How do I switch in the boot screen for it to boot to Windows if I do not specify otherwise in the 10 seconds it allows? Is it possible to extend this 10 seconds? Also, I have about 10 Ubuntu options on the boot screen I assume from all the updates. How do I delete a couple of these options?
Oh, I am running Ubunti 10.4 with a partitioned drive with Windows 7.

I've seen previous threads about this, but they're rather old and I can't seem to apply their solution to the latest (10.04) stable release of Ubuntu.
What's the "best" way of changing the default option in the bootloader? I'd rather set it to "Windows 7" for the time being as it's what I use at work.

Upgrade install to 11.04 using unity theme. I get random white screens/panels. first time was the whole login screen, second is the body of notepad but terminal works fine. I can enter content and it works, sometimes if I refresh it draws the body correctly, sometimes when I change focus it does not work. That happened with Firefox. I have everything updated and I have not changed anything. No private drivers to install. I'm guessing its just a setting somewhere.

I was wondering how I can make Windows XP the first and default option on my Grub 2. I use Ubuntu 9.10 through a semi-dedicated partition on my second hard drive, if that helps. I use Grub 2 just cause I have a grub.cfg file, and here it is.
Code:
#
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE
#
# It is automatically generated by /usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig using templates

I want to make gnome shell my default window manager. I have it installed, and can get it to run from the terminal with gnome-shell --replace.
the effects aren't permanent though. I tried setting gnome-shell to be a start up application but this hasn't worked. I dont want to remove compiz or metacity before knowing if I can get gnome-shell to run by default somehow.
So, how can I get gnome-shell to be my default windows manager?

I am dual booting Windows and Ubuntu 10.10. I installed StartUp-Manager so that I could easily make Windows my default OS upon Startup.I did a sudo apt-get update / sudo apt-get upgrade and now I have a new kernel. This moved Windows down in the list, so now MemTest86 is the default OS upon Startup.I want to make Windows the default always, not just until the next Kernel upgrade comes through.

My laptop has a small flickering area at the bottom of the screen, about 1 cm high. It's a hardware problem. It's very annoying but I can just put a bit of dark paper over it. I would like to change the ubuntu (10.04) defaults so that the bottom of the screen is never used - I can change some windows, but is there a global way to stop all windows, menus etc from using that lower area

When you install a dual-boot of Ubuntu, one of the frustrating things that you'll immediately notice is that Ubuntu is now set as the default operating system in the Grub loader. There's an easy way to switch back to using Windows as the default.
There are many way to change bootup options
This is one way to change bootup option
First you have to go system --> Administration and see for Startupmanager if it is not their
Now go to Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal and type
sudo apt-get install startupmanager It will ask for your password give it now It will ask Do you want to continue {y/n}? Type "y" and press Enter After installation is over close the terminal.
Now once again you have to go system --> Administration ---> now you will see a new Startupmanager button, just press that startupmanager button it will open a window
Enter your password to perform administrative task "now you have to give your password and press enter
now you will see startUp-Manager window in that you will see Timeout
Timeout in seconds: by default it is 10 second if you want, you have to increase the second 10,20 etc.,
Default operating system: by default it is Ubuntu
if you want to change click the Tab and you will see five options that is
Ubuntu with Linux 2.6.35.22 generic
Ubuntu with Linux 2.6.35.22 generic(Recovery mode)
Memory test (memtest86+)
memory (memtest 86+, serial console 115200)
Microsoft windows xp professional (on/ext/sda1)
and now you go to Microsoft windows xp professional (on/ext/sda1) and click it now it will change Ubuntu to windows just press close tab after closing that window you have to restart your system just wait for 10 second and see now your system will boot windows xp by default

How can I set up my pc where it default boots to my main HDD with Windows 7, and a secondary HDD with ubuntu after pressing F12 or something? I was going to just do a dual boot, but I remembered I had this extra HDD sitting around (which I was 'borrowing' from walmart for something I can't remember and lost the receipt =s) so I figured I'd just install ubuntu to it and dual boot like that.
EDIT: Disregard that. Just installed Ubuntu to my second HDD and it booted to the grub loader, which had the Windows 7 option in it. However, I do have one more question: as I'm still using the Windows 7 RC (which expires pretty soon), will a clean install of Windows 7 overwrite the grub loader seen on startup? If so, how do I go about booting back into the second HDD to reinstall grub?

I have a dual boot PC, installed Win XP first, then Centos 5.5 While installing Centos, I set Centos as default. So at boot up time, it does give a choice of selecting from the two if pressed any key, otherwise boots Centos. Now I wish to set it in such a way that Windows is the default OS to boot.
My grub.conf file:--
# grub.conf generated by anaconda

# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file

I was struggling how to phrase the question (in the subject) so let me clarify... I wish to install Windows 2000 and then do Ubuntu, on the same PC. I never had a dual boot before but I understand that it goes automatically (after a short time) to default Windows if Ubuntu is not chosen (on the boot up screen), correct? If so, if there's a "countdown" of sorts, is there a way to disable it? I wish to have control over that aspect, have unlimited time during that boot "choose one" screen.

I accidentally set the grub startup manager's time to 0 secs and windows xp as the default OS. (I have windows xp and ubuntu on this laptop.)
Now when I turn on or restart my computer, it boots up straight to windows, I can no longer access the grub boot selection screen or my ubuntu OS.
