Ubuntu :: Get Gnome-shell To Be My Default Windows Manager?
Nov 30, 2010
I want to make gnome shell my default window manager. I have it installed, and can get it to run from the terminal with gnome-shell --replace.
the effects aren't permanent though. I tried setting gnome-shell to be a start up application but this hasn't worked. I dont want to remove compiz or metacity before knowing if I can get gnome-shell to run by default somehow.
So, how can I get gnome-shell to be my default windows manager?

I'm running ubuntu natty with gnome 3 installed. I was installing some gnome 3 shell themes, and I now I want to revert back to the default gnome 3 shell theme (adwaita) but i forgot to back it up (I thought I had) I'm just wondering where I could find this shell online. How do I revert back to where I was.

How can I change the default file manager in GNOME? I've got these notes but neither methods work:
GUI
Change under 'Session control' in 'Ubuntu Tweak'
Delete nautilus and type in pcmanfm or another file manager such as thunar
Apply
Quit ubuntu-tweak
Reboot
TERMINAL:
Code:
gksu gedit /usr/share/applications/nautilus-folder-*handler.desktop
Then replace 'nautilus --no-desktop %U' to whatever you like. Example: pcmanfm %U
Save, logout & login
Update: This works. Why does the Ubuntu Tweak method not work though?
Code:
sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/nautilus-folder-*handler.desktop

how to enable the Gnome Shell with an AMD 6950 graphics card and the default Fedora 15 drivers? I may try the AMD Catalyst proprietary drivers but from history those usually lag behind the Fedora versions. I also read some people had issues with the current AMD Catalyst drivers in the Catalyst guide thread.
Also, the AMD 6950 graphics card fan is at full speed all the time in Fedora 15. I do believe you can with the Catalyst drivers using aticonfig but was wondering about the default Fedora 15 drivers?

I recently decided to install xfce-desktop as a fallback alternative whenever Gnome 3 has problems. Now I have the Thunar file manager opening up by default even when logged into Gnome (for example when using Alt-F2 and typing in a folder name, or when plugging in an iPod.) I've searched around for days but can't find any place to set a default file manager. The Default Applications dialogue doesn't include file manager, only web browser, video etc.)

After trying to backup my hard drive on my HP Mini 210-1054TU notebook PC, On start up the users menu comes up (A little changed) and when I sign in it comes back with a window flag that say: The configuration defaults for GNOME power manager have not been installed correctly.I can booth with a stick and see my files and directory but, I am not allowed to open any. There is no access to a terminal or anything but, the users menu. It appears to take the password as, if not right, it would say so but, only comes back with same menu and window flag.Ironic, I was trying to backup my files so I would not lose them.

I was messing around with different GUI sessions, and I wanted to try XFCE. Well, I switched to XFCE for a session, and I played around in it. When I went back to a Gnome session, however, it appears that Thunar is now the default filesystem explorer.I get the Thunar explorer. I want the Nautilus explorer. How do I fix this issue?

I have an Acer One netbook,I tried the Moblin and Meego distribution and i liked some parts of the user interface very much, especially the fact that every window that you open comes out well maximized and easy to read on the small screen of the netbook .But I didn't like Moblin/MeeGo because they are too "rigid", difficult to customize if you don't like the default choices. I prefer something like Debian much more.I would like to find a nice, light and fast window manager for Debian that would give me some of the advantages of MeeGo/Moblin,especially the fact of maximize by default every windows that I open..

Is it possible to install a different windows manager? Currently I am using an HP Netbook 210. The windows manager I am using is "gnome-shell" that comes as default with Fedora 15. However, I am wondering if I could completely remove this and install a different windows manager, such as Xfce 4.8. I am not talking about completely removing Fedora 15 and then installing Fedora 15 xfce spin. Just the window manager. How easy would it be to remove the gnome-shell windows manager and then install xfce 4.8 windows manager? Any steps to do this?

Is there any way I can switch my desktop shell from unity to, say, gnome-shell? I can switch using other console shell I like (bash, csh, fish, etc.). Assume that there is a stable alternative desktop shell, I should be able to choose, too.
(For console shell, we goes to /etc/passwd. But for desktop, I can't find the way to config.)

I have been trying to lighten the load that Ubuntu uses on my RAM and processor, and decided to try LXDE, as it is the lightest-weight DE that I have tried and liked. I noticed I didn't have any wireless connectivty under LXDE, so I checked the LXDE site for the solution, and it said to download and install LXNM, which supports wireless connections. Unfortunately, installing LXNM (apt-get install lxnm) also uninstalled nework-manager, and network-manager-gnome, on top of lxnm not working properly, and stranding me without any way of reinstalling the OS, and without an internet connection (I can't connect with a wired connection, either). Is there anything I can do, aside from reinstalling?

is there some wiki page on GNOME or Fedora that list which graphics cards work without problems on Fedora 15 with GNOME Shell? I have tried 3 older cards and they all failed, so I would like to share this info with others so people know which cards to avoid if they want to use full features of GNOME 3 via GNOME Shell.

Please excuse my ignorance, but I need to get it straight. I've been reading and trying to find out more about these three new desktop environments, but still am rather confused. I have had Unity on my netbook for a couple of months now and know it inside out (more or less by now). The problem is: what is the main difference between Gnome 3 and Gnome Shell?
To my understanding Gnome 3 will be a continuation of the panelled Gnome we are so used to? But then I read the panels will be gone forever, so I'm confused again Gnome Shell is somewhat similar-looking to Unity, but I haven't had a chance to try it properly yet.

If this file exists it must be readable by you for GNOME to work properly. try logging in with failsafe session and removing the file." What commands do i use for that? or do i need to do something else?

I'm currently building a ubuntu distro and would like to run a script on GNOME startup. I've read about doing it through the session manager but I have to do it through chroot so I'll need to set it up as a terminal command. Is there a way to add an item to the Session Manager from terminal or, even better, a directory where I can put the script so it will run on start?
