a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the middle, but i can't write anything!
I removed gdm and kdm and my laptop started in console mode.Now I would like to get same thing - I made upgrade to ubuntu 10.4 and it starts again in graphics mode. I removed from grub menu.lst splash and quit, removed gdm and kdm - and again I receive graphics prompt.PS I removed also failsafe-x.

Load only console, but gnome not load. And besides error message not showing. If i connect such a iso to a VM (using virt-manager) for installing a operating system i get the following error on startup: Error starting domain: internal error Process exited while reading console log output: char device redirected to /dev/pts/1 qemu: could not open disk image /mnt/iso/public/Linux/Distributions/Debian/debian-504-amd64-netinst.iso: Permission denied
The problem is definitly that kvm (or qemu or libvirt-bin, i don't know) tries to set permissions (rwx owner for libvirt-qemu, --- for kvm group, --- for other) on the file, although it has read permissions. Is it possible to change this behavior?
Well my friend just gave me a Cd so i could switch back to windows vista but when i run with starting cd rom and i press any key to start cd or dvd it goes black with a blinking thing on the top left corner i went to sleep for 2 hours hoping it would be done when i get back but it was still there

After some struggles, I found and installed the Ralink_RT3572USB_drv2400 driver for it and it now works, however it won't turn on when I boot up the computer. All failed to start ubuntu gui it takes me to the console login and I noticed it says "saned disabled" edit /etc/..something. This problem made me install ubuntu again three times and every time I activate the driver then install the driver Nvidia.run or through apt-get and both leads to a black screen tty1 login. A new and very exciting error everyone now also the windows 7 that I have besides linux has also crashed and cannot open the login window. I finally got my system to boot to a console prompt. This is a fresh installation of fc10 that I have struggled to get working with my old Adaptec 2940 scsi hardware. The nfs-client service isn't starting after boot up. This is causing problems with the user as they cannot access the remote folders on the server. The PC is a Thinkpad X60s with oS11.3 and KDE4.4.4. The problem started about a week ago after some updates (new kernel update, kde4 updates and some system files) were applied on the laptop.
After logging in none of the remote folders are available. Checking the nfs-client service under Yast>System Services (Runlevel) shows the nfs-client service is not running. If I enable and start the service I get the pop-up confirming the service has started but still cannot access the remote folders even after issuing a mount -a. Opening Dolphin just opens a blank grey window which needs to be terminated.
Trying to restart the nfs service using su -c 'rcnfs restart' sticks at Starting NFS client services: sm-notify Just leaving the PC for 10-15mins eventually sorts itself out and the remote folders become visible. I cannot see anything obvious in the logs so am a bit stumped.
