I have a headless server, and I want to prevent GDM 2.30 from starting the graphical login on the console screen. As I use XDMCP, I still need GDM running on the server... With previous versions of GDM, I was doing that through gdmsetup, which ended with these lines in /etc/custom.conf :

but it seems that it's not working anymore with 2.30...
How can I start a program from tty1 console text mode to be executed in tty2 console text mode? Actualy I would like to start a program (chat client cli program) in tty8 automaticaly when linux PC boots.
View 6 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading Ubuntu to version 11, vmware-server-console stopped working - only gray window opens. After killing the process error message appears:

We are currently troubleshooting the following error, which was repeatedly being displayed on the console:
kernel: Northbridge Error, node 2<0>K8 ECC error."
After replacing all of the memory, the error remained, so we tried updating to the latest kernel. (Currently having to use centos-plus because we are using XFS)
After the kernel update the error disappeared fro 5 days (previously UNHEARD of - would often repeat several times a day), it appeared again and hasn't appeared since.
It does not seem like any real damage is done here - and I would like to suppress this error somehow. Optimally I would like it to only be forwarded to the log files - and NOT be displayed on the console.
Could someone point me to an easy way to set that up?

View 8 Replies View RelatedYesterday i fell asleep while my laptop was still on. when i woke up this morning i stared at a black screen. I tried to wake it up but nothing happened so i just turned it off.
But when i turn it on again i get this after the login screen: Xsession: Warning" Unable to write to /tmp; X session may exist with an error
After a few minutes i get the message, that my temp directory id full.
Now the problem is, that i cannot even login in console mode! i tried the "console login" mode from the login window, i tried switching the console with ctrl+Alt+F1, i even tried to start in recovery mode. But all i get is a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the middle, but i can't write anything!
I removed gdm and kdm and my laptop started in console mode.Now I would like to get same thing - I made upgrade to ubuntu 10.4 and it starts again in graphics mode. I removed from grub menu.lst splash and quit, removed gdm and kdm - and again I receive graphics prompt.PS I removed also failsafe-x.

Load only console, but gnome not load. And besides error message not showing. 'starx' command leads to black screen and nothing happends, keyboard doesn't work too. if I leave 1Gb memory, all working perfectly! tell me where I can find log-message or how I can solve that problem. I could not solve examining the start and stop scripts. When I boot (default runlevel 5) my system all log messages are displayed on /dev/tty1. After the boot process has finished and kdm is started no more console messages are displayed on /dev/tty1. Instead all console output is redirected to /dev/tty7. Suse 11.3 KDE 32bit Following instructions in software.opensuse.org: Search Results I installed LibreOffice using the 1-click Install method. It will not start and produces no error when invoked from the console. Now here's the strangest part. All failed to start ubuntu gui it takes me to the console login and I noticed it says "saned disabled" edit /etc/..something. This problem made me install ubuntu again three times and every time I activate the driver then install the driver Nvidia.run or through apt-get and both leads to a black screen tty1 login. So what to do now I installed and removed many things and I won't reinstall ubuntu again. Also I typed compiz and this came on:

A new and very exciting error everyone now also the windows 7 that I have besides linux has also crashed and cannot open the login window. and of course, I'm disconnected after cd commands. I found no ssh option which prevents this disconnection to occur. I also tried the following trick:

but it left me with a crappy shell (no color, directions keys printing ^]]A, ...)
The title pretty much says it all. Once I get past GRUB, the font becomes HUGE and starts off screen. It appears to be center zoomed because I cannot see the login prompt nor anything I type. It's not really an emergency, I installed OpenSSH during the OS installation and can just turn it on and log in over SSH or start up Webmin. It just bugs me that I cannot figure this out.
There is no graphical environment installed, so it's not a video card issue. I tried adding vga=ask as a kernel flag and then tried several options, but to no avail.
I think this is the right place to ask my question so I'll just go ahead. Where I live we have frequent power anomalies such as outage and why I would describe as power resets resulting in power being cut and restored in a very fast delay, resulting in all electrical equipment in my house to reset and all computers to improperly shutdown and reboot. I don't know how many times my beloved Linux server was reset like this and every time reiser fs has to replay transactions and so far I've been lucky I did not lose any hdd or other components but I think this will happen sooner than later.
What I am searching for is a device that would protect my server, scanner, router and a few other small devices from power surges and anomalies that would result in hardware and equipment damage. What I also want from that device is the capability to continue powering the devices until they properly shutdown. I think a ups is what I am looking for but all models that I've seen are priced $400 up and that's over my budget.
What I also want is the capability to announce to the server that the device is running on batteries and that the server can initiate it's normal shutdown procedure.
