Software :: Invoking Wine Application From A Desktop Icon
Nov 24, 2008
I have a windows app I run under wine that always displays a blank dos window first when I run it directly from a link to application on my desktop.I wrote a bash script to run it and put that in a link to application and that works without the blank dos window. Why doesn't the first way work?
Long version:I have a small old windows application that stores all my passwords. I like it because it's simple and I can access it (dual boot) from Windows or Linux. It just displays a very simple window with a list of accounts and clicking on one of those opens a child window with the details. It has no graphics or anything fancy. On the windows side, installing it
was as simple as unzipping it and creating a desktop shortcut for it - no setup at all.
On the Linux side (kubuntu hardy), I created a link to application on my desktop with Command set to
wineconsole /media/windoze/Program Files/Passkeeper/pass32.exe and work path set to/media/windoze/Program Files/Passkeeper
It works fine, but when I start it up, I always get a blank dos window on the screen first and then the application window appears. I have to manually minimize the dos window to get it out of the way. It does nothing useful by itself. But, if I close it, it closes the application with it.I tried to run it as as wine instead of wineconsole, but that does nothing at all - at least on the screen and dmesg.
I'm a beginner to Ubuntu so this is probably an easy question, but: I installed a windows application using Wine and that worked, it launched the application just fine. But now after restarting the computer I can't see how to run that application again. It would be nice to make a desktop icon for it.
when an application is opened or minimized the icon of that particular application is not showing up in the top bar of ubuntu 11.04...how can i see the icons in the top bar?
I have just created an 11.3 64 bit image using susestudio. All seems well but would like to customize the desktop via my script that I have added. My question is how do I remove the home directory and the trash icon from the desktop? Or better said what is the path to removing the symbolic link, I cannot find the symbolic links in the desktop directory. It is empty, I do not see any symbolic links under /home/test/Desktop?
I'm trying to add .desktop file for my application but I'm stuck with very strange problem.I created 48x48 icon for my program called etmmanager.png.I created .desktop file according to specifications:
Code: [Desktop Entry] X-SuSE-translate=true Categories=Application;Utility;X-SuSE-TimeUtility; Comment=ETM Manager for time logging Exec=etmmanager code....
My problem is that icon is not working in menu! I can find my program in Utilities->Time->ETM Manager and this is what I wanted, but there is no icon for the program.
It starts working if I specify absolute path in etmmanager.desktop file like Code: Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/etmmanager.png About my system - Opensuse 11.1 KDE 4.2
I tried xdg-desktop-icon command. It does install a shortcut. The shortcut works when double clicked. But the shortcut is shown as a standard icon, not the icon defined in the .desktop file. Do I miss something?
I'm fairly new to Linux... I deleted the wine Icon from the main menu, because I mistakenly thought it was something left over from my last Wine installation.I installed the latest Wine, because I ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE MS Office 2007 for one of my college classes. Now that the new Wine is installed the icon is still gone... How can I replace this.
I'm having an issue with my AWN dock where I have enabled it to'group similarapplications', i.e multiple windows of the the same applicationIn 9.10, AWN distinguished between different WINE applications and used their native icons. In 10.04 AWN doesn't distinguish, see the pic belowScreenshot-2.jpgs you can see AWN groups my WINE applications under one icon, the spotify icon and you can see the MS Word logo to the right. This is very irritating since I would like to have separate WINE shortcuts on my taskbar! I'm sure this will affect some other users too.Anyone know how to sort this out?N.B I can't use cairodock as I have issues with freezing and icons not appearing, and i feel docky isn't up to speed with the same functionality as the others for the time being.
I'm fed up of the crappy low-res Spotify icon that i have in my systray and taskbar, so I have found a really nice replacement. Unfortunately I can't work out how to change the icon. I can change the icon in the menu by changing the .desktop file, but how do I change the others, the ones which I believe are controlled by wine?I'm running debian with xfce, and I run Spotify through wine.
