Jul 9, 2011i installed macbuntu a few months ago which changed the bootup screen and also the login screen. i have tried uninstalling macbuntu but i still have the macbuntu boot screen and login screen. i wish to reset these to the default screens but cant find out how.

May 12, 2011My default desktop environment is Xfce 4.7 (older machine). Monday I came back to work to discover a 17 GB log file in /var/log that ate up my root partition and gave me trouble running. I deleted it, which solved the problem EXCEPT that now when I boot, instead of the Xfce login prompt, I get an X-Windows login prompt. This takes me to a terminal (which apparently reads my .zshrc file), from which I can start an Xfce session by running xfce4-session. How can I get back to booting into the Xfce login screen?

Apr 25, 2010If I re-install Grub 2 from the live CD should that reset all the personalisations such as as splash screen and colours in the Grub splash to default? In my case they are not resetting. I would expect them to revert to the default black/white you get when initially installing the OS. the Grub timeout to be a lot less than its supposed to be? e.g. the default timeout setting of 5 seconds is more like 2 or 3 in reality, and when I set my prefered value to 2 seconds it results in being about 1/4 sec or so.

Aug 6, 2010I have just bought a new Acer 23" 1920x1080 flatscreen. I used to have an old fashioned 1280x1024 flatscreen.Now the problem is, every single time when I log on Ubuntu resets my screen res. to 1280x1024. So every time I have to use the Nvidia Settings to set my screen res to 1920x1080 and every time I have to place my panel widgets back in the right place and order, because of that, which is quite annoying.GDM has no problems though, it always displays in the right resolution.I use a Nvidia GeForce 6200 graphics card and the nvidia-current driver on Ubuntu 10.04 i386. I cannot use the Gnome monitors manager to set my resolution. Every time it sends me to Nvidia Settings.This is my Xorg.conf;

Ubuntu :: Restoring Login Screen To Default?
Jul 26, 2010Recently I tried to change my login screen with plymouth in the terminal, i got to the part that shows all of the different login screens you can have, so I clicked the one I wanted. When I tried to log back in, the theme was basically the same as the default, but it made me click log in, enter my username, click accept again, then enter the password. So I was wondering how I could make it the default login screen where it's all on one screen.

Dec 20, 2010How do you change the default runlevel in Ubuntu 10.10? I need a solution that I can execute by editing text files; right now I'm accessing the Ubuntu filesystem by mounting it to another OS on a different hard drive.
The long and the short of it is that I'm getting a blank screen at login time. I suspect it's a driver issue (I have an Nvidia card) and it shouldn't be hard to fix... but I need a console. And no, I can't get in via Grub... my main OS is Slackware and Lilo is controlling the bootloader. So I need to be able to change the runlevel, and thus far a Google search has proved unenlightening.

In 99% of the cases I use "Peter" and have explicitely to click on Peter. Only then the password entry field appears and I can enter it.
This is somehow user unfriendly. Can I define somehow a default user (here: Peter) and show immediately the password entry field (and place the cursor inside)?

Jun 3, 2011i am having a boot problem with opensuse.i installed a theme named suse-elegant under personal settings(configure desktop)-system administration-login screen.
i had also added vbox users(i ticked vboxusers) under yast-security and users-user and group management-edit-details to make virtual box work.
i want to check that installed theme so i restarted my laptop.after the restart opensuse taking too long time to boot
note:the login theme also not working.
after the boot i restored defaults in login screen themes.it is also not working.
i don't know which cause this problem(vboxusers or login theme).i am also seeing a root user has been added in my login area.i tried opensuse failsafe also.

Oct 1, 2010I am using Ubuntu 10.04.1 and I run it 24 hours a day. Recently one morning I went to my laptop and opened the screen but the login screen wouldn't appear. Anytime the cursor appeared, HDD activity would go to 100%. I'm assuming this because the HDD light on my laptop was permanently on. So I made the dumb decision of just holding the power button down and turning it off. When I turned it back on, I noticed it came to a command prompt type screen listing "initramfs" at the bottom apparently wanting me to input a command. I did a lot of research and couldn't find much of anything that would help me. I read about GRUB, superblocks, fsck, e2fsck, etc.. . I tried all of those and nothing has worked so far. Any ideas? I did notice one thing. When I went into the actual install with the livecd, it told me the drive was /dev/sda5, but in Disk Utility on the livecd, it told me it was /dev/sda1

I'd like to customize the login screen (if I grokked correctly, that's gdm). I already saw how to change the background or how to enable automatic login, but what I'd like to do is this :
1. Disable that rather annoying "pong" sound when I select a user,
2. Set a default desktop environment. Gnome seems to be the default environment selected in the drop-down menu, but me, I'd like for it to be XFCE.

May 3, 2011I recently installed the new 11.04 release and was messing around with the Compiz settings on Ubuntu Classic. I tried logging on to regular Ubuntu and everything crashed. When I start up there is no log in screen, only text shows. (I enter my log in information then type 'startx' in the terminal to show my desktop.)
The desktop shows a messed up version of my custom configuration with Cairo-Dock all weird and everything in the wrong place. Also my custom start-up screen that I installed is distorted, and the GRUB screen shows up in purple.
If there was a way to reset Ubuntu 11.04 to the default settings? I tried typing 'unity --reset' in the terminal but it gets stuck at the line 'Setting Update "fullscreen_visual_bell"'.

Jun 13, 2010When I ran 8.04, force check would be run every 23 boots. The ESCAPE key allowed me to skip it that boot and it would again start force check at the next boot. In 10.04, it gave me an option to use the C key to cancel, but it does not attempt force check at subsequent boots. It does not seem to do an automatic check any more.
How can I restore the original 10.04 setting? Or better yet, get it to perform as it did in 8.04
