General :: How To Configure Wine To Share Folders With More Than One User
Sep 24, 2010
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 with current updates. I installed MS Office 2007 suite using WINE - the other users are not comfortable with OpenOffice. There are no issues with the installation, but it is in my user home path so it doesn't appear in the WINE config when I log in as another user. Should I start over with a generic user account and re-install Office/ WINE under that user?

I've just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and Samba 3.4. I've shared a folder and have accessed the share from a Windows 7 client. However, I've struggled to configure the share and folder so that the Win7 client can create files and/or folders in the share. Kept getting Permission Denied errors. Finally, (using Webmin) I set the permissions on the file folder so that "Other" had write access. I don't understand why this was necessary (and how unsecure this is). I already had the write access checkbox ticked for "User" but it wasn't enough.

1. I have Ubuntu 10.04.1 installed alongside Windows Home premium 7 on a Compaq CQ5110f with 2 dual processors, 320 GB HDD, 4 gb Ram, less than a year old/ It is giving me some error messages. It is wanting to lock the drive or various programs after being left unused for a few minutes, I have not found where I can disable this. I do not need passwords, really. I am the only user. I reinstalled it once, on top of itself (Ubuntu) and it worked fine briefly, then started doing it all again.
I use to sometimes install Ubuntu as a windows app. on a previous version, maybe 9.04 - 9.10, but think I can not do it on this version?
So, Can I install as WIndows app on this version of Ubuntu? CAn I install Ubuntu on one drive alone, and windows on the other drive alone, install both in same computer and get dual booting? I think before, to do that I had to reset boot drives in BIOS to whichever I had the OS I wanted to use?
Or MUST they be installed on same drive for dual booting to be available?
I am attaching screen shots of the messages I get, etc. I have tried to share files and folders, but it does not allow me to select Share this folder as some security thing is not installed, And the time I am required to enter password to use comp[iter after being idle a few minutes, seems to be tied to my folder, which is JOHN. I may have to think about removing Ubuntu from this drive, add a SATA drive and use two, one for Windows and one for Ubuntu.

I have tried to find a simple "how to". People testify how simple sharing over Linux networks is, but I just can't make it.I have a desktop with Mint LXDB on it. My wife has a laptop with Ubuntu Lucid Lynx connected with a wireless LAN to a D-Link router.
But I can't open mine from her laptop. My aim is to connect her to a backup station connected to my computer. I have been looking into https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpNFSHowTo. It is six pages long, complicated and i can't make it work.If networking in Linux should be so simple and native, there must be a better way..I hope.

I have a computer running Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit with Gnome and another computer running Windows 7 64-bit. How can I share folders between these? I can use Samba to view my Windows shares, if I specify the IP address by going to the "Connect to Server..." option in the Places menu. Going to "Network" in Nautilus and trying to open "Windows Network" fails because it could not retrieve the share list from the server.
MY question, though, is how can I set up Samba (or some other software) such that my Windows box will be able to see my shared folders? And also, what is the difference between Samba and Samba4 (because both are in the repositories).

I want to set up a "global" wine directory, so both me and my girlfriend can play games on each others' accounts. Right now, I have wine set up so it can run in my account, but she has to log out and log into my account each time she wants to play a game which is far from ideal.So, what I did was set up a "global" homeuser group for all user accounts on the system. Then, I moved my ~/.wine folder to /home/wine, and did chown :homeuser /home -R Then I made a symlink to the /home/wine directory at ~/.wine and did the same for my GF's home directory. It works fine in my account, BUT if I change to my GF's account, I try to run wine and it says"/home/xxxx/.wine not owned by you"

equivalent of "force_user" when sharing with nautilus-share? To put this question into context, I have shared out a folder with "Allow others to create ..." and "Guest Access ..." turned on via the GUI (I believe nautilus-share is applicaition behind the GUI). When Guest accounts create files or folders, I want the owner of the files or folders to be a specific user, rather then "nobody". In a Samba Server, I know you can use the parameter "force_user" in the smb.conf (under an individual sharename) which will specify the owner of the files and subfolders created through the share.
I have tried to add this parameter to the files created in /var/lib/samba/usershares but the owner of the files and folders are still "nobody" (NOTE: I rebooted the PC after making the change to the file) I have just done a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop with nothing else installed (except the current Updates and the necessary components needed when sharing folders) As a follow on question, I also want to set the permissions for files and folders. To replicate what the "create_mask", "force_create_mode", "directory_mask" and "force_directory_mode" parameters do within a Samba Server.

I need 2 Linux users to share a folder. Within this folder, users should always be able to create files and sub-folders and write into any sub-folder (whether they own it or not). However, they should only be able to edit the files they actually own.

Prelude: OpenSUSE 11.2 (2.6.31.8-0.1-desktop), installed Novell client 2.0 SP2 (novell-client-2.0-sp2-sle11-i586.iso).
I found that if any usual user is logged into a NDS-tree, then _local_ root has full access to user's network shares, including the user's home directory located on remote Netware-server. Is it by design or
have I missed something? Nevertheless in windows local admin has no access to network resources mounted of any other user. If you runas shell (as admin) then admin in principle can't "see" network shares which were mounted (connected) by other users - they are accessible ("visible") per session.

I'm trying to access a share across the net. the share is a disk "fat32" which I mounted using "vfat users,rw,exec 0 0." However, after I created the samba user "smbpasswd -a user" I'm still unable to access the share across the net. ports are open, and entry has been made in smb.conf for share. But I'm having problems giving permission to smb user. the share it is mounted on /media/share, and I've tried everything from
chmod -R ug+rwx /media/share
chmod -R ugo+rwx /media/share
chown -R user /media/share
and I always get unable to set permission for user

My startup script for Radius now works so it starts at boot time, the script is in /etc/init.d and looks like this
#!/bin/sh
/usr/local/sbin/radiusd -d /usr/local/var/log/radius/radacct/ -d /usr/local/etc/raddb/
After rebooting radius starts up automatically which is what I want.
However for security I dont want this to run under root, but I want to it run under a user and group called support
I have edited the radius.conf file and added
# for some finer-grained access controls.
#
user = support
group = support

Or would this sacrifice security in some way? I've been using root only, and am ready to have a seperate account now. It's the dotfiles for GUI apps that I'm concerned about:
Code:

-rw------- 1 root root 6392 Feb 12 18:13 .bash_history
drwx------ 5 root root 4096 Jan 13 17:47 .config
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 Dec 29 21:36 .fvwm
drwx------ 4 root root 4096 Nov 7 19:55 .mozilla
-rw------- 1 root root 218 Jan 26 10:04 .recently-used.xbel