I'm supposed to be starting an online course through OntarioLearn, and they provide software called "Embanet" which all the assignments are issued and turned in through. Wine won't run the Windows XP version of the software. There's also a Mac version but I'm not sure if it would be easier to get that working. This is the error I get. After which, the application doesn't start (but it runs in the background):
Quote: wine fcc32.exe err:dbghelp_msce_load_debug_directory Got a page fault while loading symbols
I have the application set to run with Windows XP compatibility, but no luck. I think my only option is to install Windows through VirtualBox/Qemu, but as I don't have a Windows install CD for this computer (only a 64bit CD, I need 32) I don't know if it'll be possible. I have a 64bit processor (C2D T7250), but Ubuntu is installed as 32bit. Will VB or Qemu accept my 64bit installation CD?
Could you please help me to get the "Multiple Desktop Windows Icons" back on my KDE desktop panel?I accidentally disabled it by right clicking on bottom left of the panel and now i am not able to restore it back through System Setting > Multiple Desktop
I just installed Fedora 15 with the gnome desktop which looks like the android system for mobile phones, I installed wine which put the icons on my desktop but whenever I install a windows app it doesn't put an icon on my desktop for that particular application. How would I add an icon for those window apps so I can lunch them from the desktop, I don't know if you call that the desktop or just the program luncher either way how do I put an icon there so I can run those windows apps from there?
I installed some programs with wine. Then I uninstalled them all following the commands given in Wine Wiki. I don't see them in the uninstallation GUI but ı couldn't remove one thing: When I right click on an mp3 file and choose "open file with", winamp is still there. How can I remove it from the list?
I am using ubuntu 10.10, I installed wine in this and i tried to install windows application i.e. Total Commander and it's installed too. but I cant able to find where it has got installed. If i go to wine it's shows "wine configure" window. how to find out the installed programs in wine.
I have a multi-platform QT4 application and I'm trying to make it run on Debian 7.x. In this app I'm creating 2 QSystemTrayIcon 's and when I run this application on Debian 7.8 with Gnome 3 disabled both tray icons show up nicely in the notification area in the top-right panel. However when I have Gnome 3 enabled nothing shows up in the top-right panel and the tray icon shows up in the (hidden) bottom panel, but the problem is only the first one of my 2 tray icons shows up - the other one is lost.
I'd like to ask, whether it is by design so, that on Gnome 3+Debian 7.8 there can be only one tray icon per application? Or is it some issue with Qt? I tried also Ubuntu 14.04 with Gnome 3 and there both tray icons showed up nicely in the top-right panel.

I installed 11.4 and it seems to be working fine. To run few windows application I need WINE. I installed WINE using YAST Software Manager. But when I install application in WINE it's not working correctly. The same application is working fine in MINT/WINE.
I have installed ubuntu 9.10 and installed wine, as I want to use VOIP packages like smart VOIP and Media Ring talk etc.. But I am not able to install them on ubuntu..
Wine didn't show in Application menu after installation is completed but it's name was shown as installed package in Application tab already(System > Preference > Main Menu)How to bring it to the list in Application menu?the name of package is wine-1.2_1.1.42
I want to install a 64bit-only application in my wine. But every time i try to load the installer it says that it only works on a 64bit-system.Iv'e tried the 32-version of the app and it works fine.I heard that since version 1.2 wine is able to support 64bits.But how do I force wine to load an app in 64bit-mode? I'm guessing there is an option to the wine command or something. But what is it? can't find anything in the man-page. And a google on the subject only brings up old posts from people who are trying to install wine in 64bit-ubuntu...
I have uninstalled netbeans via the uninstaller script came with tat. Now the listing on applications->programming menu is still there with a new question mark icon, how can I remove this.
I am using Ubuntu 10.10 and having trouble setting a custom icon for an application launcher that I created. I have created and SVG file and placed it in /usr/shared/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/ and when I try to select it as the icon for the application launcher, it just goes back to the gnome-panel-launcher.svg default. If I put the SVG file on my desktop and then select it, all is well. I'm assuming this is some type of permission problem, but I cannot seem to figure it out. I have set the permissions to be identical to the other icons in /usr/shared/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/, but have no luck doing that either.

I found that some application icons in the panel bar (at the bottom) is not shown correctly, which makes it hard to tell which application it is when I iconify that application. For example, the emacs application icon in panel bar used to be like a goat head. But now it looks like a generic icon, which I cannot tell it is an emacs application. I attached a screen shot here to show this issue.
when I call a windows application with wine I cannot type anything when the application asks for it. The typed keys are displayed in the terminal instead. I use a ubuntu-based distro.
